The US postdoc turns 150 this year, the theme of National Postdoc Appreciation Week. Postdocs in BRAIN Center labs run the experiments behind our work on stroke, brain injury, neuromotor control and cognitive aging. Much of what this field knows in ten years will come from them. #UFBRAINCenter

The brain is 2% of body weight but burns 20% of its energy. When that falters, from injury or aging, brain function changes. Next BRAIN Building webinar: three short talks on brain energy metabolism, moderated by Dr. Michael Jaffee. Mon Oct 12, 6:00–7:30 PM ET, Zoom. bit.ly/BRAINmetabolism

September is National Suicide Prevention Month. Brain injury is an under-recognized risk factor for suicide: depression, anxiety, and PTSD after injury are common, and treatable. If you're struggling, call or text 988, any time. #UFBRAINCenter #BRAINOutreach #SuicidePrevention

The leading cause of traumatic brain injury in older adults is a fall: 81% of TBI-related ER visits in this group (CDC). For Falls Prevention Awareness Week, strength, balance, vision checks and home safety all lower the risk. #UFBRAINCenter #FallsPrevention

uch of what links traumatic brain injury to neurodegeneration runs through a protein called tau. On World Alzheimer's Day, that pathway is where BRAIN Center members work, while UF's Memory Disorders Clinic evaluates people arriving before any diagnosis. 💜 #UFBRAINCenter

What does a head injury at 25 have to do with memory at 70? The 2024 Lancet Commission counts TBI among the 14 modifiable dementia risk factors, and places it in midlife. Most of the 14 are chronic conditions. Brain injury is an event. 💜🧠 #WorldAlzheimersMonth

Do the first 2 weeks predict a long concussion recovery? In a CARE Consortium study w/ BRAIN Center member Russell Bauer, PhD, athletes whose symptoms later lasted past 28 days already had worse, slower-improving symptoms in that window. pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/41731269/ #Concussion #TBI

September is World Alzheimer's Month. A connection that surprises many: a serious brain injury earlier in life can raise the risk of dementia later. But it's a risk factor we can act on, because injury is preventable, protecting the brain is also a way of protecting memory. 💜🧠 #BrainInjury

The ADA was signed July 26, 1990. For brain injury, the disabilities it covers are often invisible: memory, concentration, processing speed. Easing a student back to class after concussion, such as the "return to learn" work of UF's Jay Clugston, MD, is the ADA in practice. #ADA
