Why do websites no longer use any element IDs, and all the class names are gibberish? I'm reduced to using aria-labels and worse to select elements in my userCSS. Even Radio-Canada is like this... 😭

This leads me to a related thought about the current technological milieu: You probably remember the day that Rogers' network went down. Along with it went every payment terminal in a grocery store. I went to the store with cash, and they *still* couldn't sell me anything, because the inventory […]

This whole rant was sparked by my looking for a portable radio for when I go on a trip next year, because I knew I would be without cell connectivity for multiple days at a time in a region where weather can be extremely variable. I knew that the radio weather service existed because I used to […]

And I see programs like the one in Quebec to connect rural residents to high-speed internet — which is great, but the government is just paying private companies to install the connection. The company gets to keep the hardware they install. If we're going to pay for it, shouldn't it be a public […]

Having connectivity, at the very least for emergency alerts, weather updates, and basic phone calls is something that Canada should be much more concerned about for its residents. It's a safety issue. I remember driving in the Okanagan and seeing a wildfire that had been sparked by lightning. We […]

In general, I lament the loss of services where you only needed a receiver in order to get access to the service. Radio is a perfect mode of disseminating information to people in a given area. There is even a visual version of this for television: many areas still have 6 or more channels […]

I can't believe that the Canadian government shut down the weather radio service. How is anyone supposed to get weather updates outside of a city now? This was an essential service and they just turned it off and told people to use an app, when there is no public telecom operator, and the vast […]

If the VeggieKarte.de creator notices an uptick in traffic starting now, it's because HappyCow just sent out a weird email about how they're shifting focus and want more money, and now everyone is asking me about "the OSM equivalent".

I present: El(mo) Niño #climate
The puppet character Elmo stands in front of a chart of Pacific Ocean temperatures with his arms outstretched. The chart is almost entirely red, which indicates that ocean temperatures are far above normal. The original image that Elmo is taken from shows him in front of flames — the implication of this edit is that the world is metaphorically on fire.

The Nulea one that has a vertical axis for the buttons is horrible because the ball is still low, which is basically the opposite of ergonomic. I'm looking for one that basically has the ball on top.

Someone needs to make an 85° (basically vertical) trackball. There is a hole in the market. I've got the most vertical trackball that seems to exist, and even it is not vertical enough.

I feel like #OpenStreetMap contributors who are cyclists will hate this: in Montreal, we have a novel (and evil) kind of rack that chomps down on your bike like some kind of monster with big teeth. I have no idea how to tag them, but I avoid them at all costs.

Starting on a draft for the front rack bag. Looks like it will perfectly hold two six-packs! (I'm using the height of a standard can as the metric for the rigid section's height because the ratio looks good, and it's as good of a standard as any)
