May 2025 was me doing the most random shit after losing Mr Bear International Chicago was a blessing and a curse bc I got to meet the best people ever, while I was absolutely not in the proper headspace to compete at all. I got real thrown off when I experienced the Asian invisibility of the US.

Since posting about this event I have been made aware that this treatment from Rob the owner is not rare, and l am not backing down until a change is made. If we allow this kind of behavior in our community it's not a safe space.

The Men of ONYX Southwest recently produced an event at the Tool Shed in Palm Springs. We want to share what happened and why it matters.
In the weeks leading to the event several agreements made with the bar's owner, Rob, kept changing with little notice. Granted, it's his bar, and he can do whatever he wants, and honestly our relationship started in a good place. But it started to feel less like a good faith experience as we got closer to the bar night.
Our agreed-upon donation got cut from $1,000 to $750 because, in Rob's words, DJ Honey Davenport was "too expensive." We said, "OK and thank you!" because something is better than nothing. So, a member of ONYX SW offered to pay $250 of personal funds to make an even $1,000 for the organization as originally mentioned in the business meeting.
We'd also been told we could sell Jello shots as part of our normal fundraising, something we do at all our events, and were told the day before we couldn't. We mentioned it several times throughout the planning process because it's what we do at our events, but we said OK.
On the afternoon of the event, Rob contacted Honey and demanded country music be played from 8 to 10 p.m., which isn't what we do at our events. We then called Rob to reiterate what type of music we typically play because this is how we show up and how we produce our events.

He said, "Well if your DJ is good, he can handle it." During his set, Honey was approached by Rob about the music, and then a patron made a racial comment about the music. Honey made the decision to leave to protect themselves. We support this and fully stand by DJ Honey Davenport. We later found out a second DJ had been hired to be there all night "just in case." Just in case of what? Rob had mentioned multiple times that Honey was too expensive, and when it came time for our payout, he wrote ONYX a check for $1,200.
We believe that extra money was pulled from Honey's fee since they left early. We told Rob thanks, but please give us the agreed upon $750 and pay Honey what you both agreed upon for their fee.
We were invited to produce an event celebrating People of Color and spent the night feeling like we were being asked to stay in the background. We felt like the help.
There seemed to be an underlying fear that house music or a POC vibe might make people uncomfortable. It was giving you want POCs at the bar, but you don't want us to be "too ethnic." That feeling was discouraging and it made us very uncomfortable.
The Men of ONYX exist because of issues like this... because representation matters. If you want a more diverse community in your space, you've got to learn what it takes to create one and not merely invite POCs in name only but appreciate ALL of what we bring. We hope Tool Shed takes a real look at what happened and finds a path forward.

I miss my IML siblings. I’ve my own feelings about my own communities, and listening to their step aside speeches spark something in me when I need it most. Rene’s (Mr PSL24, IML47) speech on community-building happened the time I had (well, have) hardships with mine.
