The year: 1988. The company: Exxon. Their fear: “a worldwide consensus that action is needed” to mitigate the effects of greenhouse gases – with "substantial negative impacts" on business. Exxon responds by revving up a disinfo campaign like never before. New internal docs offer new insight 🧵
Scan of memo on manila background. Text reads as follows:
To: File
From: F. B. Sprow
Reference: 263.FBS
Date: November 23, 1988
Subject: F&D Concerning Greenhouse Effects
DRAFT
Importance: If a worldwide consensus emerges that action is needed to mitigate against Greenhouse gas effects, substantial negative impacts on Exxon could occur. Any additional R&D efforts within Corporate Research on Greenhouse should have two primary purposes: 1. Protect the value of our resources (oil, gas, coal). 2. Preserve Exxon's business options.

The Super El Niño is breaking charts as well as records, including Climate Reanalyzer's, which previously went to 30 degrees C but had to be updated today. SSTs in this part of the Pacific are in unprecedented territory - and rising - roughly two months before the typical El Niño peak.

It's also the first time a court has established judicial oversight over corporate emissions anywhere in the world. It comes as Western Europe suffers from a record-breaking heatwave, highlighting the urgency of enforcing this ruling and exerting further pressure to curb emissions.
This image is titled "Climate Shift Index: Change in likelihood due to climate change, June 23-27, 2026." It shows a map of Europe and parts of North Africa and western Asia, indicating that daily maximum temperatures reached a climate shift index (CSI) level 5 in cities across Europe, including Madrid, Paris, Rome, and Lyon. A CSI 5 indicates that human-caused climate change made these conditions at least five times more likely, signaling an exceptional climate change event. In the lower right is the logo for Climate Central.

While El Niño typically reduces hurricane activity in the Atlantic, it only takes one storm to make landfall for disaster to strike. In 1992, an El Niño year, Hurricane Andrew resulted in 65 deaths and caused $27.3 billion in damage in South Florida.
