65 years ago, on the 13th of August 1961, East Germany closed the border between east and west Berlin and started construction on the Berlin Wall. In the years prior, emigration had become a worry of East German officials, especially young and people leaving and 'brain drain'. #otd #history 🗃️

One to mark the day - the anniversary of Britain's declaration of war against Germany in August 1914 #FWW Years ago I helped write the script for this audiovisual piece at IWM London. It took prob 20 or 30 versions before it both 1) said what it needed to say and 2) could be delivered in < 2 mins.

70 years ago today, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed the consequential Federal Aid Highway Act, which created the 41,000-mile interstate highway system and was justified and promoted partly on the basis that it would enable swift evacuation of US cities in the event of a Soviet nuclear attack.

The exhibition of captured German military hardware in Gorky Park opened #OTD in 1943. This exhibition was periodically updated with new trophies. It continued to operate after the end of the war and only closed on October 1st, 1948. #tanks #history #WW2 #WWII

HMS Ark Royal was the former flagship of the Royal Navy. One of three Invincible class aircraft carriers she was affectionately known as The Mighty Ark. Her keel was laid by Swan Hunter at Wallsend on 7th December 1978 and she was launched on 20th June 1981 and completed in 1985. Major deployments included the Bosnian war (1993) and the invasion of Iraq (2003). More recently, she assisted in the repatriation of air travellers stranded by the 2010 volcanic eruption. In Hertford today to take the offspring to the theatre, and my eye was caught by this memorial to the men of the town who served, and a few who died, in service during the #BoerWar, a conflict that is almost completely forgotten today. #history

A #Roman wooden barrel, once used to bring supplies to the soldiers stationed at Bar Hill fort on the Antonine Wall (Scotland) - hopefully it was a little luxury that made frontier life a bit more bearable! #AncientBlueSky

Royals joined by senior politicians at Cenotaph in London and events are held across UK to pay tribute to war dead Veterans of the second world war were applauded as they arrived at the Remembrance Sunday service at the Cenotaph in Whitehall, before being joined by royals and senior politicians to honour those who have died in conflict.
