For surprises and plenty of nightmare fuel, The Cabin in the Woods is the way to go. The twisty and terrifying horror comedy introduces a group of unsuspecting college kids, including Chris Hemsworth, who head to a remote cabin for a fun weekend. The first half hour or so is relatively calm, but when the horror show starts, it doesn't let up.  Source link

Ministers have stripped the government’s road-building agency of responsibility for a £10bn tunnel under the River Thames amid a drive by Keir Starmer’s cabinet to take tight control over important infrastructure projects for fear of cost overruns and delays. Oversight of the Lower Thames Crossing – the UK’s largest planned infrastructure project – has been taken away from National Highways and handed to the Department for Transport (DfT). The USDe synthetic dollar depegged on the Binance crypto exchange due to an internal oracle issue and not because of the underlying collateral, the Ethena protocol, or the token itself, according to Guy Young, the founder of Ethena Labs, the creator of USDe. USDe minting and redeeming worked “perfectly” during Friday’s flash crash, he claimed; $2 billion in USDe was redeemed during 24 hours across crypto exchanges, including Curve, Fluid, and Uniswap, with minimal price deviations of 30 basis points (BPS) or less, Young said. The price of USDe fell from about $1 to $0.65 on Binance during the crash because the exchange was using oracle data from its own orderbook, which had thinner liquidity, rather than an external price feed, Young said.

I have spent a bit of time fixing a HP1345A digital vector display, including reverse-engineering, just for the heck of it, its character generator. It’s odd to call a folding phone old school, but it seems fitting for the Google Pixel 10 Pro Fold. It’s not thin and light, and Google made no attempt to emulate the impressive foldables we’ve seen overseas or even the Galaxy Z Fold 7. Like the rest of the Pixel 10 lineup, Google takes a different approach, adding value in ways others don’t. Source link

On the 16th of October, 1843, the legendary Irish scientist and mathematician Sir William Rowan Hamilton went on a walk with his wife. As he walked along the banks of the Royal Canal, he had a famous eureka moment. Hamilton had been working on the problem of representing the rotations of three-dimensional objects for years. In a flash of insight, he discovered the formula for the algebraic system of quaternions, and so as not to forget, carved it into Brougham Bridge with his pocket knife: i² = j² = k² = ijk = -1.

President Donald Trump has called on Congress and other relevant authorities to investigate what led to his first impeachment. In a post on Truth Social Sunday, Trump specifically called for Democratic California Rep. Adam Schiff to be investigated and said that a number of laws and protocols were violated relating to his impeachment. “The Ukraine Impeachment (of me!) Scam was a far bigger Illegal Hoax than Watergate. I sincerely hope the necessary authorities, including CONGRESS, are looking into this! Adam ‘Schiffty’ Schiff was sooo dishonest and corrupt. So many laws, and protocols, were violated, and just plain broken!!!

A small but significant victory for OpenAI: the court order requiring the company to preserve all of its ChatGPT data indefinitely has been lifted. The original May 13 order — which OpenAI vehemently opposed — stemmed from an ongoing lawsuit filed by the New York Times in 2023. The paper alleges that OpenAI trained its AI models on Times content without proper authorization or compensation. The NYT is one of several news publishers currently suing OpenAI and Microsoft for copyright infringement, including The Intercept, Alternet, and Mashable's own parent company, ZiffDavis.

James Franklin is out at Penn State. The school fired their longtime head coach on Sunday, less than 24 hours after a 22-21 home loss to Northwestern all but ended whatever remote chance the preseason No 2 team had of reaching the College Football Playoff. Terry Smith will serve as the interim head coach for the rest of the season for the Nittany Lions (3-3, 0-3 Big Ten), who began the year with hopes of winning the national title only to have those hopes evaporate by early October amid a string of losses, each one more stinging than the last.

LOS ANGELES -- LOS ANGELES (AP) — “Tron: Ares” powered up the box office grid in the top spot this weekend, but Disney’s third entry in the sci-fi franchise fell short of expectations. Despite some favorable reviews — including a three-out-of-four-star one from The Associated Press — the new “Tron” film starring Jared Leto, Greta Lee and Jeff Bridges earned $33.5 million, according to Comscore estimates on Sunday. The big-budget project, reported to cost around $150 million, arrived 15 years after “Tron: Legacy” opened to $44 million before grossing more than $400 million globally.

Opinion by: Hedy Wang, co-founder and CEO at Block Street Equity markets are still running on outdated rails — batch files, email reconciliations and sluggish collateral transfers that crawl between custodians through workflows that no one fully controls.  If the industry wants to maintain credibility, it can no longer tolerate this. The answer is not another incremental patch or painful niche option. It’s a step up to onchain equity lending. Real-time settlement, programmable collateral and transparent rule enforcement will become the benchmark others must meet. Equities are dependent on elements like certainty and speed.

Nielsen Norman Group on iOS 26 usability October 12, 2025 On Friday, Raluca Budiu posted “Liquid Glass Is Cracked, and Usability Suffers in iOS 26” to the Nielsen Norman Group site. If the name isn’t familiar to you, the Nielsen Norman Group are UI/UX specialists who’ve been commenting insightfully about design since the late-90s. The piece on Liquid Glass is scathing, and excellently summarizes many of my frustrations. Overall, Apple is prioritizing spectacle over usability, lending credibility to the theory that Liquid Glass is an attempt to distract customers from iOS 26’s lack of long-promised AI features.

Joe Maring / Android Authority YouTube Music is great, but Deezer is better. The French music streaming service is highly underrated in my opinion and deserves a lot more attention. However, despite my love for Deezer, there are issues holding it back, with one of them being a dealbreaker for me. I can’t justify switching over to it from YouTube Music, but I still think it’s a great option for certain users in the US. SAN ANTONIO, Texas — As the Schumer shutdown moves through its second week, health care providers are not being compensated for services provided to military service members and their families. Some doctors and health care providers in San Antonio who rely on TRICARE to pay for services provided to military members and dependents say they are now starting to feel the pinch. The Democrats’ stated priority of extending federal subsidies related to Obamacare coverage may now be endangering the health care services for United States military service members, retirees, and their dependents.

Elegance has always been part of Jennifer Lopez's aesthetic, but she seems particularly determined to establish herself as our main source of inspiration for work-related dressing. Over the past few weeks, the "On the Floor" singer has been seen in various styles of blazers, which she has paired with vests, wide-leg pants, as well as pencil skirts. Her penchant for this style only denotes what the Saint Laurent, Gucci, and Ferragamo runways predicted: executive formality will be the key to looking elegant this fall. The return of ‘80s power dressing that began last year has had time to evolve, and without a doubt, the 56-year-old actor shos us the most modern and sensual versions of the ensemble.

Maybe there's a reason that teams other than the Eagles don't run the tush push. The Baltimore Ravens tried it twice at the goal line Sunday against the Los Angeles Rams. They got stuffed both times and are lucky that they didn't turn the ball over for a Rams defensive touchdown. Advertisement The Ravens employed the tush push late in the second quarter with the game tied at 3-3. They faced second-and-goal from inside the 1-yard line after a 3-yard run on first down by Derrick Henry. But they didn't give the ball right back to one of the game's most dangerous goal-line runners.

For 14 years, Donnie Wahlberg starred as Detective Danny Reagan on the CBS police procedural "Blue Bloods." The hit drama about the Reagans, the fictional first family of the New York Police Department, had a loyal following. Now 56, Wahlberg is sitting at a new family's dinner table, in "Boston Blue," a "Blue Bloods" spinoff set in a city the actor knows well.

I've been using Helix as my editor to develop on remote servers for quite some time now. There are a lot of emerging supply-chain attacks, and I simply don't like the idea of installing tens of plugins to Vim/Neovim to make the editor usable. To make the switch from Neovim easier, I had to make some changes to the configuration. I want to share them to save you some time, because discovering them is not straightforward. Tmux setup I use tmux as a terminal multiplexer. One thing that I miss from Neovim setup is a good file manager and TUI for git.

Spooky season is upon us, and traditional horror films like Bring Her Back (excellently gruesome) or The Evil Dead (stone cold classic) are obvious choices for a cozy movie night at home. But, if you’re looking for something that’s a bit more weird than wicked to get you in the Halloween spirit, I highly recommend the 1977 fantasy horror film House. Describing House is an exercise in futility. Here’s the basic plot: A girl goes to spend the summer with her aunt after her widower father brings home a creepily sedate woman and declares that he intends to marry her.

The newly identified reptile is about the size of a dolphin. A skeleton found on Britain's Jurassic Coast has been identified as a new species of ichthyosaur, a type of prehistoric marine reptile that once ruled the seas, scientists said Friday. It is "the only known example of its kind in existence and helps to fill an important gap in the evolutionary fossil record of…

Tucked away in Steveston’s quiet fishing village, the Gulf of Georgia Cannery is a pristine time capsule of Canada’s fish-canning heyday, where polished old machinery sits still and real fish scales—stuck to the walls from years of salmon and herring chaos—add a quirky touch of the sea. The staff lead a stellar tour, packed with oddball tales of the Chinese, Indigenous, and other workers who tackled slimy fish piles from 1894 to 1979, while a short video in a former boiler room dishes the cannery’s wild past. Visitors can try shoveling plastic fish into bins to feel the sweaty hustle of yesteryear or gawk at dusty cans lining the shelves.

FRISCO, Texas -- Of the unrestricted free agents the Dallas Cowboys signed during the offseason, there is no question Javonte Williams has been their best. After five games, he is third in the NFL with 447 rushing yards and tied for second with five rushing touchdowns on 79 carries. He has also caught 17 passes for 78 yards and a touchdown. While quarterback Dak Prescott is the Cowboys' most valuable and most important player, Williams' play is a big reason why the Cowboys (2-2-1) have such a productive offense. He is on a one-year contract that could pay him up to $3.5 million.

This month, indie musicians in San Francisco gathered for a series of talks called Death to Spotify, where attenders explored “what it means to decentralize music discovery, production and listening from capitalist economies”. The events, held at Bathers library, featured speakers from indie station KEXP, labels Cherub Dream Records and Dandy Boy Records, and DJ collectives No Bias and Amor Digital. What began as a small run of talks quickly sold out and drew international interest. People as far away as Barcelona and Bengaluru emailed the organizers asking how to host similar events.

Like clockwork, Apple introduced a new set of iPhones this September. But the highlight of the "Awe Dropping" keynote for me wasn't the new iPhone 17 lineup or even the Apple Watch Series 11. It was the new AirPods Pro 3. As an Android user for the past few years, I've always been a bit envious of how seamlessly the AirPods work within the Apple ecosystem. You can effortlessly switch between devices, enjoy that sleek connection animation every time you open the case, and experience some of the best active noise cancellation on any earbuds.

Argentina's economy is spiraling. NPR's Scott Simon speaks with economist Monica de Bolle about the Trump administration's plan to rescue it. SCOTT SIMON, HOST: The Trump administration is throwing an economic lifeline to Argentina. Last month, President Javier Milei's party lost crucial provincial elections. In turn, Argentina's currency plunged, and stock prices plummeted. This has jeopardized reforms that Milei, an ideological ally of President Trump, has undertaken to try to balance Argentina's budget and tame its triple-digit inflation. This week, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent formalized an agreement to loan $20 billion to Argentina, writing that the United States is, quote, "prepared, immediately, to take whatever exceptional measures are warranted to provide stability." Monica de Bolle is an economist with the Peterson Institute for International Economics who specializes in Latin America and joins us now.

The growth of a pre-Inca civilization known as the Wari may have been aided by psychedelic-laced beer, researchers propose in a new study. The Wari flourished from roughly A.D. 600 to 1000 and are known for their mummified burials, human sacrifices, and elaborate objects created out of gold, silver and bronze. They also built cities such as Huari and Pikillaqta, which contained temples and dwellings for elite inhabitants, and controlled much of Peru as well as parts of Argentina and Chile.
