🌊 Ambition for a Clean Tyne: Setting a New Standard for Our River & Coast Every time heavy rain hits raw sewage flows into our river. Cleaning up after the latest plastic pollution event shouldn't be where our ambition ends. Getting back to a polluted "baseline" isn't enough.

Beach Update: 8am worrying accumulation of plastic pellets has washed up along Longsands and many more on Fish Quay overnight. ⚠️ Please avoid stepping on affected sand to prevent pushing pellets deeper in. Cleanup teams are on-site working hard, but scale is bigger than seen for a while

❌ Frustrating news this morning: Funding 4 proposed Zebra Crossing outside Marden High on Hartington Road has been cancelled. I’ve already contacted the school, am incredibly sorry this has happened With gov announcing £5Billion for local active travel, people will rightly wonder how this fits🧵

News from Tynemouth Cllr Tom @tynemouth.news · 30/05/2026
The media often portrays road planning as a zero-sum "culture war": motorists vs. cyclists, or drivers vs. pedestrians. But that narrative misses the point entirely. Everyone benefits from a road that is safer, slower, and better managed, especially when it runs right past schools and neighborhoods

Preston Road: Finding a Way Forward (Part 2) 🚦🤝 What sort of place should Preston Road be? Part 2, on-site with local resident Fletcher Sowerby and local parent Prof. Alison Stenning to look at what happens when a community stops shouting and starts listening.

News from Tynemouth Cllr Tom @tynemouth.news · 30/05/2026
Instead of coming together to build a safer, more sustainable street, we became trapped in a classic "culture war" debate. Despite clear demand for slower, safer junctions, political division and heated rhetoric stalled progress entirely. While adults argued, our children paid the price.

Preston Road: Moving Beyond the Culture Wars 🚦🪧📢💥 Five years ago, a promise was made to the 800 children who travel to school on Preston Road: we would make their route safer. We as a community failed to deliver. #PrestonRoad #Tynemouth #RoadSafety #ActiveTravel #CommunityFirst

🚦 Moving Beyond the "Culture Wars" on Our Roads It’s easy to look at streets and pick a side, but the reality of transport is more complex than a headline or a social media argument. I’m opening up a conversation about how we actually keep #Tynemouth moving safely #RoadSafety #PrestonRoad #Transport

Last month saw the death of a local father, one of our neighbours riding his bike on Preston Road. My thoughts and condolences go to the family, friends & anyone impacted by this tragedy.

North Tyneside is a tight community. Although I didn’t know him myself, I’ve talked to many people that did, all have spoken incredibly highly of him.

As well as being a North Tyneside Councillor I both work in Transport and have campaigned on road safety for the last 20 years. I question whether I have done enough.

If there was anything that I failed to achieve as a Councillor that would have reduced the chance of this happening, then I am deeply sorry. If it helps anyone impacted to talk to me then I will make the time to do so.

Even when an individual collision results from criminality or recklessness, systemic issues around roads policing, traffic speed and junction design always play a part when things go tragically wrong. We as a community must accept responsibility for delivering a safer system of managing our streets, where fewer collisions occur and the consequences when things go wrong are less severe.

Part of the job of a Councillor is to show leadership as our community asks itself what choices are to be made and what change is needed, not only on Preston Road. John Spence School has the highest rate of children cycling to school in our borough, their Cllr needs to ensure they are looked after.

From next week I am going to begin to talk again about some of the choices we face. In doing this I will be staying away from talking directly about the circumstances of this collision. With police investigation still ongoing and things so raw this clearly wouldn’t yet be appropriate.

Delivering safer streets is never easy, no real improvement ever comes for free. The same problems can exist at multiple junctions and locations. Only by mobilising long term investment and pursuing consistently better approaches will we make a real difference.

A few words on the tragic loss last month of a local father riding his bike on Preston Road. We’re not at a point where it’s appropriate to comment on the circumstances of this collision, but it is time to get to work looking at the choices our community faces. Just awful. 😞

We’ve seen a dramatic fall in collisions and injuries along the coast, and we want to ensure our streets remain safe for every child and family in our community.  The speed we drive affects how and who we see. Now, we’re asking for your input to identify problem areas and find the right solutions

This is exactly why the slower speeds along our coast have led to such a dramatic drop in collisions and injuries. When we slow down, we don't just "drive safer"—we see more of the community we’re working to protect. #RoadSafety #CommunityFirst #SlowDown

🚦Ever wonder why we push so hard for lower speed on our local streets? Surprised by how dramatically collisions & injuries have fallen on the coast after the changes there? It’s all about vision 👁️ The faster people drive, the narrower their field of vision becomes.

In this instance something happened to the driver. But in a photo nothing shows up more despite all our campaigning this section of Preston Road is a mess. The 1960s fencing (safety hazard), the yellow paint, excess speeds. The kids in the background deserve better, they’ve told us they want better
011
News from Tynemouth Cllr Tom @tynemouth.news · 02/03/2026
Shocking scenes on Preston Road. This section of street is systematically unsafe, a relic of the 1960s design, doesn’t belong in our borough today. Guardrail crush risk, excess speed, & yet we’ve got Tory Cllrs over the road who think yellow paint on the road will solve anything 🤯🤷🏼 Enough is enough
