It’s hard to believe these were once corn and soybean fields. 🌱 The transformation goes far beyond what we can see. Restored stream channels and floodplains are helping reduce erosion and runoff, slow high water, and keep wetlands hydrated, all while creating healthier habitat.

Where does your dollar actually go? Here's the honest answer. 🌿 It funds the work that outlasts the headline: monitoring properties year after year, upholding every easement term, and defending protected land if it's ever challenged.

A new conservation project is taking shape in Randolph County. 🌿 Our upcoming 24-acre “Blue Sky” Conservation Easement will protect 7,147 linear feet of restored stream and 4.48 acres of functional wetlands.

From the Field Friday 🌿 Heading up into the Blue Ridge Mountains, NC, to Dugger Creek where wetlands, streams, and protected-species habitat come together at watershed scale. What stands out in the field here is the connection: the water that starts in these mountains doesn't stay in them.

"So do I have to give up my land?" 🌿 It's the first question almost every landowner asks and the answer is no. A conservation easement is a voluntary, permanent agreement that limits certain development while you keep ownership, keep living and working the land, and can still pass it on.

From the Field Friday 🌿 Dispatch from Surry County, NC: the Miller easement, where nearly a mile of tributary now runs protected for good, wrapped in the riparian forest that keeps it healthy.

The cheapest flood control we have is already built it just needs protecting. 🌊 As storms intensify and gray infrastructure ages, communities are rediscovering what wetlands do for free: slow and absorb stormwater, filter pollutants, and buffer the costs that otherwise land on cities and taxpayers.

Conservation is permanent. Shouldn't the support behind it be? 🌊 Signing an easement is the beginning, not the end. The land still has to be monitored year after year, its terms upheld, and its protections defended if ever challenged. That work doesn't fund itself and it never stops.

After the Sackett ruling, wetland permits in North Carolina dropped 60% and South Carolina's dropped 22%. That means less restoration work to offset wetland loss. Federal protection is stepping back. A new way to help is coming soon.

In parts of the Prairie Pothole Region, the most important duck-breeding habitat in North America, 50 to 90% of the original wetlands are already gone. Duck numbers there now sit 10% below the long-term average. A new way to help save wetlands is coming soon.

Right now, 90,000 acres of forested wetlands in Mississippi's Yazoo Backwater are at risk from a single Army Corps flood-control project, an area larger than the city of New Orleans. Once filled or drained, wetlands don't come back. A new way to help is coming soon.

Think your land doesn't qualify for conservation? Think again. 🌾 Many conservation nonprofits won't work with working lands, working forests, timberland, or agricultural property. The assumption is that conservation is only for pristine wilderness. We see it differently.

By the EPA’s own estimate, up to 63% of U.S. wetlands could lose federal protection under the narrowed Clean Water Act. That is nearly two-thirds of the places that filter our water and soften floods. A new way to help save them is coming soon.

Join the Current. 🌊 Conservation isn't a single moment it's a steady flow of protection, stewardship, and care that continues long after a project is complete. Keeping that current moving is what permanent protection actually requires. That's why we're inviting you to become a monthly Champion.
