Photo-edited version of screenshot from the classic Black Mirror episode 1 'The National Anthem'. Metallica: Master of Puppets.
An overgrown graveyard full of white crosses in regiments like little soldiers, one with a soldier's helmet hanging off it, with puppet master strings rising up from the crosses into a warlike red sky with the Metallical logo looming. It is very very Masters of War but make it Metal, which I guess is not political or something

All that train usage has led to exactly what businesses want: a surge in foot traffic. A live chart showing pedestrian movements around the city centre shows above-average numbers across almost every site monitored since the CRL opened on September 13.

[my highlight] That chart is available on the website for Heart of the City, an organisation created to advocate for inner-city businesses; it turned down the opportunity to comment for this story.

Honestly, the full quote is much more qualified but makes very little sense???
He was asked who he would vote for if he couldn't vote for the Opportunity Party. “Maybe the National Party,” Eb said.

Asked why, Eb responded that he used to vote for them.

"I used to vote for them a lot of the time when I was a younger person, and then I changed a little bit and started voting for other parties.

"I voted for the Green Party before; I almost voted for the Te Pāti Māori party before. So I'd probably just go back to what I used to do, which is not a good reason to do anything,” Eb said.

From my review of The Life and Opinions of Kartik Popat for the NZ Review of Books: www.nzreviewofbooks.com/the-life-and-opinions-of-kartik-popat-by-brannavan-gnanalingam/

"I have a number of life-crossovers with Gnanalingam himself, and reading this novel gave me the feeling that Popat has dogged my own steps for decades. He is there at the 2004 protest against the National Front in Wellington for which I was the ethnic community organiser. He is there offstage riding out the Dirty Politics scandal while my friends were being quoted in Nicky Hager’s book and ensuing coverage. He puts up the petition about the Global Migration Compact later taken down by the National Party’s ‘emotional junior staffer’ we all shitposted about on Twitter, after reference to the Compact is found scrawled on the Christchurch shooter’s gun. He is in London brushing up on dead-cat Topham Guerin tactics and waxing cynical about the Grenfell fire, which I wrote about while working there for a human rights NGO."

Yui from K-ON emerges excitedly from a marae (a Māori meeting house, the heart of a traditional community) wearing a classic white-collared All Blacks shirt (from the era that the All Blacks were always the best), a black bucket hat with a silver fern on it (could apply to most national sports teams, not just the All Blacks, such as the netball team the Silver Ferns, which has also had moments in history of being the best), brandishing a Speights in one hand and a Big Ben Steak & Cheese pie in the other, which are national symbols of celebration of when NZ is mentioned.

There are plenty of questions hanging over today’s book, not least of which is what it is actually about. Will it be more accurate than Hit and Run? is an obvious one.

But the one everyone wants to know is whether it will have an impact on the election. Ultimately, Dirty Politics did not. Much of that campaign was whether you trusted John Key or Nicky Hager (or David Cunliffe, or Kim Dotcom ... the list goes on). Ultimately, voters stuck with Key, a man they liked and seemed to trust.

If there’s one thing the last three years have taught us about Christopher Luxon it is that he’s no John Key. On Monday, Luxon said he doesn’t know who Hager is.

He’s about to find out.

Sometimes I'm in a pleasant and cosy frame of mind, and I look back at something I wrote and go daaaamn I was not fucking around hahahaha
"“Asians” do not always have a shared ethnic history, language, religion, tradition or migration cohort. Oft-times, our homelands have been or are still at war with each other, even as others cannot tell us apart in the suburbs of Auckland. But more often, we do have a common history or experience of migration, arrival, settlement and daily life that has been governed by a racial and colonial logic marking us out for a clear purpose, which I will state bluntly: To return an advantage to colonial capital through replacing more expensive and better-organised labour."

For Hong Kong New Zealanders, CLW echoed the Mandarin education programme that is being forced on Hong Kong. There, it is an attempt to displace Cantonese and erase local identity, replacing it with a single ‘Chinese’ identity prescribed by the CCP. It is designed as a programme of imperialism and colonisation.

It was so beautiful, so pure, the perfect research methods piece and somehow completely ignored by Keir Starmer even though it explained exactly how he shot himself in the dick with his own gun.
The timing of this highly salient event during ongoing fieldwork for the British Election Study (Fieldhouse et al., 2025) enables us to leverage an ‘unexpected event during survey design’ (UESD) identification strategy (Munoz et al.,2020) to identify the causal effects of exposure to Labour’s
rhetorical shift. By exploiting both the as-good-as-random variation in survey timing and a panel data framework, we estimate within-individual
changes in immigration attitudes, party perceptions, and vote intentions attributable to treatment. **Our identification strategy thus offers a rare combination of internal and external validity: exogenous assignment to a real-world treatment in a large-N survey.** [yeah baby]
Our analysis proceeds in three steps. First, we show that Starmer’s speech caused a sharp increase in the salience of immigration, evidenced by increased media reporting as well as spikes in internet search activity and online political discussion. Second, we demonstrate that exposure to the speech caused voters to update their perceptions of
the UK Labour Party, identifying the social democratic party as more anti-immigration and right-leaning. This re-evaluation of the party’s position, however, coincided with more negative assessments of the party’s handling of the issue alongside a spike in the overall assessment of immigration as the most important issue of the day. Rather than neutralising the issue, Labour’s accommodation made it more salient. Finally, we demonstrate that Labour’s shift right-ward on immigration provided zero electoral rewards. Instead, we find robust evidence that treatment induced within-individual declines in Labour support across several measures. On average, treatment decreased voting intentions for Labour by 1.2 percentage-points (p<0.05) and resulted in a
3.9 percentage-point (p<0.05) haemorrhage in support from Labour’s
own former voters without attracting any new supporters.

Not only are they failing to asking survivors if the abuse has decreased (i.e. measuring the actual intended outcome), the cheap option of former perpetrators taking over courses from qualified practitioners seems to be giving abusers a cosy mens' group rather than changing behaviour.
An unlikely consensus

This is probably the part of the story where you’re thinking programme providers will righteously defend their own work.

That’s what I thought, too, when I rang Merran Lawler, chief executive officer of Te Kupenga Whakaoti Mahi Patunga, the National Network of Family Violence Services.

She found The Backbone Collective report “depressing reading, but also completely unsurprising”.

There’s a reason she’s not defensive.
A room where one of the hundreds of stopping-violence programmes held around New Zealand takes place.
A room where one of the hundreds of stopping-violence programmes held around New Zealand takes place. Photo: RICKY WILSON

“At one level the report could be read as attacking the credibility and the viability of stopping violence services and programmes,” she says, “but it’s far more nuanced than that.”

She cites a key date: 2014, the year Programme Approval Panels were abolished. Made up of victim-survivor advocates, alongside organisations and experts in stopping violence, their job was to approve programme design and content.

Their abolition was a philosophical decision, Lawler says, and a financial one. “To get the cheapest possible services from a wider range of providers.

“It’s fair to say that it has resulted in the dumbing down of the sector. The safeguards were much better at the turn of the century than they are today."Lawler argues there is now less focus on qualified facilitators, and more on lived-experience practitioners – people who formerly perpetrated violence.

“Groups of guys getting together and being able to share what’s happening for them, and removing any of the discomfort that necessarily goes with any type of behavioural change.”

And too often without their victims being asked if their abuser’s behaviour has actually changed at all.

@brooklynmarie.bsky.social's Global Far Right Power Grab meme, a keeper for all seasons:

Four panel "cosmic brain" meme with the following captions:

Normal brain: it's a global far right power grab

Genius brain: Aligned corrupt entities in each nation-state are collaborating in order to consolidate resources and power

Galaxy brain: State and non-state actors are using hybrid warfare techniques on the public at large to leveraging climate crises into gardening borders and demonizing immigrants for their own gain

Cosmic brain: It's a global far right power grab

We are headed for the shittiest possible part of the J-curve because that's where you go when the driving motivation is cost-cutting, not improvement in service and systems. Research facts! This is general tech-adoption theory, not even taking into account how fucked AI is for so many other reasons
(David Viney) productivity J-curve after new technology introduction
'What stakeholders mistakenly expect' is immediate improvement
'What is possible with sound change management' i.e.focus on systems improvement and training, is still productivity decline before improvement.
'What actually happens most of the time' is a v dramatic drop-off in productivity before improvement at some point in the future, who knows when. Research shows that this is especially so when the focus is cost-cutting and getting rid of workers.

Natasha Lyonne in Poker Face in the midst of a violent altercation with a pair of boomer sleepers for the Weatherish Underground, responding to their insult that she is a 'fucking Millennial'. Outraged, haggard, she speaks for us all when she declares "I'M A CUSPER YOU FUCKING PSYCHOS"
