Masdevallia Haven Patricia flowers most of the year. The colours of M. notosibirica are carried forward in this hybrid, with the flower shape coming from M. fuchsii #Orchidaceae

First Catasetum Elizabeth Wills blooms this year show a change in flower colouring, with the addition of vivid yellow highlights on the petals, particularly the lip. UK heatwave temperatures appear to be inhibiting anthocyanin accumulation during flower development #Orchidaceae

My miniature Platystele stenostachya [(Rchb. f.) Garay; 1962], found from Mexico to S. Tropical America. Maximum plant dimensions (w x h) are 163 mm x 93 mm. There are 67 inflorescences, with open blooms and buds. Blooms open sequentially. Like me, it is not enjoying the UK heatwave #Orchidaceae

My second Stelis emarginata, which flowers reliably two months later each year. Since the species grows across a latitudinal range from Mexico down to Peru, at elevations between 1800 and 3500m, the species is understandably variable #Orchidaceae

First bloom on my Ophrys speculum [Link, 1799], a Mediterranean/Iberian terrestrial orchid. It is pollinated by a male Dasyscolia ciliata wasp. Males are lured by the flower, which mimics the female wasp as part of Pouyannian mimicry #Orchidaceae

Masdevallia velifera (Rchb.f 1874) a welcome distraction on a stormy day. This 'Veiled Masdevallia' is native to the cloud forests of 🇨🇴 . For me, the malodorous fragrance is only really discernable when the blooms first open #Orchidaceae
