pointing out that "regular" fund investing is not gambling is largely the right way to look at it but apart from the day trading aspect of it, high-beta ETFs and especially leveraged ETFs have blurred the lines between "regular" investing and gambling

i do think we shouldn't totally ignore the specifics of stories like this insofar as they are excellent illustrations of how many major journalistic orgs are obsessed with litigating ever-more-pointless questions around specifically social class and manners just like larry david, except unfunny!

there's always that one unctuous scumbag at the office who "inexplicably" keeps advancing even though his peers all hate him. he knows how to kiss the boss's ass and look like he's working hard! this isn't really much of an enigma

yes, and i also don't think it's a coincidence that everyone i've known who had this incurious, purely instrumental kind of mindset also approached their own jobs in a maximally slapdick, barely-competent way, doing the absolute minimum that was necessary for the client or boss to not pitch a fit

besides everything else, this is a perfect example of how cops act based on vibes, not the law. listen to the cop go "[the flock guy] doesn't know if he'll be in the news, if he's going to be targeted" there is no law that immunizes you from showing up in the news for what you do in public!!!

in jentleson's telling, a major triggering event for fetterman becoming gung-ho for the gaza genocide was the tree of life synagogue mass shooting. american jews did not ask for john fetterman to cheer on the killing of arabs for "our" safety (???), but he decided to be our white knight anyway

imagine how high the percentage be if they used the straightforward word "punish" instead of the bland, corporate "hold accountable"

this is also why a key component of the early maga project was to try to gaslight people into thinking that this wasn't so - that screaming 'shut the fuck up' at people only made their opinions worse

ACC's decision to declare the mountain lion having "left on its own" and stop looking for it seems particularly bonkers. it's a peninsula whose only egress to the north and east is by bridges! if you don't specifically see a big wild animal going south, why would you ever assume it's left safely?

it's small in the grand scheme of things, but the mainstream left needs to stop demanding that its enemies "be held accountable" for their crimes start using the goddamn word "punished"! "held accountable" makes it sound like punishment must be dependent on some future determination of the facts

political scientists have known for *six decades* that it generally makes no sense to treat elections as referenda on specific policies, but for some reason that doesn't stop immerwahr from going "well the people wanted X policy in 2024"

as a general point (that being nicer to these prime will not convert them) i think this is mostly right, but i do wonder a bit if these women were turned by the *combination* of mean doctors and their own sense of status i.e. "how dare you dismiss ME, a wealthy white woman, like this"

this is what cities on the west coast have done for like the last three decades, though. look at the insane design of the VTA light rail in silicon valley. huge chunks of the stops are in SFH-heavy, non-commercial suburban sprawl. it takes an hour to make a trip that cars handle in 15 minutes.

this very dumb fascist is so solipsistic and conspiracy-brained that he cannot fathom how someone could possibly have blunt force head trauma as a result of a fall, or that someone might take money off a defenseless person who had just injured themselves

this is funny and probably close to the mark but i do think there is a subtle difference between bouie's reading and cottle's: the difference between *awareness* of racism and anti-racist *action*. "wait...it was fine to *understand* this stuff, but nobody thought you would DO something about it"

newsom's behavior makes very little sense unless one considers that his head is so far up his own ass that he thinks he needs to pander to a real constituency jonesing for MAGA trade policy. (he's wrong, there barely is one, and it should invite questions about why he thinks there is)

real cool how the media treats about a million different issues as "on the one hand this progressive politician would like to enforce basic laws but on the other hand people who don't have a legal or moral leg to stand on and just wanna have impunity will be real mad, what a political conundrum"

this is literally a huge reason why the state outlawed attempting to criminalize sidewalk vending with SB 946: for decades, brick-and-mortar business owners insisted that they should get to dictate the terms of their own competition, and local politicians were only too happy to oblige them

another deep cause of what's brought us to this pass is that there are literal entire classes of those engaged in wild rent-seeking at the expense of the public (these farmers, ranchers on public lands) whom our elite discourse-gatekeepers have made it taboo, almost unpatriotic, to criticize

i still think that one of the defining characteristics of this era is in how much continuity it has with previous periods: the main difference is that we couldn't *prove* all the ways our systems were full of malfeasance and now there are proud written records of it

my thinking is still that this is all of a piece with the leopards-eating-faces stories like that one yesterday of the trump voter whose russian wife got snatched by ICE. for me the best explanation is that they see things like votes, and the working of politics, as not fully real.

compare and contrast with how outlets handled the woody brown facilitated communication novel: credulously hyping up a book his mom wrote for him, only to quietly back away with zero introspection about it the instant that one commentator started pointing out its problems

in this case i think even *this* is giving lots of people too much credit. while *health care wonks* understand and accept the tradeoffs, their numbers are dwarfed by the audience for slopulism - the idea that we can have good cheap healthcare by *purely* destroying private insurers

one obvious question prompted by this is whether what's really going on is that *parents* are the main indoctrinators, and that some of college's un-indoctrinating effect comes down to kids no longer living under their parents' roof

as despicably as scott wiener has acted in this campaign (irrespective of the latest dumb chatbot flap) he has a pretty solid case that he is the only candidate who *hates* republicans and wants to see them suffer for the sake of justice. connie chan doesn't seem to get the necessity of this.

one of the big deep causes of the mess we're living through now is that the type of person who rises through the ranks to an executive role at world-famous institutions owes their success to being an *enormous* chickenshit toady. their natural instinct when trouble comes is to bow and scrape.

the simple act of *considering warsh legitimate in any way* is a huge tell in and of itself. they are treating a jumped-up mid-level banker who only made it to the Fed because of his gazillionaire father-in-law Bush megadonor ron lauder as an economic expert like powell or bernanke

feels like an underrated cause of lab leak hysteria is that pundits fundamentally do not understand science, and how science is not at all like punditry: a hypothesis isn't some random brainfart that you put out there to see if it gets traction, but a guess that you then actively try to falsify

makes sense, though i do wonder if we are seeing a sort of lagging effect related to the pandemic. a *lot* of people got lonely enough in 2020 that they HAD to have a dog despite not being great pet owners; seems like some could be having second thoughts by now, with or without financial pressure

semi-relatedly, i think we are likely going to need to reckon with how this blindness is distorting lots of institutions but particularly those in public health, which COVID put into a permanent neurotic crouch "how do we fix *ourselves* so we don't lose public trust again?!?", they wail

the weird thing about this is that we all know the US of the past wasn't really that regular, either, at least as i understand the connotation here. schools and workplaces were often incredibly irregular, but the top levels of government and courts certainly weren't

ironically i think trump himself has long been acutely frightened of exactly this, and it explains a lot of his "dovishness" toward the US's erstwhile rivals with iran, he came to believe that they couldn't kill him personally. and of course he doesn't care about threats to anyone else like aides

it actually totally fits with everything we know not just about musk's egomania/solipsism but his lazy slapdick approach to learning anything "i tried to do a thing once, my first attempt sucked, rather than work patiently on improving at it i'll just give up and declare that *nobody* can do it"

yes and this is an ENORMOUS reason that cops effectively nullified things like COVID public health rules, particularly in jurisdictions like reddish parts of california. they decided it was ipso facto unfair to punish the white respectable people they liked just for refusing to obey the law!
