UNISON is clear that governments & big businesses are the ones responsible for fixing climate change but we can all help them along the way. Here are some ideas of individual & communal actions you can take, most of these ideas came from our own members so take a look and see what inspires you!
Turn lights, monitors, and devices off when not in use (“Switch Off Hour”).
Encourage no-screen / fresh air breaks.
Explore ways to make celebrations low-waste (e.g. reusable decorations instead of balloons).
Volunteer to set up a workplace book exchange point.

Our member, Patrick Yu has spoken in support of the Supporting Migrant Workers Delivering Social Care in the Third Sector motion at the Community Conference. Full text below
“I rise to support this motion on migrant workers delivering social care in the third sector.

Because behind all the policy language and visa rules are real people. People who are caring for our elderly, supporting disabled people, holding together services that would otherwise collapse. And too often they are doing that work while facing discrimination, insecurity and exploitation tied directly to their immigration status.

Many migrant workers in social care are trapped in a system that makes them vulnerable by design. Different visa routes create different risks, different costs, different fears. Changes to the skilled worker visa and rising salary thresholds have left many unsure if they can even remain in the country. Others on family visas are struggling under the weight of Home Office fees and the Immigration Health Surcharge.”“They pay taxes like everyone else, yet they are charged again just to access the NHS they already help to sustain. A double contribution, without double protection.

And then there is No Recourse to Public Funds. When crisis hits, when work dries up, when a contract ends, many migrant workers have no safety net at all. Nothing to fall back on.

Now the proposal to extend the qualifying period for indefinite leave to remain from five years to ten years will double those costs and prolong uncertainty for a whole decade of someone’s life.
Conference, this is not just unfair. It is unsustainable.”“In social care, sponsorship ties workers to employers in ways that can be deeply exploitative. Care companies collapse. Contracts are lost. Work disappears overnight. For many workers that means hardship. For migrant workers it can mean losing the right to stay in the country altogether.

Imagine being afraid to raise a grievance about unpaid wages or unsafe conditions because the person you are complaining about controls your visa. Imagine knowing that speaking up could mean deportation.

For LGBT+ migrant workers the risks can be even greater. Some face the possibility of being forced back to countries where their identity puts them in danger. Many simply do not know their rights here, or who to trust.”“This is why trade union organisation matters so much.
Conference should be proud of the work already happening. Community branches recruiting migrant workers. Members stepping forward as reps and leaders. Migrant workers shaping bargaining agendas and campaigns. This is solidarity in action, not charity. Not speaking for people, but organising with them.

When migrant workers lead, our union is stronger. Our campaigns are sharper. Our understanding of exploitation is deeper.
But we cannot stop there.

We must challenge the sponsorship model that allows exploitation to flourish. A sector-wide visa scheme would remove the power imbalance that keeps workers silent.”
