Who knows if we’ll ever see him in the Black & Yellow again, but I did ask him if he could ever envision a return to New Mexico United. While he doesn’t know yet what the future holds, he did say a return to his boyhood club would be “a dream come true”. Best of luck wherever the future takes you!

🧵 1/2 I interviewed forward Alex Waggoner (#72) this morning. He’s the 63rd player that I’ve had the privilege to talk to thus far for the book. The former USL Academy playoff Golden Boot winner is currently playing for collegiate powerhouse University of Portland.

He wore the outlandish #86 with Toronto FC II. As cool as that would be, it seems extremely unlikely to happen here at this point. He looks set to be the fourth player in #14 behind Chris Wehan (2019-2021, 2023) Ilija Ilić (2021-2022) and Carlos Moguel Jr. (2025).

Huge thank you to Cody Mizell (#1 and #24) for taking time to answer questions for the forthcoming United by the Numbers book. Cody is the 55th (!!) first team player that I’ve been fortunate enough to interview for this work. I can’t thank Cody and the others enough for their generosity of time.

1/3 🧵UNI NUMBER REVEAL THREAD!🧵 The first presser of the year is complete and all of the mysteries of the uni-(number)verse have been revealed!Amazingly, the club, as of now, does not have a keeper who will be wearing the #1 shirt! Here are uni number confirmations from the players themselves:

New Mexico United have announced the signing of Jake LaCava and shared a post with him in the #17! This would indicate that Greg Hurst is about to become the 10th member of the Two-Timers Club, a select group of players who have worn two numbers for United. Our bet is on the #9.

New Mexico United have signed goalkeeper Raiko Arozarena, another former LV Lights player joining Dennis Sanchez in New Mexico. Arozarena joins Kris Shakes in the local goalkeepers union. Shakes seems likely to pounce on the available #1 shirt while I’m hoping Raiko wears his signature #56.

3/3 Lastly, it looks like fellow new arrival Maliek Howell will be wearing the #27. He would be the fifth #27 in club history, following Romeo Parkes (2020), Philipp Beigl (2021), Avionne Flanagan (2024) and Tomas Pondeca (2025).

2/3 Preceding Reid-Stephen in the #7 are Ryan Williams (2019-2020), Chelo Martínez (2021) and Neco Brett (2023). If Rivas is, in fact, departing, this is a huge development for the club and for the hometown, fan-favorite. I have a feeling there will be more to say on this very soon. 🥹

🧵 1/3 Looks like some big reveals in the latest set of pics from United’s IG today! First, it looks like Niall Reid-Stephen has chosen the #7. If this is true, then that likely spells the end of the Sergio Rivas era (barring the unlikely scenario where he re-signs and wears a new, third number).

2/2 United tantalizingly posted a pic of Howell in a UNM kit adorned with the #22, leading many (me) to speculate that he could be a potential successor to Kalen Ryden in the #22. Juicy, right? Juicy.

@newmexicoutd.bsky.social has re-signed Gedion Zelalem (#6). The anchor at the base of United’s midfield, Zelalem got better and better as the season progressed. He’ll look to extend his record for most appearances in all competitions(29) by a #6 for the club. Welcome back, Gedi!

Got a message today from Seattle Sounder & former New Mexico United loanee, Andrew Thomas (#26). Interestingly, he prefers #13 like Kris Shakes. But when he originally signed for Seattle, #13 wasn’t available so he just doubled it to #26, which he also wore here. Love these stories. 📸: Sounders FC

2/2 I’m not looking forward to season’s end, when I have to update the website to reflect the end of his tenure as “2025” rather than the dreamier, more open-ended “present”. Thank you for everything, Kalen, and congrats on your retirement. 🫡

I’m very fortunate to have interviewed Valentin Noël (#21) for the book today. Lovely guy who chose his number to reflect a meaningful date. He also spoke about the importance of playing collegiately so he could continue to pursue his education. There really is a story behind every number.

Sergio Rivas (#7 and #11) hit 10,000 career minutes last night. By all accounts, he was pretty close to not even being here this year. I’m really grateful that he and the club were able to come together on a contract so he could hit this milestone in black and yellow.

Sadly, @unitedfrontpod.bsky.social has confirmed that Fernando (#9) has been sold to a club in Vietnam, bringing a close to his time with @newmexicoutd.bsky.social. It now seems pretty likely we will see the 100th New Mexico United first team player very shortly after the 100th ever home match.

Just completed my 40th(!!) player interview for the book. Sometimes I get down on myself because I’m still working on this thing, but this is a reminder that this book will be so much more than just *my* words on a page. Their perspective and their own words adds so much. I can’t wait to share.
