Oh! I see the problem. Good edge case for me to fix. I'll roll some code out ASAP but for now, if you open the dev tools, go to application, then the local storage for Sill, delete the filter preferences. It's caching your Mastodon filter, but now you don't have Mastodon. Then try a filter.

From the latest @garbageday.email. It's the feeds, stupid! There isn't a single social network on earth that has solved the "people don't click" problem. Clicking a link is interrupting your feed. Why would you? www.garbageday.email/p/safe-and-c...
The first issue is that Bluesky is just as inhospitable to outside links as X is, even without an algorithmic For You feed. Its users just don’t click on anything. It’s a cultural problem with no real fix. Regardless of what kind of publisher or creator we’re talking about, no one I’ve met is getting any meaningful traffic from Bluesky. (If you are, I’d love to hear about it!)

Log into @sill.social and get your reduced scopes! (the "Manage your profile..." line is due to needing to specify XRPC scopes. Everything Sill can access in the bsky lexicon space is actually read-only.)

- Read your account's email address
- Manage your profile, posts, likes and follows
- View Bluesky network content from account perspective, and real all notifications and preferences.
- View, create, edit, and delete the account's saved bookmarks.

Yeah I'm trying to avoid explicitly specifying all the XRPC endpoints because in my case (a read-only app) the resulting consent screen doesn't communicate what I'm doing well. The permission set (authViewAll, screenshotted below) does.
The PDS consent screen with Bluesky's authViewAll permission set. It says: Read-only access to all content.

Permission sets for bsky launched sometime early this year (and still have issues github.com/bluesky-soci..., github.com/bluesky-soci...). XRPC scopes were earlier, but as far as user communication goes it's not any better. Requesting one XRPC scope still looks scary for end users.

Subscriptions for more than one product — The Times offers games, cooking recipes and tips, product recommendations, and sports coverage alongside the core news report — continue to increase. By the end of the fourth quarter, just over half of the total subscriber base paid for access to multiple products. Whoever at @bsky.app wrote this part of the lexicon guide: I'm curious why this is the opinion of the team? "more powerful systems like Markdown are more appropriate for long-form text" atproto.com/guides/lexic...
the app.bsky.richtext.facet system can be used to annotate short text strings in a way that is simpler and safer to work with than full-featured markup languages
- for more details see "Why RichText facets in Bluesky"
- the feature type system is an open union which can be extended with additional types
- more powerful systems like Markdown are more appropriate for long-form text

My Wireservice blog post buries the lede a little bit on where I'm heading. In the second half, I talk about how I'd like to build the tools I would've needed as a former news CTO to join atproto. wordpress.wireservice.net/index.php/20...
What’s next?
Wireservice offers WordPress publishers a simple way to get their publishing data on AT Protocol. But for my target audience — news publishers — this is not enough. News publishers need a way to attract new and loyal audiences for their journalism.

What the atproto ecosystem lacks right now is a high-quality news reading experience, akin to Apple News or Smartnews. Many news publishers are used to porting their content to aggregation apps like these as long as the process is easy and the reward is worthwhile.

Luckily, Apple News Format is just JSON. Lexicons are also just JSON. Apple News Format is especially nice for publishers because its flexibility offers a high level of brand safety. Your fonts, colors, and style are transferable. While there are some core differences to work out, we can build an Apple News alternative on atproto. One that works better for publishers and for readers.

Currently, Apple News offers a ton of audience to news publishers. From experience, raw pageviews on a story on Apple News can dwarf the raw pageviews on a story at the canonical URL for a mid-size publisher. However – again from experience – those high pageviews rarely translate into anything of value for a pubilsher. Apple News readers rarely subscribe to newsletters, donate, or become members of news organizations with those offerings.

A fresh approach to news aggregation on atproto could solve many of these problems.A fresh approach to news aggregation on atproto could solve many of these problems.

- The standard.site lexicons already offer a subscription graph that this aggregator could use, giving publications a direct path to knowing who their subscribers are, rather than locking those subscriptions in another walled garden.
- The work done by ATProtoFans is a vision of what membership could look like for publishers on atproto. A news aggregator could give readers easy ways of directly supporting their chosen publications.
- As work on permissioned data continues, even paywalled content on the protocol, accessed via subscription to the publisher, becomes possible.

For readers, the benefits of a protocol-native news aggregator are also clear.

- This aggregator can work on any platform, not just Apple devices.
- Using the same feed-driven approach as Bluesky, an atproto news aggregator can offer algorithmic choice.
- By layering in other social features, an atproto news aggregator can offer a fuller experience. What news is popular in your network (a la Sill)? What are people highlighting on Margin? What Semble collections is this story a part of?So, how does this translate to a roadmap for Wireservice? Here’s what I’m thinking:

- Support a lighter content lexicon (hopefully markpub.at!) for lower-lift WordPress blogs.
- Develop a rich content lexicon that competes with Apple News Format, offering brand safety and layout flexibility.
- Build integrations for these lexicons for more publishing platforms. I had hopes for Ghost, but it looks awfully complicated.
- Build a high-quality news aggregator experience on top of these lexicons (aka, draw the rest of the fucking owl).

Is anyone from product/engineering at @cnn.com here? Your JSON-LD schema on news articles is busted. It truncates at ~10k characters, so the JSON be parsed or validated. The character count is so high because you're putting the full article in `articleBody`.

Honored to be mentioned in @kissane.myatproto.social's latest. I'm going to be thinking about this essay for a long time, with regards to sill.social and anything else I build here. www.wrecka.ge/landslide-a-...
At least one of the papers I read about knowledge formation in networks dropped some intriguing clues about the problems posed by mixed contexts and confounded intentions when people come to social media and encounter news they weren’t looking for, and maybe didn’t actually want. This feels like a fruitful and practical path for exploration, maybe in conjunction with something like Tyler Fisher’s Sill.
