regardless, separating the art from the artist (i.e. its context) results in missing so much in any kind of analysis or enjoyment of the work. it’s best to look at these things w/ a critical eye, and engaging most with what you appreciate from it, rather than trying to erase or ignore certain parts.

that’s where donda 2 sits for me. it’s so endlessly fascinating as art, but i mourn where things ended up for ye and what he did in the aftermath of the unfinished mess, both applying to the music and in the personal affairs that informed it. (5/5)

reminds me a lot of Donda 1 in that way, but without any kind of barrier in how personal it can truly get, even when the walls are higher than they’ve ever been and the project remains so incomplete. (4/5)

D2 is among the truest reflections of its creator in such a particular time in his life, w/o it completely devolving into a project that ends up overtaken by spontaneous self-destructive emotion. you can see this with tracks like security being alongside with sci-fi and lord lift me up. (3/?)

even more than he allowed on 808s, or even later on if we want to talk about ye or Donda, there’s a raw honesty in both the ugliness of the emotion as well as the heartbreak and desperation, which you can feel permeates the entire tracklist and how scattered the thoughts and emotions are. (2/?)

i think that’s kinda what’s compelling to me about it. there is still that filtering through an artistic lens, and i can see how it might have come together in a way that sounds like something “Kanye West” would have released before; but at the same time it’s a bit of the mask slipping. (1/2)
