Very pleased to recognize Dr. Antonia Coello Novello as part of Hispanic Heritage Month!
Graphic with photo and text: Antonia Coello Novello is the Puerto Rican physician who became the first woman and the first Hispanic person to serve as Surgeon General of the United States. Born in Fajardo, she earned her medical degree from the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine and trained in pediatrics and nephrology, a path shaped in part by her own childhood experience of a chronic illness that went untreated for years. She joined the U.S. Public Health Service in 1979 and spent the following decade at the National Institutes of Health, where her work on pediatric AIDS drew national attention.Graphic with photo and text: Appointed the fourteenth Surgeon General by President George H. W. Bush in 1990, Dr. Novello used the office to focus on the health of women, children, and minority communities. She confronted tobacco companies over advertising aimed at young people, launched a national campaign against underage drinking, and pushed immunization and childhood injury prevention into the mainstream of public health practice. After leaving the post in 1993, she served as a special representative to UNICEF on global child health, then led one of the largest public health agencies in the country as Commissioner of Health for the State of New York from 1999 to 2006. Her career reminds us that a physician's voice, used plainly and persistently, can reshape what a nation considers acceptable.

Hispanic Heritage Month: Remembering Dr. Helen Rodríguez-Trías, a true pioneer in public health!
Photo and graphic with text: Dr. Helen Rodríguez-Trías (1929 to 2001), a physician, educator, and activist whose work reshaped American public health. Born in New York City to Puerto Rican parents, she returned to Puerto Rico for her medical training and founded the island's first center for the care of newborns, where deaths among newborn infants fell by half within three years. Back in New York, she led the pediatrics department at Lincoln Hospital in the Bronx, building a practice grounded in culturally responsive care for communities that the medical system had long overlooked.Photo and graphic with text: Her influence extended well beyond the clinic. She became a national leader in the women's health and reproductive rights movement, co-founding the Committee for Abortion Rights and Against Sterilization Abuse and helping shape the federal guidelines that established real protections for informed consent. In 1993 she became the first Latina elected president of the American Public Health Association, and in 2001 she received the Presidential Citizens Medal for a lifetime of advocacy on behalf of women, children, and marginalized populations. Her legacy continues to guide practitioners who understand equity as the core of the work rather than an addition to it.

In the coming weeks, we'll be celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month by recognizing major contributors in the field of public health! This week we celebrate Dr. Carlos Juan Finlay.
Graphic with Finlay's photo. Text: Finlay was a Cuban physician and epidemiologist whose research permanently changed how the world understands yellow fever. In 1881, he became the first to propose that mosquitoes served as the vector transmitting the disease, a claim that was dismissed and ridiculed for nearly two decades before the Walter Reed Commission confirmed it. His insight made possible the mosquito control strategies that saved countless lives, including during the construction of the Panama Canal, a project that had defeated earlier efforts largely
because of disease.Graphic with Finlay's photo. Text:
Finlay served as Cuba's chief health officer from 1902 to 1909 and published extensively on yellow fever across his career. He was elected president of the American Public Health Association in 1905, and he was nominated seven times for the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine without ever receiving it. His legacy endures through international honors, including the UNESCO Carlos J. Finlay Prize for Microbiology. Today he is remembered as a pioneer of epidemiology whose persistence outlasted his critics. You can visit his likeness on the 24th floor in the Dean's Office, where there is a large bronze bust dedicated
to him.
