Burping the house on a pleasant #Caturday, decided to have a nap about it.
A tabby cat with orange stripes and white chest, belly, and paws slumps against a bed pillow near an open window. His front legs are arranged comfortably, one curled and resting atop the other, lying straight on the bed. A back leg juts out, rabbit style, exposing perfectly nibble-worthy toe beans. This is the Way.

Well, this oughta be different. #Arirang #BTSChicago #SoldierField
An "Army Bomb," a spherical light stick souvenir for fans of the music group BTS. The light is remotely synced to pulse with different colors during the concert. Behind the light stick is the inside of Soldier Field, a professional American football stadium, fitted with a sprawling stage, enormous digital screens, and a giant truss to support the sound and lighting system. The venue is filling up. The ARMY (fandom) invasion is here.

"Do you feel worthy of desiring...?" stopped me dead in my tracks, thanks.
Penélope Cruz as Piña in the 2026 comedy-drama film The Invite. She's a Spanish woman with shoulder-length hair dyed blond, wearing a long-sleeve black button-down shirt over a small camisole. The shirt is unbuttoned to Piña's cleavage and a pair of sunglasses hangs from her undershirt. She's sitting on a couch in an artfully decorated living room, resting her right elbow on her right knee and propping her head on her right hand, fingers loosely curled. Her left elbow rests on her left knee, arm across her legs, with her left hand cupping her right elbow. She looks both utterly at ease and completely engaged in the conversation happening around her. Piña is looking up and to the side at someone out of frame, her lips parted in a playful, inquisitive smile. This is the confident feeling she has before she – or any of the other characters, honestly – fully understand the situation.

The Priceline Negotiator will return in Avengers: Doomsday.
Actor Randall Park, a southeast Asian man with a dyed black pompadour hairstyle, appears in an ad for Priceline. Standing against a dark blue background, he is wearing a basic business suit (gray jacket, black tie, white button-down shirt) and holding a mobile phone with its screen facing the camera. It shows an in-app promotion from Priceline for "up to 60% off hotels." Park offers the camera a friendly and charismatic smirk. The words "Priceline Negotiator" appear at bottom. One hopes this is not the final fate of his character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

A little cat tax for barging into your DMs earlier – our grand dame and chaos boi.
Close-ip picture of and orange and white tabby cat with a pronounced stripe running along the side of his head to the corner of his eye. His eyes are mostly closed, but don't put in the newspaper that he was sleepy. In the background, a black cat lounges on a pillow, also drifting toward slumber. A lamp and a humidifier reservoir are visible on a nightstand at the very back. Everyone, including the photographer, was sound asleep not 30 seconds after the picture was taken.

However, IUPAT Glaziers Local 1778 went on strike earlier this year and ratified a new contract last month. #1U
A social media post from the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades that reads, "After 40 days on an Unfair Labor Practice strike, members of Glaziers Local 1778 have ratified a new collective bargaining agreement with Spring Glass & Mirror, saving their pension and winning better hours and pay! Thank you to our glazier members who spent 6 weeks on the picket line, and to District Council 10 and the rest of the labor movement for their support. Your bravery has raised standards for workers in our trades all across North America. When we fight, we win!"

An orange and white tabby cat lying on a fuzzy tan blanket. His back legs are stretched out mostly perpendicular to his body, with his tail laid between them. His front legs are folded casually against his midsection. Sleep has completely overtaken him in the calm, natural light. Beside him is a red and black plaid blanket and a blue-gray knee pillow. In the background sits a large dresser, its wood stained dark. Despite his constant low-level anxiety, in this moment he is the picture of contentment and comfort.

Some years ago: we didn't actually meet Craig Ferguson, but attended a taping of The Late Late Show and like, goddamn. But just last month, this little devil.
Scottish actor Alan Cumming, a white man with parted salt-and-pepper gray hair, sits on a theater stage in front of a projector screen during a power outage. The stage is lit by emergency lights. He sits with legs crossed and arms folded across his lap. In one hand he holds a flashlight. He's wearing black shoes, pink denim pants, and a black and red Club Cumming t-shirt (a nightclub he co-owns). He is looking off camera, listening to an audience question with an impish and attentive smile.

For @gailsimone.bsky.social, @chanda.blacksky.app, and other boosters: I commissioned this sketch from Bob Hall over the weekend. #Supergirl #ComicSky
A monochrome sketch of Supergirl drawn by veteran illustrator Bob Hall (who has done work for Marvel, DC, and Valiant comics). Supergirl seems ready for action here, looking directly toward the viewer with a lively expression. Her hair flows down past her shoulders and she appears to be running or preparing to take flight, leading with her left arm and fist extended. She's wearing her traditional superhero costume emblazoned with the classic "S" family crest, and her skirt is accented with a metallic belt. The artwork was commissioned on June 27, 2026 in Lincoln, Nebraska. Supergirl is the Woman of Tomorrow whom we desperately need today.

Screenshot from the Letterboxd mobile app showing images of four movie posters arranged in a horizontal line. Starting from the left, the movies are: Amoeba (poster image is four teenage girls in Singapore wearing white school uniforms); Rebels of the Neon God (poster is decorated with semi-transparent bands of rainbow colors, through which can be two young Taiwanese men on mopeds cruising the busy streets of Taipei); The Mandalorian and Grogu (poster image depicts a steel-helmeted space-operatic warrior and his protege, a small green alien with long, pointed, horizontal ears, wide dark eyes, wearing a vaguely monastic brown robe); and Kajillionaire (poster image shows a woman in her late 20s with long dirty-blond hair, almost down to her waist, wearing unremarkable clothing and standing against a plain white wall with two blue accent stripes).

Quote with a fictional band that isn't Spinal Tap.
Bill the Cat (from the 1980s comic strip Bloom County), a scraggly anthropomorphized orange cat in a flamboyant hair metal-style lime green wig, stands onstage wearing stars-and-stripes American flag stretch pants, a studded leather collar, a studded leather wristband on one arm and a white glove on the opposite hand. He has a little studded leather band around the tip of his tail and sports a pair of ankle boots decorated with eighth notes. In one hand he holds a mic stand upside down. With his other hand, he's holding out his tongue as though it were the pull-string on a talking doll. A single drop of slobber falls from the tip of his tongue. Footlights illuminate the scene and a monitor speaker is visible at bottom in silhouette. The drawing is a book cover with the title BILLY AND THE BOINGERS (in white lettering) BOOTLEG (in red). In the bottom right corner is a bright yellow sticker that reads: "Includes the Hits 'I'm a Boinger' and 'U Stink But I Love U' Plus Many Interesting Bloom County Cartoons." (The book actually came with a flimsy vinyl single containing both songs!)

Our library commission loves @scalzi.com! #BookFaceFriday
Screenshot of a Facebook post by the Nebraska Library Commission that reads: "It's a combination Friday Reads and Book Face Friday! How can you be a successful villain, with no experience and no one to train you? You just have to depend on your talking spy cats and unionized dolphins to help you learn the ropes. And trust that they aren't planning to stab you in the back. It's all in a day's work for a 'Starter Villain'. Read more about John Scalzi's escapist fiction on the Nebraska Library Commission blog." (A link to the blog will be in the post following this one.) A blurb from Publishers Weekly says, "In this clever, fast-paced thriller, Hugo Award winner subverts classic supervillain tropes with equal measures of tongue-in-cheek humor and common sense... The result is a breezy and highly entertaining genre send-up." The photo in the post is of a black cat sitting upright on a small cardboard box. A person is holding a copy of "Starter Villain" by John Scalzi in front of the cat. The book's cover image is of a classic brown tabby cat wearing a formal black business jacket, white shirt with starched collar, and a black tie. Because the book cover overlaps the real cat in the photo, it looks as though the body of the real cat is the rest of the business suit worn by the cat on the book cover (hence "Book Face Friday," which usually involves a book and a person, but this is much cuter.)

Sidewalk chalk art, drawn all in pink, of a tall, boxy robot working with an abstract widget. The robot has a square head with googly-style eyes, a long rectangular body, two short arms (also rectangles), two skinny rectangular legs, and bulky feet. Its mouth is open in an O shape and the torso is adorned with dots. Next to the robot stands a contraption composed of stacked squares and vaguely parallelograms, topped with two rectangles arranged in a T shape. The device appears to crackle with electricity; sparks are drawn in the air around it. Above the robot's head is a comic book-style speech balloon exclaiming, "Ooo!" Let's all do a science!

An orange tabby cat with white belly, neck, and snout reclines on a tan blanket at the edge of a bed, facing the camera. Behind him is a dark-stained wood dresser. He is on his side, with his head and shoulders tucked in somewhat; his front legs are stretched along his midsection such that front and back paws are touching. His striped orange tail rests against his back legs. Half-opened eyes let us know that he's drifting off to sleep, if only Dad would put away the camera and lie down.

The Demon Bear and it's not even close.
The cover of issue #19 of the first volume of the comic series The New Mutants, with artwork depicting a titanic, savage brown bear standing upright and baring claws as long as a human is tall. The New Mutants, a teenage superhero team, are engaged in mortal combat with the bear, who clutches the mutant Sunspot in one paw while other members try to coordinate a counterattack. They are defending a teammate who suffered life-threatening injuries during a previous fight in which she confronted the bear alone. The situation is grim and getting worse.

Sometimes he fights to stay awake. I try to tell him it's ok, we're all safe in bed and he can clock out for the night. Eventually he does.
An orange and white tabby cat draped across a brown and tan blanket on a dark blue bedsheet. The cat is on his side but sort of propped up on the blanket, which has been rolled into a more or less donut shape. He looks absolutely exhausted and also as though he is fighting to stay awake, but at what cost? His front legs are stretched straight out, over the edge of the blanket, and the toes of one foot are slightly splayed out, claws visible. He's like this most nights. In the background is a dark wooden dresser.

A promotional photo for the 2026 Paramount+ original series Star Trek: Starfleet Academy. I'm wearing a holiday sweater that features Derpy, a cartoonish giant blue tiger (drawn from Southeast Asian lore) with orange and yellow eyes, as seen in the 2025 animated film KPop Demon Hunters. Derpy takes up most of the front of the sweater; he is playing with a waste basket (his favorite toy), wrapped in a bow and tipped on its side. Screen grab of a newspaper article passage that reads, "During last year's Christmas tree lighting in the Rotunda of the state Capitol, a tradition more than seven decades old, pro-Palestinian protesters interrupted Gov. Jim Pillen's speech. They shouted phrases such as 'Mary was Palestinian,' 'stop genocide' and 'free Palestine.' This year, however, protesters will have a harder time interrupting the ceremony after the governor decided to make the annual event private and ticketed. The move has sparked ire among some
attendees online and state lawmakers who say the Capitol, often referred to as 'the people's house,' is for the public."

Upstate side quest from two weeks ago – I brought flowers, agate, and a soapstone cat. Nothing in particular, just thinking about it today while drifting through this seasonal pivot. Winter I can handle. The last weeks of fall... well, they pass, and that's usually enough. It's fine. It'll be fine.
