Xata is now on Google Cloud. Spin up an isolated Postgres branch from your production data in 3 seconds, in-region in us-central1 (Iowa). Every coding agent, PR, and CI run gets its own production-like database. No shared staging, no migration.

Very proud that we are be able to sponsor pgBackRest and therefore help with the continuing maintenance of the project. It's rock solid and fast, the properties you want from the backup solution. It's the safety net we offer to all @xata.io customers.

We run 100% vanilla Postgres. No fork, no modifications. A deliberate decision from day one to build a platform around Postgres, with branching at the storage layer instead of inside the database. This means the whole Postgres ecosystem just works with Xata.

Tudor Golubenco @tudor.golubenco.org · 22/06/2026
Each branch is a full Postgres compute instance, with copy-on-write at the storage layer. So you get instant branching with all the data.

Branching gives every engineer and every agent their own Postgres. Now every branch has its own logs. Read, filter, and search them in the console, or match a pattern in one click. Same logs in your terminal with xata branch logs.

Introducing the latest in Postgres for agentic workloads. Agents can now branch or wake your Postgres database instantly.

We’ll make it available on @xata.io soon, and I hope other Postgres services are going to offer it as well. I think a pure open source time-series extension is something the Postgres ecosystem really needs.

It’s still slower than analytics-focused DBs like clickhouse or duckdb, but actually not that far behind. Consider getting that kind of performance without ever having to take the data out of Postgres.

Tudor Golubenco @tudor.golubenco.org · 19/05/2026
It’s very early days, but the benchmarks already look really good. On ClickBench, it’s significantly faster than Timescale on almost all queries. The combined score is 4.7 times better.

There’s something I’ve been feverishly working on, and I just turned the repo public: pg_deltax, a fast time-series extension for PostgreSQL. Basically an Apache-licensed Timescale alternative. Please give it a star: github.com/xataio/deltax
ClickHouse: x1.15
pg_deltax: x2.19
TimescaleDB: x10.04

Thanks, and I agree with age != maturity. Btw, we did have a good deal of issues with SPDK and is the reason we are moving away from it (not sure if the blog post is clear enough on that). The rest has been kind with us so far.

Not sure I'd call ZFS and NVMe-oF fringe tech, but I get what you mean :) . Our user-space implementation of NVMe-oF is new, but well tested and hardened. Besides that everything else is mature tech. Overall it's actually a significant simplification of our platform, which is what I like the most.

Xata - open source Postgres platform with CoW branching by Tudor Golubenco
Xata core is now available as open source under the Apache 2 license. It adds copy-on-write branching, scale-to-zero compute to Postgres.

Tudor Golubenco @tudor.golubenco.org · 15/04/2026
Also, the more agents do dev work for you, the more important scale-to-zero is, to keep infra costs low.

Tudor Golubenco @tudor.golubenco.org · 15/04/2026
I’m obviously biased, but I think this is the ideal product for the coding agents era. Code is cheap now, but validating it with realistic data is not simple. Synthetic or seeded data is limited, copying the data with pg_dump takes ages.

Today we're open sourcing the Xata platform, a cloud-native Postgres platform. - Fast copy-on-write branching. - Automatic scale-to-zero. - 100% Vanilla Postgres. We run upstream Postgres, no modifications. - Production grade: HA, failover/switchover, upgrades, PITR, IP filtering, etc.

Postgres constraints are the rules that keep your data clean. Types tell you *what* can be stored but constraints enforce *what must be true*. If a row violates a rule, Postgres rejects it. No silent corruption. A few well-chosen constraints prevent entire classes of bugs. xata.io/blog/constra...
