I find it difficult to object to people who want to *exclude* themselves from Englishness, but only if they don’t do so on the basis of objective factual characteristics. But, as far as I can see, those on the right always do so, thus hoovering up everyone else with those characteristics.

But why should they, the latter group, get away with a narrow Englishness? Part of the problem is the language of “identity”, which suggests it’s all Ultimately individual. But these things can’t be. The common or garden racist‘s insistence that people of colour *can‘t* be English isn’t different!

But Bravaman isn’t saying in some solipsistic way that she doesn’t *feel* English herself. She’s saying she isn’t - can’t be - English because she doesn’t have generations of “heritage”. That’s transferrable. Her position doesn’t make sense unless no one else is English sans “heritage”.

I am just astonished that someone would NOT butter one side of each slice. It is something so weird it had never occurred to me. First, obvs butter is always a good thing. Second, it acts as a barrier to the sogginess of the filling. your way, you‘d have one soggy side and one un-soggy side.

Ah, so, that’s it! I’ve see people objecting to two butterings before, and assumed that the practice they were objecting to was buttering both sides of one slice of bread, which would, indeed, be odd, and messy. But then again, not buttering both internal sides is bonkers.

In the 2000s, when I had quite a lot to do with the Welsh Government, they had a long term rented set of meeting rooms and offices in Shrewsbury. It was not so much Glendower irridentism as that it was easier for people from both North and South to get to than anywhere actually in Wales.
