Maybe it could, but the teacher would also bear some responsibility. These don't seem like simple note-taking errors (and you don't seem like someone who makes lots of errors, either).

Hopkins has covered two of the four types correctly, defined another one implicitly but mostly misplaced it, & completely omitted the fourth. I'm not saying the classification is sacred, but it is widely used. I think covering it incompletely risks confusing their students.

Those four data types (nominal/ordinal/interval/ratio) are a very common classification, by the way. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Level_o... They're not without criticism, but they're still widely taught, 80 years later.

Finally interval data can be either continuous or (more often) dIscrete, so it doesn't seem correct to include a definition of interval data in section 1 without a caveat. And I think most continuous variables are ratio data, so the lack of any mention of ratio data in section 1 also seems strange.

tuffrings.bsky.social @tuffrings.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
At least they acknowledge that binary data is actually categorical. But they said "technically", so the admission seems reluctant. I'm not sure why.
110
tuffrings.bsky.social @tuffrings.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
It seems quite odd to then put a section 2 (Binary) in between them, when that is actually a very specific part of section 3.
210
tuffrings.bsky.social @tuffrings.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Now categorical can mean either nominal or discrete, and Hopkins section 3 clearly includes more than just nominal data. So presumably categorical here means discrete, and Hopkins sections 1 and 3 simply reflect the continuous/discrete distinction.

tuffrings.bsky.social @tuffrings.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
You're familiar with the nominal/ordinal/interval/ratio data classification, which is widely used in survey research. Statistics also makes a distinction between continuous and discrete data.

tuffrings.bsky.social @tuffrings.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
None of those sub-definitions is in itself incorrect. But their placement seems quite odd.
110
tuffrings.bsky.social @tuffrings.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Within (3), they describe two sub-types, nominal and ordinal. They also say binary data is technically categorical. Within (1), they say a unit means the same thing across all values, which seems like an informal definition of interval data.
110
tuffrings.bsky.social @tuffrings.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Sections 1-3 present this classification of data types: 1) Continuous 2) Binary 3) Categorical
110
tuffrings.bsky.social @tuffrings.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
These two data types are quite specific. I think they should have dealt with them quite separately, not as a section alongside and just as prominent as sections 1-3. Here they just muddy the waters.
100
tuffrings.bsky.social @tuffrings.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Section 4 is dealing with much more specific data types than sections 1-3. It is titled "time to event data", but actually covers two different types of variables (time to event data, & counts of events during a time period), so the section title seems a bit misleading.
100
tuffrings.bsky.social @tuffrings.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
It's not entirely accurate, but I think the inaccuracies are minor and much less troubling than its incoherence.

tuffrings.bsky.social @tuffrings.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
They must live in a charmed world. I find it frustrating enough when people pull that trick on an explanatory variable (e.g. ethnicity). Doing it on the first question suggests an unholy level of arrogance, especially in the context of those conditions.
010
tuffrings.bsky.social @tuffrings.bsky.social · 05/10/2026
I think it mostly isn't up to individual choice. There's some ambiguity about the meaning of categorical (nominal vs anything discrete) & discrete (sometimes taken to imply numerical/interval), but I think there's a clear consensus on the rest. That Hopkins info looks like a dog's breakfast though.

It should, but praying that the MSM suddenly sees the light is just another form of hoping for the best. The MSM continues to lurch to the right. We need regulation and reform of both news media and social media.

And yet, the USA Today article linked above points out that: "Case outcomes at Cornell largely aligned with those of its peers." "New York’s data shows that expulsions and suspensions remain exceedingly rare across the state – not just at Cornell." Do you want to close all 26 colleges studied?

The obvious counter move is for every Labour supporter to lend their party vote to the Greens, while still voting Labour with their electorate vote. Then Labour should still win many electorates, and the Greens will win more overhang seats that might cancel out the ACT and NZ First overhang seats.
