With gas prices up 30% and diesel prices at record high since the war started, Congress should be protecting policies that help people and businesses spend less on fuel instead of eliminating them. More efficient vehicles like EVs and technologies like shorepower help people save thousands on fuel.

These CA air quality regulations are among the most cost-effective and technologically feasible tools to meet federal air quality standards. Blocking enforcement could cause CA to rely on less cost-effective and more disruptive tactics to achieve cleaner air.

Recently, the House voted to overturn two California maritime waiver CRAs, which would harm the health of local port communities and California businesses and consumers.

But the fossil fuel industry wants Congress to rollback these policies to keep spending as much money as possible on fuel. They don't care about facts or public health or about the impacts of volatile oil prices on your grocery budget or transportation costs.

And, any policy rolled back via the CRA cannot be put back in place – ever again. Neither can agencies put in place policies that are “substantially the same.” But “substantially the same” hasn’t been defined by Congress nor the courts. Cue: chaos.

Union of Concerned Scientists @ucs.org · 15h
Clear air standards work. They've successfully reduced emissions from fossil-fuel powered cars and trucks which are major contributors to air pollution. They've also saved people money at the gas pump. This progress is now at risk. # CleanerCars

At a time when 152+ million people in the US live in areas with unhealthy air, the Trump admin is ditching its duty to protect clean air from cars & the freight system. Instead of enabling states to lead, it's interfering through an illegal process to gut state clean air standards. 🧵⬇️

Today, the Trump administration finalized a rollback of fuel economy standards for passenger cars and trucks. This move effectively kills the nation's CAFE standards, a program that has saved drivers $321 billion in fuel costs since 2010. Read UCS Statement: act.ucs.org/46NApCk
“The federal government’s decision to gut fuel economy standards is a handout to automakers and oil companies that will strap American consumers already struggling with an affordability crisis...Weakening these standards means drivers will spend more on fuel while having fewer options to choose efficient vehicles."
