UCSB physics professors John Martinis and Michel Devoret have been awarded the 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics. They were lauded for work that, according to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences, "revealed quantum physics in action," affirming UCSB as the epicenter of quantum research.

We kicked off the new school year with the launch of the BioFoundry for Extreme and Exceptional Fungi, Archaea and Bacteria (ExFAB). After 38 years as a professor at UCSB, John Bowers is retiring. Bowers, a pioneer in lasersand photonics has served as director of the IEE at UCSB since it was founded in 2008 and is also a Distinguished Prof in the Depts of Electrical & Computer Engineering, Materials, and Technology Management.
