can someone please ask CMs strauss, juarez, and hollingsworth what branch of government the executive departments belong to i know that seems like a basic question but trust me it may not be for them

when i say (somewhat intentionally) inflammatory things like, "bob kettle is making seattle less safe!" this is exactly what i mean! disinvestment in services, education, and other common goods in order to endlessly fund SPD *is* making the city worse, long-term!

here's the author more or less explicitly arguing that unduly focusing on law enforcement at the expense of investment in public health, education, and other social efforts is not only unproductive but counterproductive - likely to lead to increases in crime long-term
Picking up on the second point, the decline in crime is unlikely to be sustainable, because our conceptions of safety mechanisms are too narrow to move to the next, lower level of crime prevention. Our dialogue is too constrained. We talk mainly about levels of police manpower and task forces as plausible means to improve public safety. We do not talk about broad prevention levers like education and behavioral health as ways to reduce crime. Doing that requires a philosophical shift.

i appreciate one thing about the current budget meltdown these ding dongs are having: they are increasingly incapable of hiding the motivating conservatism underlying their actions seattle's "centrists" are (relatively) queer-friendly republicans and we should just be honest about that!

the arguments against this are 1. budgetary (because saka's priorities are bad) 2. unhoused people will use them (because saka's morals are bad) 3. wilson proposed it (because saka's politics are bad) 4. aesthetic (because historic preservation in seattle is anti-human)

look juarez is indigenous so far be it for me to wade into her specific critiques of land acknowledgements as a practice, whatever but ENOUGH with the daily reminders that 2/3 of seattle's council treats their job like a game and leaves nearly all of the serous governing to AMR, lin, and foster

me, watching this council debate the budget:
CASSANDRA
[1085] Apollo, Apollo! God of the Ways, my destroyer! Ah, what way is this that you have brought me! To what a house!

CHORUS
[1088] To that of Atreus' sons. If you do not perceive this, I'll tell it to you. And you shall not say that it is untrue.

CASSANDRA
[1090] No, no, rather to a god-hating house, a house that knows many a horrible butchery of kin, a slaughter-house of men and a floor swimming with blood.

CHORUS
[1093] The stranger seems keen-scented as a hound; she is on the trail where she will discover blood.

CASSANDRA
[1095] Here is the evidence in which I put my trust! Behold those babies bewailing their own butchery and their roasted flesh eaten by their father!

CHORUS
[1098] Your fame to read the future had reached our ears; but we have no need of prophets here.

like my distant ancestor cassandra, i will continue to shout the truth into the void and that truth is that investing in social services and non-rivalrous public goods yields measurable public safety returns

worth noting that 4 of the top 6 factors as identified by this survey of experts (and all 4 of the top 4) do not require increased police staffing and 2 of the top 4 involve better/more efficient provision of social services
Expanded community violence intervention (CVI), community-based efforts to engage directly with people at highest risk for violence, was rated major or limited by 91% of researchers and selected by 64% as one of the top contributors.
Easing pandemic-related social and economic disruption was rated a major or limited contributor by 83% of researchers and was selected as a leading contributor by 51%.
Increased use of focused deterrence, a law enforcement and social support initiative that targets high-risk individuals and groups, drew the same 83% combined rating from participants and was judged a top contributor by 43%.
Increased local government capacity to deliver various social services was rated major or limited by 75% and chosen as a leading contributor by 40%.
Increase in public safety and support resources relative to demand—a greater concentration of resources among a shrinking population of high-risk people—also garnered substantial interest, with 68% rating the factor major or limited and 28% placing it among the leading contributors.
Increase in proactive policing enforcement was similarly rated as a major or limited contributor by 68% of respondents and included as a leading contributor by 23%.

i feel like the thorny problem they should have focused on was "hey man, did you do it?"
No other accusers?
In late summer 2012, Murray, then a powerful state senator eyeing a run for Seattle mayor, organized a meeting at his home on Capitol Hill. Joining him were Reading and Sandeep Kaushik, another longtime political consultant and lobbyist.
They wrestled with a thorny problem: How would Murray deal with his former foster son’s abuse claims should they crop up publicly during a mayoral campaign?
For hours, they war-gamed potential questions from reporters. Murray offered forceful denials, noting Oregon authorities had declined to file criminal charges when Simpson first accused Murray of repeatedly raping him in the 1980s. He also referred to a stack of records he kept that impugned Simpson as a manipulative criminal.
Murray pointed out that news media had opted not to run the story in 2008, after Simpson and another accuser, Lloyd Anderson, threatened a lawsuit and spoke with some reporters.
The consultants left satisfied with Murray’s explanations, and assurances he knew of no other potential accusers.

Sandeep Kaushik
@skaushik100
Last night I did a very un-Seattle thing: I participated in a @weheartseattle panel discussion about some of Seattle’s most polarizing, hot button issues - homelessness and addiction - with people “on the other side” with whom I substantively disagree on some important and consequential things.

I feel like we dipped below the surface of what divides us as we talked about seemingly incompatible approaches like “Recovery First” vs. “Housing First,” which has some value, but even better I also think we just scratched the surface of where we actually (in some instances surprisingly) converged towards some important and potentially consequential opportunities to find common ground.

No doubt @lisadaugaard and I will take some flack for engaging in good faith dialogue with, rather than condemning, San Francisco-based recovery advocate @Twolfrecovery and Washington Policy Center’s Eric Zimmerman, at an event organized by @weheartfounder Andrea Suarez no less, and moderated by @KIROCharlie Harger, but I’m glad I did it.

Naive fool and unrepentant sellout that I am, it seems to me we would benefit from more of these sorts of nuanced and sometimes fraught conversations, rather than dining out yet again on the oh-so-satisfying empty calories of self-righteous condemnation and tribal self-congratulatory groupthink that still dominates much of the menu of Seattle’s civic discourse these days.
