this movie never fails to amaze: - largest international cast of the period - terrence young left james bond to work on it - ending his time with the franchise - ends with a thank you to reza shah - absolute garbage
The film is based on an idea by Ian Fleming, the James Bond creator. Funded in part by a grant from Xerox, it was produced by the United Nations and the stars received a salary of $1.[2] Terence Young left the direction of Thunderball to make the film.

One of the props from Thunderball features in the beginning of the film - the underwater watch provided to James Bond (Sean Connery) by Q (Desmond Llewelyn), with a built-in Geiger Counter which in the former film is meant to detect a nuclear weapon, and in this production to permit long-range tracking of drug shipments which contain a radioactive marker.

wonder how they came to this crystal clear analysis
"Despite the extensive and unambiguous historical documentation, the Armenian Genocide remains to this day the subject of an institutionalized campaign of denial and minimization, including a manipulative rewriting of history, mainly by the Turkish government," said Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Saar, who brought the decision to the government."

well why would we care about adverse impacts or the production of inferior social outcomes. do the rich not see the seizing of their wealth as an adverse impact that produces inferior social outcomes for them?
The more compelling argument against billionaires has to do not with the ethical implications of the extreme inequality that they arguably promote, but with the adverse real-world consequences, which you don't have to be a fire-breathing Marxist to acknowledge. There is plenty of evidence that extreme inequality produces inferior and even perverse social outcomes.

AI can't replace a lack of supports (which is what the report says is the issue) also, in the auditor generals report notes that incarcerated Indigenous & Black people were more likely to have their initial assessment overriden & put in higher security & less likely to receive overrides for minimum
We also found that Indigenous offenders were more likely than non‑Indigenous offenders to have their initial security placement increased to a higher level through overrides of the Custody Rating Scale’s results. As well, we found fewer overrides down to minimum security for Indigenous offenders than for non‑Indigenous offenders.

reading thru records/reports from thailand's early crop substitution (now called "alternative development") & rehabilitation programme it's sort of strange to see someone be absolutely shocked that the prohibition of opium led to heroin use (circa 1972)
Heroin was not a problem until opium was totally band [sic] in 1959
and then it spread like wild fire. Until about only a year ago it was mainly consumed by smoking of the heroin (crystals in a cigarette) or by "chasing the dragon" (inhaling the smoke from heated heroin through a "straw" or rolled up piece of paper). But today increasing numbers are using injection.

for international women's day, i bring these articles written by addiction science journalist and the editor of the Addiction Research Foundation's 1970-80s publication "The Journal" from International Womens Year 1975, Anne MacLennan 1/ #histsci #histsky #Drugsky #HarmReduction
Cartoon on right, two women sitting together in one of their houses, dishes piled up behind them. The woman sort of 'manspreading' (one could say), says, "I envy him his tough day at the office - it's such a perfect excuse to get smashed..."

Text of Anne's article
Equal time for women
FOR THE addictions field to believe that the call for attention to women's specific needs and problems is a middle-class phenomenon that can be taken lightly, is wrong.
Slowly but certainly, the mistake of lumping women alcoholics and addicts with men is beginning to haunt us. That we ignore them a t our peril and, more important, at the peril of the next generation, was dramatically illustrated in a paper presented to the National Drug Abuse Conference in New Orleans.
Of 118 women in 44 therapeutic communities, 44% had had incestuous relationships by the time they were 15 years old. One can
only surmise what sort of homes those children lived in, what
other relationships they had. But today, some of their children are in custody or treatment for alcoholism, addictions, and other "anti-social" behavior.
As the paper's presenter, Dr. Judianne Densen-Gerber, put it:
How often can we expect a female child, violated at three, four,
or five years old by a man from whom she had every right to
expect protection from sexual exploitation, develop into a coping.
functioning member of society? And what can we expect of her
children? (Many of the women studied had several, said Dr. Judianne Denser Gerber.)
Although more investigation is needed, to deny the potentially profound implications o f this study in the etiology of alcoholism and addiction in women would be rash.
Troubled men and troubled women make troubled children to-
gether. To set women above men would be no more right than
having neglected them. But to fail to give them equal time and
attention is to fail the next generation.

CIn Memoriam IWY
JUST TWO months to go and we all can relax. International
Women's Year will be over.
Interesting, stimulating. Occasionally even amusing Just about everyone, for instance, had or heard a ribald laugh at some stage about the government's chief contribution to the year — the slogan Why Not? They may also have heard the rumor that in 1976, the new buttons would read Not Bloody Likely.
But that's the way many will remember it. And they will think, and even say,: "That's it. We've listened. Now get on with it and let the rest o f u s get back t o reality:" To be fair, there will be women as well as men thinking this way.
In the alcohol and drug field, as in almost every other, awareness of women and their problems increased this year. Women seemed suddenly more obvious, more prominent. For as much a s any other reason, perhaps it was simply because they were now beginning to be seen as something more than a research sub-section on wives, mothers or daughters of alcoholics. They were beginning to be seen a s people with their own problems.
In the context of the emphasis everywhere on women, the focus on them i n this field probably created the mistaken impression that a n inordinate amount of time and energy was being devoted to their needs. Women are "cutting themselves off", "doing exactly the same thing men have been doing", some people said. Their aims are fine, they said, but their tactics... Implicit in the unfinished suggestion needed a few men to show them how to get things done.
These people, and they include women, thought they were seeing their fears confirmed when, in August, in Levis, Quebec, the Canadian Foundation on Alcohol and Drug Dependencies held its consultation on women and, in September, when the ARF's Eastern Ontario regional office, with the aid of the Non Medical Use of Drugs Directorate, held a provincial consultation on women with alcohol and drug problems.
The first was attended by men and women representing the
field across Ca…

like you really can't say that he didn't fucking call it (1995)
an essay which originally appeared in Le Monde Diplomatique, Virilio maps the social consequences:

What lies ahead is a disturbance in the perception of what reality is; it is a shock, a mental concussion. And this outcome ought to interest us. Why? Because never has any progress in a technique been achieved without addressing its specific negative aspects. The specific negative aspect of these information superhighways is precisely this loss of orientation regarding alterity (the other), this disturbance in the relationship with the other and with the world. It is obvious that this loss of orientation, this non-situation, is going to usher in a deep crisis which will affect society and hence, democracy.

i take a lot of my inspiration for thinking about scale from Max Liboiron's "Pollution is Colonialism" counting the harms of alcohol-human engagements over a persons life & by quantity, then comparing them to the violence of the drug supply is what they call "scalar mismatch"
Scales of Harm and Violence

Scale is not about relative size. Scale is about what relationships matter within a particular context." For example, if you look at live skin cells under a micro-scope, you'd notice osmosis (flowy water movement) and other activities taking place within the cellular membrane. If you put away the microscope and look at the arm the skin cells come from, you'd notice goose bumps and tattoos. Even though arms are made of skin cells, they do not act like skin cells, and chopping an arm into little pieces does not produce skin cells-though it might produce a prison sentence. Cells and arms are fundamentally different things, even though they are intimately, inextricably related. Scale is a way to talk about this onto-logical shift, where the processes that matter (relaaaatiooooons!) are of a fun-damentally different sort at different scales without severing relations that cross scales. My example from the introduction of the difference in your relations with your daughter versus the mail carrier is an example of scale: who is closer? What kinds of relationships and obligations matter, depending on how "close" someone is? You can talk about the differences between types of kin as scale.

TL;DR Health Canada added stipulations to keeping the Parkdale SCS open that were arbitrary and impossible/unreasonable to meet at least one person is already dead - this at a moment where TOs drug supply is basically all medetomidine, super potent xylazine/clonidine-like drug
Health Canada’s new requirements
But on Nov. 7, just two weeks before the site’s provincial funding was to run out, Health Canada said it would require the centre to meet two new conditions.

The first was that the site secure its own funding, which Robertson says was possible to do for one year.

Health Canada’s second condition was that the site create a “community safety plan” that was approved by local police. The site had only eight days to comply, according to Robertson.

Robertson says that the government’s language indicated the site was expected to take responsibility for vandalism, theft and disorder — not just on its property but across the entire neighbourhood.

like... this is from the first UN coca Inquiry (1950), which despite still racist argued against restricting coca in Aymara & Quichuas communities in Bolivia & Peru - note how (despite colonialism) it says not addictive what did the WHO expert committee come back with? 'it's basically addiction;
In the light of this definition, the observations of the Commission show that coca-leaf chewing is not an addiction (toxicomania) but a habit. It may, however, in some individuals, become an addiction, but generally it can be given up like other habits.
Coca-leaf chewing has all the characteristics of a habit. It is easy to teach the young soldier not to chew.
No abstinence symptoms are seen. But if he comes back to his fotiner surroundings, where everybody chews, he quickly becomes a chewer again.
Chewing in primitive Indian society means to be grown up, manlike, and is the reason why most boys chew after they reach puberty.
As a habit, coca-leaf chewing is not bound to certain climatic conditions. Workers from the Altiplano who work on the San Lorenzo Islands, near Lima, were found to chew. They sere absent from their homes for about six montns, but had not abandoned their habit.
The Commission learned that wild Indians of the Urubamba Valley, from the jungle of the plainland south-east of Quillabamba, acquired the habit of chewing from contact with the half-civilized Indian workers.6.2 Consideration of the use of the definitions in the Report of the Commission of Enquiry on the Coca Leaf 14
The Report of the Commission of Enquiry on the Coca Leaf clearly shows that coca chewing is detrimental to the individual and to society.
The committee, therefore, was of the opinion that coca chewing comes so closely to the characteristics of addiction as defined at its second session that it must be defined and treated as an addiction, in spite of the occasional absence of some of those characteristics

even nancy, my supervisor, doesn't have ibogaine on her list and she wrote the book on Lexington (well 2)
Compounds tested at Lexington included many in regular use today: alcohol; barbiturates; buprenorphine; clonidine; codeine; cyclazocine;
Demerol; Dilaudid; heroin; LSD; mescaline; methadone; nalorphine, nalox-one, naltrexone, and other narcotic antagonists used to reverse opiate over-dose; major and minor tranquilizers, such as Miltown and Equanil; sedative-hypnotics, such as Seconal; marijuana and delta-9-THC; and cough syrups. Buprenorphine, a pharmacotherapy for opiate addiction not FDA-approved until 2003, was pioneered at the ARC by Donald Jasinski, who first glimpsed its potential in the 1970s.

like this is wild... you think SACA, where the LPC literally strung the ndp along on dental & pharma for months was a victory it's not that these weren't good things, but the LPC took advantage of NDP unpreparedness to stall the agreement, forcing ndp compromise... that's the point of failure
What made the 2025 election even more devastating for many New Democrats, was that it followed the historic policy gains the Party achieved in the 44th Parliament through its Confidence and Supply Agreement (CASA) with the Liberals Dental care, pharmacare and anti-scab legislation were a source of enormous pride for New Democrats (yes, some invariably proclaimed "it didn't go far enough!" as New Democrats are want to do..). In some parts of the country, not only did the Party not reap any electoral rewards for the results accomplished through the CASA - it was punished. In some regions, voters told our candidates and volunteers that because of CASA the NDP was too closely linked to Justin Trudeau, whose deep unpopularity had rendered him toxic to many voters.

patients are supposed to be put on buprenorphine for 7 days minimum, prior to sublocade induction (if you go online the people who tend to do best on sublocade often have been on bup for a long time) doi-org/j.ajem.2024....
BUP-ER is indicated for people with moderate to severe OUD who have been initiated and stabilized on a transmucosal buprenorphine-containing product for a minimum of seven days (Indivior UK Limited, 2022). The product monograph suggests that individuals receive a BUP-ER injection of 300 mg/month for two months, followed by 100 mg/month; however, they may be transitioned back to 300 mg/month if they do not demonstrate a satisfactory clinical response to the 100mg dose (Indivior UK Limited, 2022). BUP-ER must be administered via abdominal subcutaneous injection by a healthcare provider, with a recommended dosing interval of 28 days (Indivior UK Limited, 2022; META:PHI, n.d.).

look i think it's good to be critical of journalists, and i have my criticisms of althia raj myself, but she's good at her job the quote above is from a bloc mp & the govt is not denying it
Hidden in the federal government's 634-page omnibus bill C-15, the Budget Implementation Act, is a mneasure that has so far escaped scrutiny. Under the pretext of regulatory efficiency, Prime Minister Mark Carney plans to grant cabinet ministers the power to exempt any individual or company from any federal law on the books except for the Criminal Code for up to six years. The measure wasn't included in the version of the Liberals' Nov. 4 budget that was given to reporters. It was not discussed in the government's speeches in Parliament about this bill. No opposition party aside from the Bloc Québécois seems to have noticed it was there until the Star pointed it out. While the bill lays out a plan for a minister to partially inform the public of such an order, there are no timelines. The minister may also "exclude information that, in the minister's opinion, would be inappropriate to make publicly accessible for reasons that include safety or security considerations or the protection of confidential or personal information."

The Treasury Board Secretariat suggests the measures are necessary for regulators to keep pace with technological change and find flexible ways to evaluate whether products or services can be safely introduced in the Canadian marketplace.

there is this idea that sublocade, a subcutaneous injection of a buprenorphine formulation, gradually releases peaking in the 2nd week and then faltering off i don't know where this myth comes from indivior's graph shows a sharp spike and then drop
graph showing levels of buprenorphine first with suboxone, with peaks and drops as each 24 hour dose is taken. on the blue line which is sublocade the line shoots up at day 1, and based on the comparison of suboxone i would say a week of peak effects and then it drops like a sharp diagonal

it's easy to forget this in the fentanyl era, but ODs can happen from many substances - a "vaccine against overdose" doesn't exist and if you've taken away their drug of choice w/o their consent, they're probably going to be reckless w/ something they're less familiar with
Opioid blockers
There is also medication, long-acting opioid antagonist (blockers) that can be administered, but only if under care, while the person is detoxing. It requires a period of time in hospital to have it be given.
"It is not, but it is almost like a vaccine against overdose for a period of time," Eby said.
He said if a child who is addicted receives that medication, it gives them protection against brain injury and death due to overdose.

But there was also a family link. As everyone knows, Kropotkin could trace his ancestry to the ancient Rurik dynasty that ruled Russia before the upstart Romanovs and which, from the first century CE, controlled the trade routes between Moscow and the Byzantine Empire. Nicholas's branch of the family had been sent out to patrol the Black Sea. But Nicholas was a spiritual man and sought an escape from the piracy and brigandage for which his Russian Viking family was famed. So he settled under a new name in the southern lands of the Empire, now Greece, and decided to use the wealth that he had amassed from his life of crime to alleviate the sufferings of the poor

My patient is discontinuing PA. How do I taper and discontinue prescribed alternatives?
Individuals who discontinue PA and are not co-prescribed or transitioned to long-acting medications such as OAT or
fentanyl patch are at high risk of returning to unregulated opioid use and experiencing related harms, including drug
toxicity death. Discontinuation of PA medication without transition to alternative pharmacological options should be
viewed as a last resort
Discuss and document the risks of medication discontinuation (e.g., drug poisoning if returning to the unregulated
supply) with patients and encourage transition to alternative options
If indicated, increase the OAT dose for people who have been receiving both OAT and PA as PA is discontinued, in
order to address cravings and withdrawal symptoms
Individuals who expressly wish to discontinue PA without transition to OAT or other medication options should be
offered a gradual taper in order to manage withdrawal symptoms and cravings and reduce the risk of subsequent drug
poisoning
Tapering doses of PA for existing patients does not need to be witnessed if it is completed by December 29, 2025
Patients who report they have not been using their prescribed medication do not need a taper
