The shop is open when I arrive; the shopkeeper and her colleague are getting earlier. I open the box and carry the papers in; the shopkeeper carries a bundle. The scissors seem to be getting blunter. The shopkeeper wishes me luck with the lottery.

Early stroll. In my mind’s eye I see the Romans who walked round here. A passing plane’s distant spark. I sneeze; the cockerel replies. The hill dreams of being a mountain. That well-stocked library of fallen leaves.

In the bus station I gave a bloke directions to the market. He walked away and then came back and said ‘Are you Ian McMillan? Not often you get directions from a poet!’ We laughed and went our separate ways.

At the shop I wait to open the lid of the box because it’s drizzling. The shopkeeper arrives and I get the papers out and carry them in. The aubade of the rising shutters. I collect my £1 lottery winnings; I drop the coin and it rolls a short distance.

Early stroll. A fallen leaf’s soft shadow. The moon is somewhere behind this drizzle. A PUBLIC FOOTPATH sign points to darkness. Green lights garland that old tree. A black cat in an upstairs window.

As I get the papers out of the box I am suddenly illuminated by the shop light. I carry the papers in. A man comes in, buys two big bottles of cider and says ‘They’re not for today’. Doug arrives and we talk about the big fish his son caught. Someone walks by, coughing.

Early stroll. Stars tell their ancient stories. Shall I count all these fallen leaves? Maybe tomorrow. The waiting lad with the bag waits with his bag. Morning peeps through a broken bus shelter roof. The shining currency of streetlights.

Early stroll. Fallen leaves as autumn’s calling cards. Sometimes time moves as quickly as that cat. Sometimes time moves as slowly as the moon. An owl’s psalm. A dropped doughnut outside the dentist’s.

Early stroll. The moon, outshining the stars. A tree’s shadow on the cemetery fence. Two orange balls on a lawn. A cyclist almost rides into me, shouts ‘Sorry pal!’ A sign says THIS ROAD WILL BE CLOSED; it doesn’t say when.

Early stroll. The watchful moon. Leathery fallen leaves. I’m ten minutes late so the road is busier. Time never hesitates, but sometimes it seems to. A silent man silently walks a silent dog.
