The Washington State Court of Appeals has rejected Tacoma's attempt to nullify the Workers' Bill of Rights initiative, saying the city cannot use a missed election deadline to deny voters their say. Full response: www.ufcw367.org/post/victory... #TacomaWA
The Washington Court of Appeals has ruled that the City Council must take the steps required to place the Workers’ Bill of Rights initiative before voters. This decision vindicates nearly 10,000 Tacoma residents who signed petitions for the initiative, which would establish stronger standards for wages, scheduling, access to hours, and workplace safety.
"The court’s decision reinforces our constitutional rights as citizens and shows that when the people are united in our fight, we win." - Patrick Lowery, UFCW 367 member

Over two dozen UFCW 367 members, reps, and leaders packed the courtroom to witness the city attempt to keep the Workers' Bill of Rights off the ballot. Our side says that the people deserve to decide. The city's argument? Procedure. Now it's with the WA Court of Appeals, may they rule with wisdom.

But for over a year now, the City has fought to keep it off the ballot. On September 15th, the Washington State Court of Appeals hears the City of Tacoma's latest appeal, another attempt to nullify your signatures.

12,000 Tacoma residents signed an initiative so that their community could vote on a higher minimum wage, secure scheduling, and safer workplaces. 12,000 conversations, led by UFCW 367 members and allies, with one goal: letting voters decide for themselves. That's how democracy is supposed to work.

Chicago's parking meter privatization scandal made it a national example: a public asset leased away and now the public is paying for it. Stand with our AFSCME siblings. Tell Olympia City Council that this public utility should not be sold off for private profit: actionnetwork.org/letters/keep...

Port Angeles already ran this experiment. Its private hauler pushed for rate hikes beyond what the contract allowed, sued the city for $4.8 million, and Port Angeles had to retake control just to protect its residents.

Olympia City Council might trip over a dollar to save a dime. Faced with the cost of a new waste facility, some council members are weighing privatization as the fix.

Crystal's dentist couldn't run her insurance — her dental coverage had lapsed, and she found other members hit the same way. She called the insurers herself, then handed 367 the full picture. Her digging got it fixed fast, for every member affected, not just her. Thank you, Crystal!

Getting terminated feels like the end but for Karlene, it wasn't. She talked to her rep and together they made the case. A simple mistake can be a serious learning experience. She got her job back & now has a 2nd chance at a lifelong career. A termination is severe but it isn't always the last word.

The staff at Nexus Legal Counsel just joined UFCW 367. Their employer voluntarily recognized the union, understanding that workers don't only organize to fix what's broken. Sometimes they organize because they know what they have is worth protecting. Welcome, siblings.
