Although not mentioned in this article, zonal pricing also risked disincentivising industrial electrification and decarbonisation, let alone impacting the competitiveness of industries like steel. Good to see @uksteel.org 's concerns being heard and zonal finally being put to bed.

US exports account for 9% of UK steel exports by value and 7% by volume - mostly specialist steel for defence, oil and gas, construction equipment and packaging. During challenging market conditions, global overcapacity, high energy costs, & weak demand, the blow to our exports will be detrimental.

Competitive electricity prices are absolutely essential for the steel industry to survive within a highly competitive global market. The Government has yet to demonstrate that zonal pricing will not harm energy-intensive industries.
