This Is Lorelei - An Extra Beat for You and Me - Tim Heidecker Version It's wild how much more I like the TIL songs when they're sung by other people.

CHVRCHES - Roses You start out like, "Yeah, okay. It's CHVRCHES, got it." And then the chorus kicks in and not only is it a next-level hook, but that choral effect!

Maisy Owen - Fare Thee Well, Miss Carousel True, you’d have to try to make any Townes Van Zandt song sound bad, but still…this is something special.

The Chemical Brothers - Loops Of Fury Shut up, this is the best Chemical Brothers song.

This Is Lorelei - I Will Eat My Heart in the Morning Light I always like the songs more than the presentation (maybe why I like the alternate versions with guest vocalists), but this is a damn fine...

Perennial - Ready! Steady! Go! Maybe the shouting isn't for everyone, but my God does the whole package give me the tingles.

The Rolling Stones - Divine Intervention I really don't want to think too much about the digital audio plastic surgery that went into this record, but goddamn...this is GOOD.

Brinsley Schwarz - Country Girl You think I don't know that Nick Lowe knows how to write the hell out of a song?! Because I do. Know.

Dolly Parton - Here I Am A post asked when Dolly went from being a fun entertainer to a deeply and even ferociously appreciated artist. The time I noticed it was in the mid-90s when my Indigo Girls...

Mandy, Indiana - I'll Ask Her Simply one of the most upsetting and angering songs I've ever heard, but it's one that needs to be in the world.

LCD Soundsystem - Home Still perfect.

Jens Lekman - Increasingly Obsolete I didn't give this song enough love last year, so I'm making up for it. Like so many Jens Lekman songs, it's a good song and then you listen to the lyrics and love...

Slow Leaves - Tired Nothing like a song that's nothing but a great hook.

The American Analog Set - We're Computerizing and We Just Don't Need You Anymore a) Gorgeous, and b) Hard not to see that title in Our Current Moment and think "Oh."

MEMORIALS - Life Could Be A Cloud It's not easy to decide whether the loud part or the soft part is better. Well, okay. It's the loud part. But the quiet part is beautiful.

The Brand New Heavies - Dream On Dreamer On of those tracks that is totally of its time...and perfectly so. It's aged perfectly.

Meg Lui - Elvis Queen Is it coincidence that this wonderfully summery track drops smack dab in the middle of summer? IF IT IS, DON'T TELL ME. I prefer to think magic.

Steve Gunn - Shape of a Wave You: You overuse the word "lovely". Me: I USE IT EXACTLY WHEN IT IS APPROPRIATE, WHICH IS OFTEN.

Whale - Hobo Humpin' Slobo Babe Even at the time, this song was clearly both dumb and irresistible (not in the least because of its bizarrely erotic video). And so it is today. But also: that guitar...

Le Tigre - Keep On Livin' A beautiful expression of finding the beauty of life in the face of trauma.

Underworld - Cowgirl - Remastered Constantly amazing how Underworld managed to tap this one spectacularly rich seam of electronic music.

David Gray - Lullaby Call it corny if you want, but I recommend embracing your inner corniness, no matter how deep it is. Feels so good.

Dehd - Desire I'd forgotten how great this song is...because it came out SIX YEARS AGO?!!?!

David Bowie - Fashion - 2017 Remaster It's on all the best-of comps, but it feel rare to hear people put it in their Bowie favorites. It's at least top five for me, if not number one.

Julianna Barwick - Same Just glorious.

Genesis Owusu - STAMPEDE Everyone hates the term now, and I still use it too much, but: this guy kicks so much ass. There's no better way to put it!

Wire - I Am the Fly - 2006 Remastered Version This is alongside "How Soon Is Now" in my list of songs that sound surprisingly great when played on an acoustic guitar.

Asher White - Nightingale Version (Sailor's Moon) {extreme Southern Mom voice} Well, don't this just make your ears perk right on up!

The Itch - No More Sprechgesang I refuse—REFUSE—to properly learn what sprechgesang is, but I really like this song anyway.

Lily Seabird - Demon in Me WAIT FOR IT.

Lucas - Lucas with the Lid Off There's an entire section of 90s music that's really nothing more than fun. That's it. It's just fun and you want to hang out with your friends with it on. And that says...

Westside Cowboy - Pin Up Boys Oh, I see. This is one of those good songs. Got it.

Olivia Rodrigo - purple First few listens verdict has been that it's consistently really good, but nothing has exploded in my mind like some of her past songs. This one is creeping in, though...

The Bothy Band - The Kesh Jig/Give Us a Drink of Water/The Flower of the Flock/Famous Ballymote The little grocery store around the corner from my house plays the most bonkers variety of music. I...

Simple Minds - Murder Story - Remastered 2002 The first Simple Minds album is all but forgotten, and not for bad reasons. It was a band still finding a sound different than just aping their idols...

Trashcan Sinatras - Bad Husband Adding Tracyanne Campbell to an already-lovely song is almost too potent. But I'll gladly overdose on this.

Björk - Big Time Sensuality You ever have those songs that you think that surely everyone in the world knows and then it occurs to you that, in fact, MOST people don't know it?

Nilüfer Yanya - Baby Luv I am never not blown away by this song.

RJD2 - Beasts Per Minute Good music, great rapping, and the best song title in a long time.

Silver Gore - Black Cherry Liqueur Another song answering the question "is this hook brilliant or annoying" with "yes".

Haley Bonar - Kismet Kill That Chord Change™️

Star Moles - Time If you're not onto this album, get on it. Gives me a little bit of a seventies singer-songwriter feel for whatever reason.

Deadstar - Dont It Get You Down In the increasingly-challenging game called Is This From The 90s Or Brand New And Just Sounds Like It's From The 90s, I got this one wrong when I first heard it.

English Teacher - Parasite Given the hands involved, no surprise that it's guitar forward, but as an added bonus, it's also a great song. Lucky us.

Yvonne Elliman - Everything's Alright Absolutely zero of Andrew Lloyd Webber has ever grabbed me up to recenty. But that melody of Yvonne Elliman's main part is spectacular. Maybe it's just Yvonne...

Kevin Morby - Water I can't think of another artist whose songs I don't particularly like, but whose production I adore.

My New Band Believe - Numerology This song is a pretty remarkable display of music, but I keep getting distracted by the damn band name. He's gotta change it soon, right?

FILM - Roundabout I keep thinking this is the Futureheads when it comes on, BUT IT ISN'T. Good story, thanks.
