In case you missed it, there's a new book available on the long-term studies at #Wytham Wood in Oxfordshire. It's an Oxford Uni research site and also an ECN long-term monitoring site. Our site manager, Denise spoke at the launch last month: tinyurl.com/WYT-book @ox.ac.uk #LTER
ECN Site Manager, Denise Pallett from the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology, speaking at the launch of the new book 'Wytham Woods: How a Landscape Works'. The text on the screen behind her reads 'Wytham Woods as part of the Environmental Change Network'.

Shrubs are expanding on European #mountains. Research involving ECN analysed over 20yrs of #vegetation #monitoring #data from permanent plots across #alpine summits in Europe’s major mountain ranges, including observations at ECN's #Cairngorms site: tinyurl.com/mtn-shrubs @ukceh.bsky.social

ECN was involved in an international study on the responses of European plants to climate warming. We contributed data collected at our high altitude Cairngorms ECN site run by @ukceh.bsky.social: ecn.ac.uk/news/europea... #ClimateChange #monitoring #research #ecosystems #LTER @ukri.org

Here's a selection of fixed-point photos taken at ECN sites in 2025. The rushing Trout Beck (Moor House, December); green glowing trees (Wytham Woods, April); a field basking in the sun (Rothamsted, July); woodland path (Cairngorms, February). See more at: ecn.ac.uk/sites/fixed-...
The grey-blue Trout Beck stream meandering through golden-coloured, sun-washed upland grassland at Moor House in the Pennine hills.Taken deep within Wytham Woods, the trees have bright green leaves above an equally green woodland floor.A recently mown field of grass ar Rothamsted with, in the middle distance a single dark-leaved tree. In the background, beyong another field, are more trees. The sky is fluffy white clouds against blue.A narrow woodland path winds through a conifer woodland. it is bordered by low shrubby plants such as heather and broom. Scottish mountains are just visible in the distance.

Brrr! 🥶Some icy conditions at Trout Beck, Moor House, earlier this week. Moor House in the North Pennines is one of our ECN long-term environmental #monitoring sites. See: ecn.ac.uk/sites/site/t... #LTER #environment #research #data. [Photo: E. Potter, UKCEH]

We had a great meeting today with our wonderful, dedicated terrestrial site managers 👏. We shared updates from our ECN long-term #environmental research and #monitoring sites. It was an opportunity to share successes and challenges and to keep our network going. #research #data #LTER

'Moor House – an outdoor laboratory' describes the wealth of research undertaken over 70 years at Moor House National Nature Reserve. An accompanying file lists the 1000+ publications describing scientific studies of this northern Pennines area. #ecology #environment #research #monitoring #LTER

We're using bioacoustic sensors to monitor birds and bats at our long-term monitoring and research site in the Cairngorms, operated by @ukceh.bsky.social: ecn.ac.uk/news/bioacou... 🦅🦇🎤 #monitoring #research #environment #species #LTER
A bioacoustic sensor monitoring bird calls in the Cairngorms. It is powered by a solar-charged battery and is sited in rough semi-wooded vegetation.

It was good to catch up with our brilliant site managers at a meeting today. They do a brilliant job, visiting their sites regularly to collect data and samples, and to maintain equipment. They do this all year round, whatever the weather and ECN wouldn't happen without them. Thank you! 👏

On their regular visits, site managers at 4 ECN sites take a fixed-point photo, a visual record of the site. We've now built up an extensive archive of such photos (the earliest from 1997), some of which you can view online: ecn.ac.uk/sites/fixed-.... Here's just a small selection from this year.

It was a frosty start this morning at Rothamsted, a site in our network monitored by @rothamsted.bsky.social. We take regular fixed point photos at several of our sites and have been doing so for many years. Read more about our photo archive here ecn.ac.uk/sites/fixed-...
A view over a green field with frost on the grass in the foreground. In the middle distance is a large tree, and more trees beyond. The sky is blue, partly cloudy and it is sunny.
