Loon and Deer is the traditional story featured at the 2026 Lushootseed Language Camp, as told by William Shelton and Vi Hilbert.

The Tulalip Canoe Family performed on day 5 of the ləʔišɬ dxʷʔal tə sq̓ʷaliʔ sxʷdaʔdəb paɬəč - Paddle to Nisqually Medicine Creek Potlatch, hosted by the Nisqually Indian Tribe. The theme this year was suhəliʔilalqʷušitbuɬčəɬ ʔə tiiɬ ƛ̕ashikʷcəb ʔə kʷi yəl̕yəlabčəɬ - Healing Through Our Waters by Honoring Our Ancestors.

The traditional story "Deer & Loon" is the theme for Language Camp 2026. The play will be performed live by the camp attendees at 11:30AM on Friday, July 17th. This is week two of Language Camp.

Language Camp is a week-long event designed for Tribal member youth ages 5-12. Throughout the camp, participants will explore language and culture through engaging activities centered around this year's traditional story, "Owl and Chipmunk." Held at the Kenny Moses Building from 10 AM to 3 PM, the camp features eight interactive stations that youth will visit each day. Campers will be divided into five rotating groups, ensuring they experience a variety of learning opportunities. Lunch and an afternoon snack will be provided, though families are responsible for transportation. With materials prepared for up to 50 youth, this immersive experience fosters cultural connection and storytelling in a meaningful way.

Join the Lushootseed Language Warriors as they journey into the forests of the Pacific Northwest to learn about one of the region’s most respected traditional plants—Devil’s Club. In late June 2026, Lushootseed teachers ventured into the woods to identify, harvest, and learn the cultural significance of Devil’s Club while strengthening their connection to the Lushootseed language, the land, and the teachings of their ancestors. Through hands-on learning, participants experienced how language and traditional ecological knowledge work together to preserve culture for future generations.
