We're BACK with an amazing episode with Ell, @joshfightsabear.bsky.social , and @margaret.bsky.social on a bunch of weird little laws like "Love your neighbor!" Margaret turned the questions around to ask why we bother reading this weird little book. This is a great place to start if you're new! ⚓

When did you begin writing Psalms?

Idk maybe a hot take but 2018-A068 and 2022-A057 might have something to them.

Once you begin to play, prayerfully and communally, I think that's where we stand the chance of encountering the Holy Spirit doing some new and beautiful thing.

But I think one of the beautiful parts of our church is the many gifts we offer within the confines of the rules. A puzzle is more fun to put together when you have the border. You play in a sandbox because there is a box in which to not lose the sand. AND

And, to be clear, I have a deep love of the Book of Common Prayer and feel very strongly about obeying the rubrics because I don't want to do anything to mess with the magic, pardon the expression.

I brought up James Farwell's point in Ritual Excellence that there are so many different options already available to us in the prayer book that in reality, despite praying out of the same book, no two Episcopal services are *actually* identical.

So I've written a couple Eucharistic prayers that we're working on together. But another (older) priest and I were talking, and he emphasized the importance of a shared BCP.

The Word in Black and Red Pod @twibar.bsky.social · 20/08/2026
My discernment internship priest was lamenting the fact that we probably won't get a new BCP anytime soon because he fears there aren't enough poets and theologians trained up to write liturgy. I suggested that we needed to start training folks, and he said, "Good, you should do that."

The Word in Black and Red Pod @twibar.bsky.social · 20/08/2026
Fun fact: If you look at all the different options in the Book of Common Prayer for the basic liturgy of a Rite II Eucharist, the purely statistical odds of any two parish services using the identical choices is 137,625,600 to 1. ⚓

One of the major detriments of the English language is the way our emotions are separated out from the physical sensations causing the emotion. Hangry is a great word because it identifies both the feeling and its source. I propose the following:

I think even if you whizz the hell out of it, an essential part of salsa is The Chunk™. Wine (and blood) has no Chunk, so at best, it is white people salsa (ketchup).

Debating the "existence" of God: -pointless -boring -antithetical to a religion based on faith itself Debating whether or not communion by intinction is simply a variation on "chips and salsa" -invigorating -a bold new frontier for discourse -you get drunk the more you do it

Does the PCUSA include the filioque? I assume yes just because it's the Western standard, but I am not familiar enough with Presbyterian theology to know for sure. I do also have theological objections, if that's what you're looking for.

The Word in Black and Red Pod @twibar.bsky.social · 07/08/2026
My Presbyterian boss had four meetings today, including our one on one. I joked, "Don't you ever work?" And he replied, "Yeah but I have to have a meeting about it first."
010
The Word in Black and Red Pod @twibar.bsky.social · 07/08/2026
I use those two examples because they just make the whole attempt to define "conservative" or "liberal" pretty useless in the theological realm.
010
The Word in Black and Red Pod @twibar.bsky.social · 07/08/2026
I suppose where I really come down on this is that I don't think you can actually be orthodox and exclusive. You can't preach the God of love and then use that faith to justify hating people. That is heresy.
040
The Word in Black and Red Pod @twibar.bsky.social · 07/08/2026
So does that make me more or less orthodox than someone who believes in the filioque and Mary's perpetual virginity--two doctrines added in much later to official church teaching?
010
The Word in Black and Red Pod @twibar.bsky.social · 07/08/2026
I am orthodox. I can say the creeds without any problem. But I do understand "Virgin" to be Mary's title rather than an adjective about her and reject the filioque because it wasn't added at an ecumenical church council.
220
The Word in Black and Red Pod @twibar.bsky.social · 07/08/2026
Yeah, and I think the term "theologically liberal" is also fraught with problems. I am a Christian universalist--like the early church. I believe in the ordination of women--like the early church. I reject biblical interrantism--like the early church. So does that make me liberal or conservative?

I am really preferring being blasted with "My opponent hires pedophiles," which should just be the entire strategy of the Democratic party rn.

"I'm so right that even though you're wrong it doesn't matter because Jesus already saved you anyway! So HA!"

The Word in Black and Red Pod @twibar.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
I worry sometimes whether being open about the fact that I am a Christian universalist renders me unorthodox. Then I remember that the folks who shaped orthodoxy believed so fervently in the divinity & humanity of Christ that they couldn't help but become universalists because of their orthodoxy.

The Word in Black and Red Pod @twibar.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
Absolutely! I wholeheartedly reject the idea that the problem with the Protestant Reformation was that anyone could read the book and instead offer that most of the Church's failings have been in how many people didn't.

This was the whole 2FAB experience. I kept reading and going “wait, people think *this* is the book that’s anti women in leadership? This one? Have they read it?”

The Word in Black and Red Pod @twibar.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
Haha thank you! And yeah, I've been told that as well. I think I fit in the inclusive orthodoxy camp, but I tend to want to push back on anything that tries to tell other folks the way they *must* interact with a God far too large for my religion, much less my particular set of beliefs.
020
The Word in Black and Red Pod @twibar.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
And this is all just me working out for myself what y'all have been saying. I appreciate your patience, lol. It doesn't need to be in opposition to people who aren't as orthodox as us, which is what defined the "orthodoxy" of my youth and has nothing to do with y'all.

The Word in Black and Red Pod @twibar.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
You can be orthodox and exclusive (for example, Catholics). You can be heterodox and exclusive (for example, Jehovah's Witnesses). You can be heterodox and inclusive (for example, Unitarian Universalists). But you can also be orthodox and inclusive, which is the balance the Episcopal Church seeks.
131
The Word in Black and Red Pod @twibar.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
It's helpful to think of this term as outlining a grid with the axis "orthodox v. heterodox" and "inclusive v. exclusive."
120
The Word in Black and Red Pod @twibar.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
Thank you for adding this perspective. As I was describing to folks the options for my discernment internship, I had to describe the many different spectrums of difference in the Episcopal Church: Protestant v. Catholic, outwardly focused v. inwardly focused, rich v. poor, etc.

I also have a soft spot for Spong. I don't know that I agree with him on anything, I just feel instinctively defensive of anyone most people feel is an acceptable punching bag.
020
The Word in Black and Red Pod @twibar.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
I suppose this is probably where I'm pushing against it. I feel like I need to know what inclusive orthodoxy is *against* before I can know what it is *for*.

The Word in Black and Red Pod @twibar.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
I like the way that several people here have defined inclusive orthodoxy. I also don't like the way some people use that label to then justify some pretty uncomfortable beliefs. But that's also true of the label "Christian," so it's not like I'm escaping anything here, haha.
000
The Word in Black and Red Pod @twibar.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
Someone told me that makes me "generously" orthodox, but I think we've now exited the point where adding any adjectives to "orthodox" ends up not being especially helpful.
100
The Word in Black and Red Pod @twibar.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
I don't have to cross my fingers to say the creed. I also don't think someone else's salvation or sanctification is dependent on believing the creeds. I know too many holy Baptists, Quakers, Muslims, and atheists to believe that.
100
The Word in Black and Red Pod @twibar.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
I've advised many queer Christians that if you don't see a clear statement of inclusion on a church website and when you ask about it you hear, "Let's grab coffee," you need to get the hell out of dodge.
100
The Word in Black and Red Pod @twibar.bsky.social · 06/08/2026
And to be totally transparent, the reason I've engaged in an attempt to have a good faith discussion on the term is explicitly because I deeply respect @theodramatist.com and he uses the term. I'm coming to the term with both 1) my own religious trauma and 2) my identity as a queer person.

Maybe a unique thing to Aberdeen, but my shorthand was to say I go to the pisky church and people knew I meant the SEC.

So rather than being in conflict, putting “Inclusive” and “Orthodoxy” together for the folks I know who lean on the term might be a way of saying their commitment to the former is founded on the latter.
