Just a lil late night rant, fueled by a lot of frustration at a lot of things. A major one is how many well meaning people need to check their privilege, their biasies, or both. I figure maybe someone else can relate. Idk what tags to put on this, so if you see it & like it, maybe give it a share?

When you push people to only buy local, you're helping
screw over smal businesses that operate solely online &
depend on people who don't live near them for sales.

When you encourage people with disposable income to
buy nothing but absolute necessities,youre helping screw
over small businesses that sell literally anything else. (You
also make people feel guilty for buying something just
because it brings them joy. EW.)

When you advocate for only in person shopping, you help
screw over every small business that cannot sell in person
due to disability, distance, cost or whatever the case may
be.

When you lump small businesses in with big corporations
in your anti-capitalism content, you screw over small
business owners who are trying to keep a roof over their
heads and food on their tables.

You may not want to hear this,
but...

Not everyone is able to work a "regular" job. That is a
fact of life. Government assistance for those who can't
is pitiful and extremely difficult (and potentially
expensive) to get. Many of these people have found
relief through having the ability to sell things they
create, or their freelance services, whether online
only, online and in person or in person only. Even
people with a regular job who are unable to get one
that pays enough to survive take these routes to make
ends meet.

Vote with your dollars, absolutely.
but be careful that you don't crush
the ordinary people for the sake of
inconveniencing the ultra wealthy.

Boycotting the big companies (if/when you are able) is
one thing and can be extremely effective. But
lumping all businesses and business owners together
is actively harmful to people who are simply doing
their best to survive. It isn't their fault they have to
constantly promote their work just to be seen by a
handful of people.

A photograph of what seems to be a small family plot of graves, circa mid to late 1800's. There are four heavily weathered headstones, pointed at the top rather than round. They're all tilted or leaning due to decades of neglect. The gray stone is largely obscured by dirt, moss and other residue that has accumulated over the decades. There is a majestic Magnolia tree behind them, vivid green late summer grass at their bases and a pale blue sky with large white clouds in the background.

These are located in what has been called the most over buried and most grossly abused cemetery in the United States. Opened in 1843 & incorporated in 1854, it was also home to the first crematorium in the state of Kentucky. It didn't take the owners long to realize they could make exponentially more money by removing headstones and reselling plots. This and other nightmarish practices continued until the 1980s when the scandal came to light.

So, how can I tell the headstones in this photo are some of the earliest? Aside from the pointed shape with a design above the epitaph having been popular in the 1800's, these are facing east. I'm unsure if the practice is still popular, but back in the day it was typical for Christians to require themselves to be buried facing east. The practice originates with ancient sun worshipping cultures and was appropriated by the early Christians as so many things were. Later in the life of the cemetery, this tradition fell out of practice. Now there is a mix of headstones facing a variety of directions.

If you love weird history, I suggest checking out the documentary made about this fascinating place called Facing East. Should you find yourself in the Louisville, Kentucky area, it is definitely worth going for a stroll here.

Eastern Cemetery was closed in the 1980s when it was discovered they had been reselling burial plots for almost a century. Some plots had been resold as many as six times. The property could legally have around 29,000 burials. There were only 16,000 graves. However, authorities found records of somewhere in the realm of 138,000 (no, that's not a typo) burials.

Anyone who purchases the land will have to take on the financial burden of compensating the families who were victims of these deceptive practices. Because of that, it has remained abandoned. However, a group called Friends Of Eastern Cemetery formed not too long ago and does what they can to keep the grass trimmed and the graves clear of debris. On appropriate holidays, they hold flag ceremonies for the countless veterans buried in Eastern. The oldest military burial I have been able to find at Eastern is from the invasion of Mexico by the American army that lasted from 1846-1848.
