**June was sweltering, but the summer heat didn’t slow down open-source software developers.** Last month delivered a wave of app updates, including the release of Firefox 152 with its streamlined settings, _HandBrake_ resolved its Linux WebM handling and the Audacity 4.0 beta made a brand-new design available for public scrutiny (mainly of the “much better” variety). But underneath those highs – yes, I’m determined to make this heat theme work – a quiet simmer of smaller maintenance updates rolled out too… ### Cine gained _Watch History_ _“Later that day…”_ I spotlighted the _Cine_ Linux video player earlier this year. It’s an MPV-based player with an immersive UI, essential video features (subtitles, audio tracks, playlists) and support for video adjustments (brightness, contrast, zoom and more). Cine 1.7.0 arrived in June with a new _Watch History_ feature. This, as the name suggests, shows you a history of what you’ve watched recently. Open the app without a file and the main screen now has an icon to jump straight into it. This release also fixed the app not unpausing when a new file is opened and an empty title appearing on some desktop taskbars. The app gained new Ukrainian and Tamil translations. _**Cine source code ison Github, or install it from Flathub.**_ ### SuperFile finally made the sidebar configurable _SuperFile_ , a terminal file manager we’ve covered before, released version 1.6.0 last month. Notably, sidebar sections can now be shown, hidden or reordered, allowing you to prune the sidebar to show only what you use. File previews are also more reliable too, following a migration to the Bubble Tea v2 library. The metadata panel now shows decoded inode flags for files on Linux and adds file type byte to the permissions column. _SuperFile_ can now detect binary architecture for ELF, PE and Mach-O executables. Error messages for failed operations convey more detail too. A new `split_file_panel` key function (default key `n`) can be used to open an additional file panel in the same directory. This adds to other navigation fixes, like keeping focus on the current directory when you jump to its parent. SuperFile also has a new logo and a redesigned website. _**Get** **SuperFile 1.6.0 from the project’sGitHub releases page.**_ ### Shotcut brought back external monitor support Open-source video editor _Shotcut_ added external monitor support in its latest stable release, v26.6.25. The feature, accessed via the _Player > External Monitor_ menu, allows editors to show a video preview on a secondary screen. This version also introduces experimental support for OpenFX and VST2/LV2 plugins. The integration is barebones for now: no custom plugin UI, everything runs on the CPU and no compatible plugins are bundled in by default. Linux users can access a new _Settings > Display Method > Vulkan_ option. This requires an app restart to take effect. Additionally, the Shotcut Snap package now use Ubuntu’s native file chooser instead of the built-in Qt one. Finally, while the official release notes highlight a new HDR preview window feature, this does _not_ work on Linux (or Windows ARM) at present. _**Shotcut 26.6 is available now fromshotcut.org, or get it from the Snap Store. **_ ### Plank Reloaded added trash emptying sound effects _Plank Reloaded_ , the revived (and Wayland-friendly) fork of the classic Plank dock, put out a pair of minor releases in June. The quirkier of them adds sound effects to the _Trash_ docklet. When you empty the trash or drag a file into it, you’ll hear a sound (rather like macOS). This only works if event sounds are enabled in your desktop settings, but it’s a cute little touch. The _Clock_ docklet’s calendar popup no longer throws a GTK critical warning when closed, and localises the AM/PM marker for non-English locales. The dock no longer steals focus when running under focus-follows-mouse settings. _**Plank Reloaded is available now from the project’sGitHub releases page.**_ ### Bazaar set out its stall (still slick) Find adaptive apps more easily in Bazaar 0.8.2 Bazaar, the slick GTK4/libadwaita frontend for managing Flatpaks and browsing Flathub, gained some small but appreciable UI tweaks in the latest release. A new mobile search filter makes it easier to find software that plays nice at narrower widths (as useful for window tiling setups as it is actual smartphones), while the storefront offers new _Network_ subcategories. The list of links shown on app listing pages has been converted to a dual-pane view, and those pages no longer shows tag chips (which the main website added for SEO purposes, not much use in a desktop client). **_You can find the latest version ofBazaar on Flathub._** ### Calibre made its content server a web app An update to _Calibre_ , the open-source e-book manager, converter, reader and a few other things besides, landed last month. It biggest changes affects the Calibre Content Server, which lets you browse your ebook library from any device over the web (think _Plex_ , but books). It gains a sidebar for easier navigation and can be installed as Progressive Web App (PWA) on phones, tablets, etc. Inside the app, Calibre’s CSS parser now supports CSS Level 4 selectors, there’s an option to convert PNG images to JPEG or WebP when compressing books, and you can filter your saved searches by keyword. If none of the above has you reaching to upgrade, this might: a security flaw, CVE-2026-53511, was patched in Calibre 9.10.0 to, apparently1, prevent malicious book metadata from running Python code. If you checkout ebooks from unusual libraries, worth updating – just incase. **_Calibre 9.10 is available now fromcalibre-ebook.com_.** ### qBittorrent massaged its WebUI A minor maintenance release landed for popular open-source BitTorrent client _qBittorrent_. qBittorrent 5.2.2 improves D-Bus integration on Linux so users can open a completed file’s folder _and_ actually see that folder open. The built-in RSS reader also resolves a regression with “RSS Smart Episode Filter” regex matching. The qBittorrent WebUI also got fixes, including a session cookie switch to handle cross-site login bugs, bringing back the missing properties panel expand/collapse button and resolving a performance quirk that occurred when toggling the global checkbox. **_Sound good? You can download the latest version fromqbittorrent.org_.** ### Bleachbit added AI cleaners and an AppImage The BleachBit 6.0.1 beta is out for testing, building on the features added in the BleachBit 6.0.0 stable release in May 2026. Of note, _BleachBit_ is now equipped to clean up cruft left by _Claude Code_ , and sweep away Google Chrome’s 4GB AI model, which many users have found was dowloaded in the background whether they made use of the browsers AI tools or not. Deep scan has gotten faster and is able to probe `node_modules`, `venv` and `.angular` directories, which messy developers may be pleased to hear. File shredding is reported to leave fewer recoverable remnants behind, and a new DNS cache cleaner has been added on Windows and Linux (on Linux, run `resolvectl statistics` afterwards to confirm the cache emptied). Data cleaners expand to support multiple _Google Chrome_ and _Microsoft Edge_ profiles rather than just the default one. The tool also adjusts how it clears out old Apache _OpenOffice_ data. On Linux, there are cleaners for _Visual Studio Code_ and _Codium_ , _Profanity_ (a chat client), and the tool can detect and delete data in _LibreWolf_ DEB and _Transmission_ Flatpak builds. This beta also fixes the CLI failing to run as root on Linux with Wayland. **_BleachBit 6.0.1 beta is available fromdownload.bleachbit.org_ **_**– now offering an AppImage**._ ### Praise chorus of music player updates As June 2026 was _particularly_ heavy on music player updates I’m breaking the Linux App Release Roundup format to grouping them together, tersely. You’d be scrolling for the rest of the afternoon if I didn’t. _**High Tide**_ , a GTK4/libadwaita Tidal client for Linux, pushed out v1.5.0. The login page now clarifies that the “Page not found” redirect is expected. It also resolves an issue where the top 5 songs on artists’ pages were duplicated. **_Cantata_** , the Qt-based MPD client, rolled out a minor update. Among changes in v3.5.0 is an update to FontAwesome 7 (used for in-app icons), a fix for dynamic playlists in its Flatpak build and a new Turkish translation. **_DeadBeeF_** , a versatile MPD client, issued v1.10.2. The player now uses the MPRIS plugin rather than custom global hotkeys to manage playback. ReplayGain scanner issues are resolved and a security flaw in `mpg123` got patched. _**Euphonica**_ , a flashy MPD client, saw speedups in album and artist grid loading times in its v9.99.5 beta – 3k albums now load in less than 3s! Plus, Parallelised decoding of images has improved cold-start artwork population. _**Amarok’s**_ new v3.3.3 release fixes system suspend inhibition during playback, irons out issues saving applet layouts and updates the Wikipedia applet to cope with recent formatting changes on the site. _**Audacious**_ v4.6.1 uses the XDG cache directory to store temp files, handles embedded lyrics in more files and gained Georgian translations. For devs, source code now builds on systems with `musl` not `glibc`. ### Other updates of note Alongside those picks, the _Zen_ web browser (a Firefox fork) saw several stable bumps to deliver upstream changes and bug fixes. It also added an improvement of its own: right-click on a pinned tab to define the URL for it. So too of _LibreWolf_ , another popular Firefox fork. Among its changes, DRM now uses a per-site permission, rather working on all requested sites when DRM is enabled. It’s developed have also held off on rolling out Firefox 152’s settings revamp for now. _Ignition_ , a neat GUI tool to add and a control startup apps, scripts and services on Linux, now lets you open a script to fill in the ‘command’ or ‘script’ paths rather than typing out their file locations. * * * _**That’s our look at June’s notable open-source drops. As we launch into the second half of the year – already! – be sure to drop me a line via the contact form of you see or share any Linux app releases you think merit a shoutout next time**._ 1. Calibre is cross-linked to the CVE on SUSE but the CVE itself is ‘reserved’ with no detail showing publicly, so I’m going by what Calibre has said it was about. ↩︎ App Updates Bazaar Cine LRR qbitttorrent

Canonical has published additional details about DirtyClone, the recently disclosed Linux kernel vulnerability that can allow a local user to gain root privileges on affected systems. DirtyClone, tracked as CVE-2026-43503, was publicly disclosed by JFrog on June 25, 2026, and has a CVSS 3.1 score of 8.8 (high severity). Canonical notes the issue was responsibly disclosed to Linux kernel maintainers earlier, with the CVE record published on May 23. The first Ubuntu security updates addressing this vulnerability were released on June 2. Just a reminder that DirtyClone is a local privilege escalation flaw, allowing a local user to gain root access. For container deployments running third-party workloads, Canonical notes the vulnerability could enable container escapes, although no proof-of-concept exploit for this scenario has been published. DirtyClone affects the same components as the previously disclosed Dirty Frag and Fragnesia vulnerabilities. Systems where administrators have already blocked the affected kernel modules as mitigation for those issues are also protected against DirtyClone. For Ubuntu users, the fix is provided through Linux kernel image packages. The following kernel versions include the fix: * Ubuntu 26.04 LTS: 7.0.0-22.22 * Ubuntu 20.04 LTS with 5.15 kernel: 5.15.0-181.191~20.04.1 * Ubuntu 22.04 LTS: 5.15.0-181.191 * Ubuntu 24.04 LTS: 6.8.0-124.124 * Ubuntu 25.10: 6.17.0-35.35 Importantly, Ubuntu 20.04 LTS systems still using the 5.4 kernel remain affected. Older releases, including 14.04 LTS, 16.04 LTS, and 18.04 LTS, are also listed as affected in Canonical’s table. Checking the Linux kernel version. Users can check their currently running kernel version with `uname -r`. Canonical also suggests checking installed kernel image packages with `dpkg -l 'linux-image*' | grep ^ii`. To install the available security updates, Ubuntu users should run the usual package upgrade command: sudo apt update && sudo apt upgradeCode language: Bash (bash) If you prefer to update only the kernel meta package, Canonical provides a targeted command sequence. However, for most users, a full system upgrade is simpler and safer. As with all kernel updates, installing the package is only part of the process. A reboot is required for the system to run the fixed kernel. Canonical also notes that unattended-upgrades is enabled by default on Ubuntu 16.04 LTS and newer, so security updates may install automatically within 24 hours. However, a reboot is still necessary. More details are available in Canonical’s announcement.

omgubuntu.co.uk
**Firefox is adding hardware-acceleratedVulkan Video decoding, saving Nvidia users on Linux the hassle of manually configuring the `nvidia-vaapi-driver` package.** The change will be included in Firefox 153, out July 21, but it will not be enabled by default – not to start with. Instead, users will be able to flip a pair of preferences in `about:config` to try it out, with the awareness that there may be hiccups and edge cases (especially on devices with hybrid graphics, mentioned further down). Given that Nvidia GPUs are capable (understatement klaxon), I was surprised to hear that this didn’t already work. Turns out, Firefox’s disables hardware video decoding for all Nvidia devices on Linux – blanket-style – which is why a community workaround was necessary. Adding native Vulkan Video decoding path to its codebase means workarounds will no longer be required. Vulkan Video is a cross-vendor spec, not an Nvidia-specific one. Firefox’s implementation builds on FFmpeg’s Vulkan decode support. Arm and embedded GPUs were the initial target of this work, resolving a bug about a lack of hardware video decode on Aarch64 Linux at all. Nvidia’s own DGX Spark, an Arm-based desktop AI computer that runs Ubuntu, currently lacks hardware video decoding in Firefox as the GB10 chip doesn’t support VA-API or V4L2. Mozilla’s tracking bug for fixing that depends on this Vulkan Video work. ### Try it out in beta and nightly builds There’s no compatibility list you can check as Firefox tests your GPU’s Vulkan support the first time you enable it, so the only way to know if it works is to try it. You’ll need to be running Nvidia driver version 595.x or later and Firefox 153 beta (or nightly). Head to `about:config` and flip these preferences to `true`: * `media.hardware-video-decoding-vulkan.enabled` * `media.hardware-video-decoding-vulkan.direct-export.enabled` Restart Firefox and then play a video that uses a codec your GPU can use accelerated playback for (anything H264 is a safe bet). To check if it’s working use `nvtop` or `MOZ_LOG="FFmpegVideo:5" firefox`. On laptops with dual-GPUs, i.e., integrated and discrete Nvidia graphics, some users have reported the discrete GPU waking unnecessarily while Vulkan video decode is enabled, causing a brief stutter when switching workspaces mid-playback. Mozilla hasn’t indicated in which version of Firefox this will be turned on by default, but even when it is it will be ‘gated’ to ensure it’s only those with compatible Nvidia driver and hardware are looped in to use it. _(via XDA – thanks Winston)_

When victims become killers and liberators become perpetrators
**Lazarus Kwedhi** There is a moment in every nation’s life when it must look in the mirror and ask a simple question: who have we become? South Africa is at that moment, and Namibia watches, because our histories are braided together by African nativism, colonialism, liberation, and now by the same dangerous test: what do we do with the power we fought for during the liberation struggle for independence against colonialism and apartheid? Mahmood Mamdani, the scholar who dissected the Rwandan genocide, gave us the warning long ago. He showed how African native societies that once bled under colonial oppression can, once they hold power, turn their pain and anger sideways, not at the systems that failed them, as was the case with European settler colonialism and apartheid rule, but at the neighbour and the foreigner, the ones who have no power to answer back. That is what is happening now. And it is not just violence; it is betrayal. **Ubuntu, the African way of life** At the core of this betrayal is the abandonment of Ubuntu. Ubuntu is not just a word. It is the African way of life “I am because we are.” It means your humanity is bound to mine. It means we recognise each other’s dignity, respect each other’s rights, and carry each other’s burdens, as the saying goes in Oshiwambo, “Dhoyendji ihadhi ehama okulila, meaning give each other a shoulder to cry on. Ubuntu is what made Africans open their doors to South African refugees during apartheid’s prosecutorial, exploitative, and dehumanising rule. It is what made strangers into family when the state turned its back. To attack a foreigner in your land is not only to reject them, but to project self-hate as Africans. They have rejected Ubuntu, the core foundation of humanity’s coexistence in harmony with one another. To deny someone’s humanity because of their passport is to risk denying themselves the right to existence both inside and outside their homeland in times of need. **The hand that fed you** What is being done to fellow Africans in South Africa is like a person biting the hand that once fed him, or biting the hand that is feeding you and might feed you again. It is like burning the house that once sheltered you and may have to shelter you again. During apartheid, South Africans knew what it meant to be foreign. They crossed borders with nothing but fear and hope. African countries opened their doors, fed them, and trained them to fight their oppressors. They risked their own safety because Ubuntu obliged them to show humanity to fellow human beings. Today, the roles have flipped. And instead of remembering, too many have chosen to forget. Instead of gratitude, there is rage. Instead of protection, there is fire. The Bible says it plainly in Leviticus 19:33–34: do not mistreat foreigners residing among you in your land, because you were once foreigners in another man’s land. Namibia says it in Oshiwambo, and it cuts deeper than most realise: “Shalya Nyoko yamukweni inashi kuta.” It means that if your mother dies and my mother raises you, I must not mistreat you for staying in my house. I must not take you for granted. Because my mother is not immune to death, and I too may end up raised in another’s house, far from my own. This conventional wisdom is both caution and conscience – a warning to treat the stranger well, because circumstances are not permanent but can change. Today you host, tomorrow you flee. Today you have a home, tomorrow you need one. South Africans learned this truth when they ran from apartheid’s atrocities and exploitation. They were taken in by other Africans, by other houses. To forget that now is not just cruel. It is to spit on the very Ubuntu spirit that saved them across African countries. **The broken promise** The call for South Africa is not just about moral obligation. It is about power and human rights. A government rules by public consent. The people agree to be governed in a constitutional democracy because they expect protection, justice, and dignity in return. That was the promise of 1994, and it is the promise Namibia made at independence. Human rights are not negotiable. In fact, another person’s rights are not yours to dispossess, and they do not stop at the border. When jobs vanish, when clinics have no medicine, and when corruption eats the budget, that public consent begins to break. Leaders should be held accountable for failing the state. The sad reality is that failed leaders do not step aside. They survive through deflection. And deflection has a playbook. First, externalise the problem Blame colonialism. Blame apartheid. Blame the foreigner. Blame anything but the policy failure in front of you. Second, delay accountability. Say the problem is 35 years old, so today’s leaders cannot be blamed yet. Colonialism has been here for longer. Third, fragment the people through divide-and-rule tactics. Let the poor fight the poorer, victim fighting victim. Let the unemployed turn on the immigrant. While they fight each other, no one is looking at the leaders who broke the promise to provide and defend the public good they promised during elections and after securing a two-thirds majority rule in parliament. The point is that words from failed politicians do not create jobs. They do not fix hospitals. They do not stop the looting. But those words do change the target of your anger to people who have nothing to do with the fundamental problem. **Perpetrators in suits** Let us call it what it is. A leader who fails to govern and then points people toward the foreigner is not innocent. They are perpetrators of violence without ever pulling a trigger. They protect their careers and privileges at the expense of the public they swore to serve and the human rights they swore to uphold. Failed politicians know that organised anger aimed upward, at them, can remove them from political office and disrupt their privileges. But scattered violence aimed downward often strengthens their position, because it diverts public attention from the real issues. Politicians chant political slogans such as “we need strong leadership. Give us a two-thirds majority rule, so we can do it better.” But the ultimate goal is to consolidate their power. People are falling into these traps, because people are tired and afraid; they cling to the very hands that let them fall. Namibia is not immune. We too invoked colonialism and apartheid to claim legitimacy after independence. But decades later, when inclusivity and prosperity still lag behind, the same language of scapegoating becomes a shield for failing politicians. The sad reality is that if power is now in our hands in a constitutional democracy, the question must be asked: why is constitutional democracy not working for everyone? Why are human rights being denied to those who stand at our gates? **The choice** The struggle has shifted. It is no longer “fight for inclusion.” We are all included in a constitutional democratic rule, unlike in colonialism and apartheid. The struggle for independence was legitimate because exclusion was perpetrated by the racial apartheid state and its laws. Today the struggle pattern has shifted to black political elites who perpetuate exclusion and exploitation in the post-apartheid era. The struggle now is: hold power accountable now that we are included. Mob violence against foreigners erases that shift. It spends the energy of the people on those who have no control over budgets, policy, or governance. It lets the real decision-makers walk away clean, as if they have no hand in a failing government. South Africa and Namibia share more than borders. We share a history of being crushed and a history of rising. We share Ubuntu: the belief that my humanity is tied to yours, that respect for human rights is not optional, and that dignity is not reserved for citizens alone. Ubuntu is not a slogan. It is a test. Leviticus is not an old book. It is a mirror. And “Shalya Nyoko yamukweni inashi kuta” is not folklore. It is foresight, born from knowing that no one is safe from needing shelter. Liberation movements become perpetrators the moment they let deflection replace delivery, the moment they betray the consent of the people or the moment they trade Ubuntu for scapegoats. So here is the question for both nations: will we keep aiming our anger downward, at the ones who have nothing to lose? Or will we turn it upward, at the ones who promised us everything and delivered too little? Humanity and the rule of law must take centre stage again. Not slogans. Not scapegoats. But the simple, stubborn belief that how we treat foreigners reveals who we are and who we are cannot be people who bite the hand that once fed them, who forget the house that once sheltered them, or who abandon the Ubuntu that makes them human.

AdvancedShelLM: A Stateful Multi-Agent LLM Honeypot for SSH Deception
LLM-based SSH honeypots can generate believable interactions, but evaluations indicate they remain somewhat identifiable to determined attackers, indicating the need for a better scaffolding. We present a new LLM-based honeypot design that uses a multi-agent, multi-LLM architecture to address the limitations of the previous shelLM LLM honeypot. Our honeypot, called AdvancedShelLM, uses two LLM agents, a Manager and a Worker, that better understand the commands while reducing incorrect responses and increasing deception. It implements an advanced permanent filesystem, allowing many simultaneous attackers to see the same changing files for the first time. It was evaluated with: (i) unit tests for generative capabilities, (ii) an AI attacker (ARACNE) to assess realism and deception, (iii) human attackers to assess its deceptive capability, and (iv) an Internet deployment to evaluate deception in real-world attacks. In unit test results, AdvancedShelLM achieved a pass rate of up to 99.02%. The AI attacker ARACNE had issues making a decision if the system is honeypot or not, but showed slight bias towards saying honeypot, even for a real Ubuntu shell. With human attackers, AdvancedShelLM deceived more humans than Cowrie, but had similar results as shelLM. The Internet deployment showed concrete evidence that the output of AdvancedShelLM can influence the behaviour of real-life attackers.

Prosto i sprawnie. Możesz też wyeksportować wynik do formatu PDF: tesseract plik.jpg wynik -l pol pdf ## gImageReader – graficzny interfejs dla Tesseract Jeśli wiersz poleceń nie jest Twoim ulubionym miejscem pracy, **gImageReader** to graficzna nakładka na Tesseract, którą obsługujesz myszką. Obsługuje pliki JPG, PNG, TIFF, BMP, PDF i wiele innych formatów. Jeśli masz fizyczny skaner podłączony do komputera, to właśnie gscan2pdf pozwoli Ci zeskanować dokument i od razu rozpoznać tekst – wszystko w jednym oknie. Obsługuje formaty PDF, DJVU, TIFF i wiele innych. 🚀 Chcesz opanować więcej ukrytych funkcji i rozwiązać inne cyfrowe problemy?
