1/ russia murdered Yevhen Konovalets in Rotterdam in 1938. But killing him wasn't enough. Declassified Ukrainian intelligence archives reveal how, decades later, the KGB was still trying to disrupt commemorations of Konovalets and erase his legacy.

After nearly nine decades in exile, Yevhen Konovalets is returning home. Colonel of the UPR Army, commander of the Sich Riflemen, founder of the OUN—he devoted his life to an independent Ukraine and was assassinated by a Soviet agent for it.

1/ July 27, 1976. Montreal Olympics. During a USSR–East Germany football match, Ukrainian Danylo Myhal ran onto the field wearing a vyshyvanka, waving a blue-and-yellow flag, and dancing the hopak. His message was simple: "Freedom for Ukraine!"

In 1985, President Ronald Reagan expressed solidarity with the Ukrainian people, honoring those who fought against both Nazi and Communist tyranny during WWII. He affirmed Ukraine's right to freedom and self-determination before independence was restored.

On July 14, 1471, Muscovy began destroying the independent Novgorod Republic. The Battle of the Shelon River left at least 12,000 Novgorodians dead. For centuries, Moscow has rebranded invasion as "unification" and conquest as "liberation."

1/ July 13, 1940: Ukrainian poet, dissident, and political prisoner Ivan Sokulskyi was born. He defended Ukrainian language and culture when doing so meant expulsion, prison, and persecution. In 1968, he publicly protested the USSR's russification and crackdown on Ukrainian intellectuals.

Ukraine’s new 2,000-hryvnia banknote honors two giants of Ukrainian culture. Beside Vasyl Stus is Alla Horska’s iconic “Boriviter” mosaic, created in Mariupol in 1967 and damaged by russian forces in 2022. On the left side features a bird from one of her final mosaics.

1/ July 10, 1934: the USSR formally established the GULAG administration, an empire of camps built on terror and forced labor. Millions were imprisoned, exiled, exploited, and killed. By the early 1950s, Ukrainians made up one-fifth of all Gulag prisoners.

1/ July 9, 1961: 50,000 people gathered in Winnipeg as Canadian PM John Diefenbaker unveiled the first monument to Taras Shevchenko overseas, funded by Ukrainian Canadians. Two hundred blue-and-yellow flags filled the square. Ukraine lived, even in exile.

After more than 70 years, Colonel Andriy Melnyk and his wife Sofia are finally home in Ukraine. A ceremony was held at the Uzhhorod border crossing to welcome back one of the leaders of the Ukrainian independence movement and his wife. Ukraine brings its heroes home.

1/ April 20, 1938: the USSR made russian mandatory in all schools in Soviet Ukraine. This wasn’t “education.” It was policy - russification by design. Language was weaponized to erase identity and manufacture the obedient “Soviet person.”

1/ March 10 — Ukraine's National Anthem Day "Ukraine Has Not Yet Perished" has a powerful history. Some claim the Polish anthem inspired it, but Pavlo Chubynsky wrote the lyrics in 1862 in Kyiv, long before that idea emerged.

1/ On January 29, 1918, near the Kruty railway station, several hundred Ukrainian students and cadets bravely fought against the advancing Moscow-Bolshevik army. Though vastly outnumbered, their sacrifice delayed the enemy, allowing Ukraine to secure the Brest Peace Treaty.

From Jan 1, 2025, russia moves to open deportations of Ukrainians in occupied territories. The so-called “special regime” ends Dec 31. After that: take russian citizenship or a residence permit. No alternatives. This is a new, explicit phase of persecution and forced russification.
