Julio has got to stop having at bats like this. You get a hanging breaking ball over the middle, don’t swing. Then you chase way out of the zone on two changeups. He’s too talented to have completely uncompetitive plate appearances like this.

Cal’s pitch calling has gotten very suspect. Bazardo threw the same pitch in the same location four straight times to Langford. Makes absolutely no sense. How is this a good game plan?!

I really like this move. Provides clarity for Bryce and the rest of the starters, and makes the weakest part of the Mariners roster stronger.
Ryan Divish says that the Mariners have moved Bryce Miller to the bullpen.

Agree with this, but there’s also the fact that Hancock’s metrics are pretty mediocre, and I don’t have much faith he can keep this level of performance up long term. I think selling high in him while you can would be a wise move. Not much difference between him and Luis this season

My report on the Mariners 2nd round pick, Jake Brown (text in ALT again). The Ms seem pretty focused on left-handed bats with a college track record. Not a ton of upside here, but Brown has the skills to be a well-rounded hitter at the big league level. He should be a solid right fielder as well.
Hit: 50 | Plate Discipline: 45 | Game Power: 50 | Raw Power: 55 | Run: 55 | Arm: 60 | Field: 50

With a smooth left-handed swing and feel for the barrel, Brown has a real chance to become an impact hitter at the major league level. Brown can hit the ball to all fields, but his ability to loft the ball pull-side stands out the most. He has above average raw pop and got to it consistently throughout the 2026 season, though his aggressive approach can somewhat limit his power in games. Brown’s swing is compact, and his quick hands help him to make a copious amount of in-zone contact against fastballs in particular. Brown has struggled to hit left-handed pitching consistently, so he may only be a platoon outfielder in the long-term, which does cap his median projection somewhat. As long as he can continue to refine his approach and improve his performance against secondary offerings, like he has each year in college, he’ll have a chance to carve out a regular role for himself in the big leagues.

Defensively, Brown profiles best in right field, though he is capable of playing a passable center field. He has above average speed and plus arm strength with accuracy to match and looks like a quality defender in a corner spot. Brown doesn’t use his speed to steal many bases, and his baserunning in general leaves a little to be desired. Brown’s future outcome relies heavily on his bat, but it projects to be a good one at the next level and even the limitations that do exist in Brown’s profile aren’t enough to keep him from going in the 2nd round on draft day.

My writeup on the Mariners first round pick Ace Reese (text is in ALT as well). Incredible power to all-fields with plenty of feel to pull the ball in the air. There are some hit tool and approach concerns, in addition to the fact that he is most likely a 1B going forward. Still a solid pick!
36. Ace Reese 1B/3B, L/R (21) – Mississippi State

Hit: 45 | Plate Discipline: 45 | Game Power: 60 | Raw Power: 65 | Run: 45 | Arm: 50 | Field: 45

Still settling into a plate approach, the one thing that is for sure with Reese is that he will hit a lot of home runs. With easy plus raw power that he gets to in games, Reese has legitimate all fields power. He consistently drives the ball in the air, posts strong barrel rates, and has feel for hitting pull-side fly balls. His short, quick swing with natural loft helps him here, and he has adjustability in his bat path that allows him to get the barrel to different zone locations. All the ingredients for 30 homer seasons are here. He routinely stays inside the baseball and posts acceptable zone-contact rates for a player with his power, alleviating concerns that he’ll be an all-or-nothing type hitter at the next level.

What will need to improve, however, is his plate discipline. He too frequently chases pitches outside the strike zone, and while his approach was more patient in 2026, it led to Reese getting into deeper counts more regularly, causing his strikeout rate to tick up. Most of Reese’s whiffs come on pitches outside the zone, so learning how to stay within himself and hunt pitches in his damage zone will be key for him as he takes the step up to the pro ranks.

Defensively, Reese will slide over to first base at some point. His lateral range and overall quickness are below average at third base, and his footwork and fundamentals could use some work as well. Though he does have decent arm strength, he does not possess the speed to be an average defender in an outfield corner. To be sure, he’ll get playing time at all these positions in the minor leagues as a team tries to increase his defensive value, but first base will ultimately be his spot in the big leagues. Reese will have to really hit to be a regular contributor in the majors, but I believe he is more than capable of doing exactly that.

I'm just about finished with the baseball project that I've been working on since the winter. I wanted to see if there was any evidence that modern pitching development may be causing pitchers to decline sooner. While the evidence tells a mixed story, this bit is quite revealing.
Graph showing how pitcher fastball velocity is declining sooner now than it has in years past. Velo decline was much subtler into a pitcher's 30s just 10 years ago than it is now. Also reveals how modern pitching development may be effecting things as well.

Quite honestly, the Braves should have a lot more than 4 runs. Logan has gotten absolutely throttled tonight.

If an IL stint is necessary for Brash, my guess would be that Yosver Zulueta will get the call up from Tacoma. He has posted some very good rate stats so far in AAA (17.2% swinging strike rate) and he's also done a very good job limiting hard contact (.246 xSLG). prospectsavant.com/player/691172
Yosver Zulueta's Prospect Savant (statcast) page. He's posted some very good metrics in a small sample of Triple-A innings. 38% whiff, 29% chase, and 33% k rate.

Colt Emerson with a left-on-left tank tonight in Triple-A! The biggest (and perhaps last) box for him to check is improving his quality of contact against lefties. Another step towards the big leagues tonight for Colt!

Not necessarily a bad thing, but just an interesting thing I noticed with Cal. Looking at his Bat Tracking data, his swing tilt (i.e. steepness) is 5* higher so far this year than 2025. Steeper swings tend to struggle with the high fastball, which is something that is giving Cal trouble right now.
