Try buying a fisherman’s cottage in Wells or the Burnhams, it’s insane. And most of them sit empty for 50 weeks a year. Example: one bed terrace in Burnham Thorpe. Basically a two up two down.
£395,000 for a one bed terrace.

More of the front end taking a kicking.

The other end. They found more asbestos which gas involved some fairly careful work over the last six weeks.
A brutalist building with the windows ripped out, dissected by teams of blokes in boiler suits and masks. Sunny day.

Today’s outing was less successful, so here’s another from yesterday’s bountiful harvest of souls.
A tennis photograph in monochrome of a group of people being alive under a flyover.

I really like this one. There’s all these little tableaux in it, zoom in and have a gad about.
Same demolition, same flyover, different folk.

Today’s wander. It’s chewing its way along nicely.

A view under the flyover of the beast at rest. Kids from the local school under the bridge at Stump Cross, named after a wayside cross that stood here until the 16th century.
The head of the nipper at rest under the bridge. With kids in the foreground mucking about, as kids have probably done since the 10th century.

This one is shot looking across the opened heart of a medieval graveyard, towards a building called Gildengate, named after a jousting ground which is nearby.
A single arm ripping at a large brutalist block. Hard silhouette.

I took some peripheral photos of the current state of the world around the Anglia Square demolition. And it happening as well. It’s still fascinating, all the shapes and lines and alignments of a slowly degrading piece of city opening up and showing a bare layered soul as the world walks by.
The arm of one beast through the arm of another. Very black and white. I’m posting these here because Instagram is so utterly fucking pointless for photographers.

Percy, my mums dad died in the Battle of Messines, three years later. Quite bizarrely his death appeared in the Cambridge Weekly News on the day before her third birthday. It’s like a tragedy magnet.
Cpl Percy James Parr.

Here’s a newspaper article from 29th of August 1914. I only found it today. It’s a story I had a skeleton of knowledge about, but is tragic and horrific in ways I wasn’t actually expecting.

A printed label with a 404 message on it. And some Bougatsa, which for the initiated is a sort of set custard pastry much loved by the Greeks and me and I don’t even like cakes.

I did that thing where you half recognise someone, we both nodded at each other and smiled, swapped an awkward ‘alright’ as you do. His arm was in a sling. It was Richey. So that’s my very vague brush with a bit of music history. And here’s all the bits of paper including the rider. Strange times.
More tatty paper and my very safe archival system, a brown envelope. These are on the back Hall of Nothing headed paper, who were their management.

It was rare I’d bother picking up a set list. If I did I usually gave it away. One night I did and kept it, not sure why really. Manic Street Preachers had played. Here it is.
A rather scabby looking set list in biro.

A really rather beautiful ghost sign just popped up on Magdalen Street, thus confirming its position as the best street in the city again for yet another year. Early c20th painted and gold foiled glass. Seems it was covered over in the 1960s. It’s been a Chinese chemist for years.
The ladies & gents hairdressers sign on the Golden Dog Lane exposure, which is pretty much intact. The frontage, the glass is cracked in the middle, but still readable and in decent condition. It reads 32 - Hairdressers - George Clapham - Perfumers, in gold leaf on green.Perfumers - 3232 Hairdressers.

Due to a thing I'm doing I just remembered having one of these sets. Ideal for making unwieldly cufflinks, or making a huge dead wasp pendent for your nan.
A plasticraft set. One of those really toxic pointless things you got for christmas in the 1970s where you could bury things in clear plastic not realising you were an agent of the anthropocene plastic amber fossil record.

Anyway. I wrote about it. And by some weird twist of fate Mike Cole’s read it and emailed me to tell me about how he’d been visiting friends in Norwich, and hungover on his way to get some milk, spotted the arches which reminded him off De Chirico, so he took a photo.

Here’s a story I’ve told elsewhere. From the age of about 15, one of the greatest loves of my life was Killing Joke, I bought everything they did, went and saw them, bought the t-shirt, painted the first album on the back of my cheap leather jacket. Loved them. Especially their, 1981 second album
The sleeve of What’s this for by killing joke, it’s a montage colourised.

Also have a few 1/35th First World War unmade, and loathe to get rid of, especially the Big Bertha. The more recent kits are astonishing. I kept all my FWW made tanks too. Especially this slightly rough old fave.

Addenda: after I did this thread I revived an email from Paul Carter who I’d contacted about the Hakodate Camp photo. He’d attached a better scan. So here’s Alf in 1944. The photos were taken by order of the camp commander, and print for each man. Quite remarkable. Paul’s father is in the same photo

The only evidential stuff is a photo of him in Hakodate which is near Haikido. We know while he was there he broke his arm, if you can spot him, his arm is in a sling. My mum also said he was beaten.

His half-brother Tom (Parr) had already joined the Royal Artillery. My mum was by this point a midwife in London, but also pregnant, and his other brother-in-law, my dad was already in the RAF, he’d joined in 1932. Here are these side-cast members. Tom on the left, and Grace and Charlie.

Then the War came. A shadow growing across Europe and spreading over Asia. He joined up in March 1940, the 5th Suffolks, a territorial battalion, part of the East Anglian division. Here he is in a studio portrait. 20 years old, and that collar looks way too big for him.

A story. This is my Uncle Alf, my mum’s half brother. Her dad died in the Great War, my Nan remarried in 1920, another veteran. Mum had one brother and two step-brothers. Alfred Leonard Ireton was born in December 1919, they married in January 2020, as you do, or did back then. Here’s Alf.
