Torrential rains in the Omaha metro overnight. Most vegetable gardens are finished for the season. However, if your garden came into contact with flash flood waters it is best to discard those plants. #NebExt #NEWX

They go by many names, but surprise lilies (Lycoris squamigera) are one of my favorite late summer bulbs. These are a little early due to their location but they represent that summer is starting to come to a close. #NebExt

It was a hot one yesterday but that didn't keep Nebraska Extension Master Gardener Volunteers from harvesting over 170 pounds of produce that was donated to the Heartland Hope Mission. #NebExt

Stay weather aware! #NebExt
NOAA infographic about excessive heat, shown over a red-orange city skyline at sunset with dark buildings, glowing windows, and a large “Heat Warning” sign. The left side is titled, “Why is Excessive Heat so Dangerous?” It explains that heat becomes especially dangerous when it lingers for more than one day. Hot days and warm nights do not give our bodies time to cool down. Urban heat islands can intensify extremely hot weather, which can cause breathing problems, heat cramps, heat stroke, illness, or even death.

The right side is titled, “What can You do?” Dotted lines point from a person in a building window to several safety tips. The infographic recommends checking on friends, family, and neighbors during heat waves; wearing light, loose-fitting clothing; and drinking water often instead of waiting until you feel thirsty. It also recommends avoiding unnecessary hard work or outdoor activities, especially if you are outside or in a building without air conditioning. The final tip says to stay in an air-conditioned area and notes that air conditioning is the strongest protective factor against heat-related illness.

With wet heavy snow predicted overnight for the Omaha area, there is no shame covering plants you wish to protect. Heavy snow can bend newly emerging shoots. Use strong sturdy containers that will not collapse under weight. #NebExt

Wild weather: 5 yrs ago we were below 0°F; now near record highs. Still—don’t clean up yet. Overwintering insects are tucked in. But much of the state is in drought: water! Prioritize 2025 plantings, then trees & shrubs. Unhook hose. #NebExt #NEWX

If your locust tree is starting to look like it’s wrapped in silk, mimosa webworms are back. These tiny caterpillars web up the tips of branches and snack as a group. Blast 'em with a strong spray of water or chat with an arborist if it’s getting out of hand. #NebExt
