Oh what tease this northern sky can be! One moment you see light and while admiring it, it fades away. But just in time and for 2 glorious minutes the full beam came through. Sunrise at the Grianan, Inishowen, Co Donegal

Wade Davis once said, I think it was in ´The Wayfinders,´ at Tedx Talks, about dead reckoning; "You only know where you are at any point in time by remembering precisely how you got there".

Lunar eclipse, Grianan of Aileach, Inishowen, Co Donegal
A wind still night clung on for a little bit longer in the rising mist before gently shredding its shades of darkness. A thinner growing crescent of the moon faded in and out of an ebbing sky and excited voices could be heard from the Grianan as I approached – a couple of stargazers had already taken up position. A young mother with her daughter arrived, before breakfast and school uniform, to show her her first lunar eclipse from the spot made for it. Two more joined, cherishing the moon, this morning and the magic of the moment before mist engulfed it all, wrapping itself around monument and hill like cloak of time and space.

I often thought of it as a sort of signpost leading the way to what was the ancient kingdom of Aileach and can imagine it well as an óenach or assembly.

The surrounding landscape consists of hills forming a calendar using the point of sunrise and sunset establishing the time of year. One group of hills to the west is called the Seven Sisters and interestingly the Pleiades can still be observed setting in the vicinity of those hills.

The monument is aligned to the equinox sunrise and I have the moon observed doing the same some years ago at the minor lunar standstill. But it is possible that the moon shines a beam of light through the inside in between as well.

The monument itself is placed at the beginning of the slope which strongly suggest it never was mend as a defensive structure but most likely to accommodate one or more alignments.

Elizabeth FitzPatrick in her book Royal Inauguration In Gaelic Ireland 1100-1600 has the Grianan down as an inauguration site, which I always thought was a possibility.

The wayfarer Perceiving the pathway to truth Was struck with astonishment. It was thickly grown with weeds. "Ha," he said, "I see that none has passed here In a long time." Later he saw that each weed Was a singular knife. "Well," he mumbled at last, "Doubtless there are other roads."

Truly sorry for your loss and the slow and painful fading of your wonderful mum. I very much support ones choice to leave this life on ones own terms when terminal ill. The inevitable will happen, without this choice only later and with much more suffering.

The seven small cups look like a twin of the Seven Sisters depicted on the Nebra Sky Disc (1800–1600 BC) which raises the question, which one came first.

As I made my way to the Grianan today, seeing her nicely nestled on her hill, I was reminded of a little poem I enjoyed a long time ago. It was written by Claes Anderson and is called Etüde für Sommerwind - Etude for Summer Wind.
