The effort to restore fusion voting in Kansas is headed to the state Supreme Court, marking its final opportunity to secure full consideration of its legal arguments. The case could significantly affect ballot access, party competition, and voter choice in the state. @unitedkansas.bsky.social

Whether it's fusion voting in local races, fair redistricting, or proportional representation, lasting reform requires political support. Building a movement around these ideas is essential—because meaningful change happens when people have the power to make it a reality. @unitedkansas.bsky.social

Fusion is an important piece of the strategy because without it, voters balk at the risk of spoiling or wasting their votes. That has helped push @unitedkansas.bsky.social toward the more basic work of organizing: creating local chapters, recruiting candidates and developing a presence in the state.

He has also watched the changes in Kansas politics up close. Morgan remembers a Republican Party in which moderates and conservatives fought hard with each other, but still operated within the same broad coalition. What he sees now is something different. @unitedkansas.bsky.social

Fusion lets minor parties fight for the issues they care about without being labeled “spoilers” or forcing voters to choose between their values and their vote. When laws invalidate fusion nominations, they limit the freedom of candidates, parties, and voters to associate. @unitedkansas.bsky.social

Fusion voting used to be legal in every state. Our two-party system isn’t inevitable; it’s a product of the rules. Fusion breaks the “wasted vote” trap—and with ~75% of Americans wanting more than two choices, that matters. @thebulwark.com @johnavlon.bsky.social @danielcantor.bsky.social

Parties are powerful tools for organizing and expressing self-government—but today’s rules force them into narrow competition. Fusion voting offers a distinctly American solution to break that mold and let parties better reflect what voters actually want. @unitedkansas.bsky.social

Kansas’s ban on fusion voting strips voters of a key way to exercise their rights—combining with others to support candidates under shared values. Just because it’s been law for over a century doesn’t mean it isn’t unconstitutional. @unitedkansas.bsky.social @nateela.bsky.social

Fusion voting peaked in Kansas in the 1890s, when Populists and Democrats united to sweep the state—winning the executive branch, electoral votes, courts, and seats in Congress. A rare moment where a minor party coalition reshaped power. @unitedkansas.bsky.social @nateela.bsky.social

Kansas has a long history with fusion voting. In 1864, nearly 80% of voters backed the Lincoln–Johnson “National Union” fusion ticket, and for decades parties teamed up to win elections. Coalition politics—not rigid parties—was once the norm in Kansas. @unitedkansas.bsky.social @nateela.bsky.social

The Kansas Court of Appeals just heard arguments on whether the state’s 100+ year ban on fusion voting should stand. Judges pressed both sides on free speech, party rights, and the state’s interest in limiting ballot labels. A major test for voter choice—likely headed to the Kansas Supreme Court.
