What if ranchers could move cattle without ever moving or building a single fencepost? Virtual fencing uses GPS collars that create invisible boundaries that tell cattle where they can and can't go. This helps ranchers guide grazing cattle without having to build physical fencing. 🐂 1/

It’s been almost two year since we first started our long-term 3-NOP feed study at the UC Davis dairy. We have enrolled over 60 cows and collected thousands of measurements on emissions, feed intake, milk production, body weight, body condition, and animal health. 1/

Earlier this month, we said goodbye to 66 cattle as they set off to Washington as part of the last phase to our very first early-life intervention study. And now, we are welcoming 71 steers as part of our second early-life intervention study to the UC Davis Feedlot. 1/

Seaweed isn't a silver bullet to mitigating methane emissions from cattle, but it could be an important first step. At UC Davis, Dr. Ermias Kebreab, DSc and Dr. Matthias Hess are investigating both the potential of seaweed, and what happens to the rumen microbiome when methane is suppressed. 1/

According to the USDA, 20 million acres of farmland have been loss between 2017 and 2022. But what's more, is that a majority of farmers producing the foods we eat are nearing retirement age. Why is this important, and why do we need to bring it up in conversation? 1/

It's not the cow, it's the how. Methane produced by microbes in rumen of cows during digestion. By studying microbes, known as methanogens, researchers developing strategies such as specific feed additives to inhibit enteric methane production while safeguarding animal health & productivity. 1/
