Because of ArtFight's recent rule clarification, I've seen discussion on whether tracing your own photos is the same as references them. This is, in my opinion, a matter of semantics. Tracing your own photos IS a method of using them as reference. It is perfectly normal and doesn't hurt anyone. #Art
a four stage image with the words "a way to use your ow photo refs" at the time. Step one, a photo of my hand. Step 2, a directly traced image from the photo. Step 3, a modified sketch to adjust for character anatomy and style. Step 4, a finished painted anthro animal hand.

Wizard 81 featured a drawing tutorial from then Gen 13 artist, Gary Frank to master the art of rendering hands in comic book illustration. Apparently they wanted make sure the lack of recognizable feet in the 90's was not repeated with hands in the new millennium😉

5) continued... Continue selecting each color and shade! I usually add a new layer underneath the "Colored" layer to fill in/select each color separately. I merge them back to the "Colored" layer. Or, just use the magic wand tool! Add sparkles or shines using the "Light" layer. I do this for hair, eyes, jewels, glitter- whatever requires shine.

6) Colored Lines! In the inks folder, click on the layer you want. Like the shirt/orange layer. Lock the transparent pixels. Select the darkest color that the line surrounds. Next, choose a darker color like above on the color wheels (Move the orange color down to the darker side and more saturated. Move the color on the hue ring to the left). Fill in the layer with that darker color! Next, take an airbrush. Do the same thing except choosing a lighter color and airbrush the lines there. Do it for all the line layers! You can merge the inks when you're done.7) Finished! And you're done! Add more details, put on a background- whatever! When you're finished save it as a .png file and there you go.

This method is my ABSOLUTE go to process in creating finished pieces. But it is at a basic level. Afterwards, on that "Character" folder, I add all sorts of filters and effects that really play around with the atmosphere the character or subject is put in. Things get crazy! Too crazy... Thank you for viewing my tutorial. Hope it helps!

Suuuper old, but thought I'd post one of my art tutorials here anyways ( ˶ˆ꒳ˆ˵ ) 🖍️ #art #tutorial #arttutorial (1/2)
Rainboopz's Art Process! For those who were curious, I made a tutorial on the way I normally create my finished pieces, whether they be characters, full illustrations, props, etc. Enjoy!

1) Sketch! I use Clip Studio Paint EX and my canvases are 300dpi and I go 10in or higher. I start with just a quick sketch usually in one pass because any longer and I will start crying.

2) Ink! Lower opacity and start inking. As long as I have a crisp pen brush I'm gucci! Smoothing is a bit high. Tedious, but I separate my inks. The skin is all in one layer and the eyes and hair in the other, etc. I might seperate the layers by color or by articles of clothing and label it (or not it be like that sometimes). Just make sure you have a system!3) Prepare Folders! Finished inking? Dope. Create a folder and put your inking folder in there. Now create the template I have right here. 3 layers clipped onto the colors layer. This is my base setup. I'll be referring to these layer names for the time being. I might add more layers like for details, but do as you wish!

Layers: Character Folder > Inks Folder and 3 layers = Light (Add setting), Hard Shade (Multiply setting), Soft Shade (Multiply setting) CLIPPED ONTO Colors.

4) Add Color! Be on the "Colors" layer. I use the bucket tool and "refer to other layers". Fill in the shirt! I use "paint unfilled areas" brush to get any white spots. Then, do CTRL + SHIFT + D to select that area that I will edit. DO NOT DESELECT YET.5) Shading! Go to "Soft Shade" layer. Select the current color and with a soft airbrush, brush the area lightly where you'd think a slight shade would be. Go to "Hard Shade" layer. With a hard brush shade the still selected area. Also, I made my own shading colors above! I give pink shades to orange/red/yellow and yadda yadda. Same layer, I choose a color swatch darker and shade any darker areas. Don't go overboard or it'll look muddy! 4) Either do the eraser airbrush or use the airbrush but check the transparent swatch. Lightly brush away some shadows for a softer look. Then can you deslect!

P.S. I forgot to keep the selection on these pics...
