Wait, what? YouTube removed the "sort by: most recent" feature? That was the best way to find just random videos with like 2 views on various topics. It was great for finding stuff outside the mainstream, just seeing everything weird and messy that people were doing with no monetary incentive […]

@glyph Well, I think (though, because I found the paper hard to understand I could be wrong, LLM text is really hard to read) they are basically saying that a malicious LLM could hijack approvals to do some other operation than that which was approved. They're not saying that they do do this […]

@glyph I suspect the reason for this is that benchmarks and reinforcement learning pipelines have a tendency to have tests like "does this answer contain this information", so a strategy of "stuff as much information into the answer as possible without regard for coherence" is something the LLMs […]

@glyph I was trying to actually understand what these vulnerabilities consist of, but my brain just bounces off of LLM written text, LLMs just stuff a whole bunch of irrelevant details in without actually doing a good job of explaining what's going on.

@glyph Text in that paper was starting to read fairly LLM generated, and indeed at least they admit it: "To help manage and cross-check the repository-scale evidence corpus, OpenAI Codex assisted with repository inspection, orchestration and checking of experiment scripts, evidence normalization […]

@whitequark Huh, interesting. I wonder why this approach, of buying and reselling the drugs, rather than just offering a testing service? When my father was in college (a very progressive college), he said their chemistry department had an anonymous substance testing program. You would submit […]

[food, non-vegetarian] My partner doesn't eat chicken, but has had a craving for Buffalo wings and we picked up a really tasty Buffalo sauce at the Tunbridge World's Fair. So we stopped by our local butcher and fish market to see if there was any fish that might fry up well for buffalo sauce […]

And back to full pressure. Still waiting on hearing about boil water notice, but operating under that assumption until they notify us.

Have partial water pressure back. Not yet back to full pressure. At least it'll be good for washing hands and flushing toilets.

Another day, another water main break. No water pressure, so I'm sure we'll have a boil water notice in effect for a few days. This city really needs to do a major revamp of water main infrastructure; we run higher pressure than usual in order to carry water down through the valley and up into […]

@whitequark I have a friend who has a severe phobia of these specifically (well, any "daddy long legs" type of spider, including these). So while I would otherwise leave them alone to do their thing, I don't mind them, we have to kill all of the ones that we see to keep our house safe for our […]

Wait. I think I've been confusing Dana White and Joe Rogan for a while. I seriously can't tell them apart even when side to side. I think they may have taken enough gender affirming hormones that they've actually morphed into the same physical form by now.

Can't wait until the legal system starts applying the attractive nuisance doctrine to GenAI. But don't limit it to just children. There are millions of adults using it who do not have the means to evaluate whether their use of it is helpful or harmful.

At a bar with sports on the TVs, and half of the ads are AI ads for gambling apps. It's pretty disgusting. I can't believe how normalized they're trying to make casual gambling.

If you see ads pointing you to votesafe.org to check your voter registration, read this first. VoteSafe is run by America PAC, Elon Musk's super PAC. It is not a government site. Its own footer says "Paid for by America PAC." It also doesn't register anyone. The flow ends by telling you to […]

@SnoopJ I've never used their (relatively new) VPS offerings, but I've been with DreamHost for basic traditional web hosting/email/etc for a while and been pretty happy with them. Generally fairly boring web host that has just worked for a while. Not perfect by any means, but boring enough to […]

@glyph Pi does have the disadvantage that it has no built-in sandboxing or confirmation, you must run it in a container/VM/etc, or write or find a sandboxing plugin. But because I don't trust the sandboxing/confirmaiton built into harnesses, that's what I'd be doing anyhow, so that works for me […]

@glyph I mean, most tools probably just use getaddrinfo or gethostbyname and then just try the addresses one at a time. And that's if you're lucky. Many probably just try the first in the list and don't even bother continuing. There's a disturbing number of results in this search that just take […]

@timbray Unfortunately, I doubt it. While the bubble is still likely to pop, there's still a fairly big market; there are a lot of people writing AI assisted code right now who are going to be unwilling to go back to doing it by hand. Some of them never learned to write code by hand. After the […]

@ives @Migueldeicaza Yep, that's right. In the US we generally refer to fractional cents as a fraction rather than as a decimal. It's not really used much any more outside of gasoline, but in the past there have been banknotes for one bit, which is half of a quarter, or 12½¢ […]

@ives @Migueldeicaza This is $4.29 and 9/10s of a cent per gallon. This works out to about €1/liter for comparison to European prices.

@Migueldeicaza For the non-Americans (or at least, the ones who are most likely on here, like Europeans), those prices are still absurdly low. In Europe the prices are closer to $8/gallon.
