#SouthShields MV Fitzcarraldo berthed at South Shields on this day 3rd October 2003. Built in Norway as a ferry it was later purchased by the Walk the Plank (theatre company) as a touring theatre ship. Sold in 2010 to Dutch owners who planned to turn it into a floating nightspot.

#Blaydon Morbid piece from the Northern Echo of 1st October 1880 concerning the discovery of a skeleton in Stargate Pit, Stella on this day 29th September 1880. The remains of a worker known as Rodham perished in an underground flood in 1823, found 57 years later.

#NewcastleUponTyne 'We are not amused' - Queen Victoria passed through Newcastle on this day 28th September 1849 and 'condescended' to receive an address from the town's officers. She did receive a 21 gun salute from the Castle though - Journal on this day 29th September 1849.
