Is female genital cutting worse than male genital cutting? If you ask the women, they sometimes say what men experience is worse.
Given the respective numbers affected and the fact that some MGA outcomes are
worse than some instances of FGA, there is no justification for perpetuating the
gender discrimination that has characterized discussion of these issues. Indeed, a
female victim of forced circumcision during a “holy war” by Islamic extremists in
Indonesia commented afterward that what was done to the men was worse than
what the women suffered: “I know the men suffered more than us women. The
circumcision hurt them more than it did to us because their scars could not heal fast.
Several of the men I knew got serious infections after suffering from severe bleeding”

This is the good stuff right here, folks. I am just kicking myself over and over and over again that I didn't know about hir work until today. This would have been so incredibly helpful if I had it in 2023 or even 2024 before beginning my collaborative autoethnography.
Often in mainstream (predominately white) intersex rights and trans rights movements solidarity is imagined in terms of “natural allyship” based on common experiences of subjugation due to being situated outside of the gender binary and common interests in addressing stigma and establishing bodily autonomy. Despite these commonalities, however, intercommunity tensions over cissexism in many intersex communities, conflation in some trans communities, and the erasure of trans and intersex people of color are apparent. Meanwhile, the scholarly literature on intersex and trans communities tends to only address either trans or intersex issues with a narrow with a white bias, leaving little that addresses intercommunity relations and the tensions and possibilities for solidarity therein. In this research, Meyers articulates a reimagining of solidarity based on the theories and written narrated experiences of trans and intersex people of various backgrounds via textual methods. This reimagining of solidarity challenges the idea of “natural allyship” based on commonality in favor of a conception of solidarity that is intentional and accounts for differences as well as commonalities. Over the course of this reimagining, Meyers also calls for the transformation of Transgender Studies and Intersex Studies to form Intersex and Trans Studies with an emphasis on BIPOC, intersectional feminist, queer, and disabled critiques.

When I'm confronted with this kind of question, I consult this model of neutralizations (rationalizations). www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.... This technique is called relativizing.
    6. Relativizing the norm violation

People employ the technique of relativizing the norm violation when they acknowledge that they have breached a norm but that it is not “that” bad. We have identified five arguments by which the relativization takes place: others (as long as others are as bad or even worse), the frequency (as long as it is not too often), the seriousness (as long as it could be worse), the good deeds (as long as it is in balance), and regret (as long as there is remorse). These subtechniques are arranged according to decreasing number of arguments available for neutralizing: relativizing has less depth and are less persuasive and thus closer to the admission of deviant behavior.

Oh! I know this one! This is called "nuancing that there is a truth so long as not observed personally" Extremely important technique used by people to justify killing! www.tandfonline.com/doi/full/10....
Even when the facts are proven, people can nuance them by suggesting that they should first observe the facts themselves before it can be true. As long as they have not observed the facts themselves it is not real, and judgment has to be suspended (cf. Hewitt and Stokes Citation1975). Kooistra and Mahoney (Citation2016) found that this technique is extremely important in war where soldiers justify their killing by believing that their actions harm no one. Solders can deny the existence of their victims and their victims’ injuries because they do not see their faces and bodies. Rhodes and Cusick (Citation2002) found that people justified unprotected sex even when they were diagnosed to be HIV-positive; they thought that because they did not fell ill then they had beaten the disease.

Very excited for this article to finally be published! Coming soon to the Journal of Bodies, Sexualities, and Masculinities...
No one is more affected by unwanted genital cutting than the person whose genitals are forcibly cut, and no one is better positioned to make decisions that go to the heart of a person’s identity than the person themselves. Parents or clinicians who express defensiveness about forced genital cutting or deny that harm has occurred are engaging in rationalizations that disenfranchise children and compound their pain (Kaptein and van Helvoort 2019)

"metaphysical beliefs cannot justify treatment decisions that will result in significant physical or psychosocial harm to a child here and now."
is neither necessary, nor useful, to insist that the religious belief is false and, hence, that it should be excluded from decision-making in medical spaces. Rather, there are limitations to the extent to which it can guide (some) treatment decisions. In other words, we can identify a useful mid-level principle for the kinds of refusal cases that concern Brummett: the child’s life and physical and psychosocial well-being outweighs the child’s metaphysical well-being if and when the two come into significant conflict.

Secular Clinical Ethicists Should Not Be Neutral Toward All Religious Beliefs: An Argument for a Moral-Metaphysical Proceduralism Abram Brummett (2021). doi.org/10.1080/1526... #Bioethics #Philosophy #Religion #Belief #Medicine
The need for P2+ is demonstrated by analyzing and rejecting three standards (the best interest or harm principle, internal reasonability, and the child’s right to an open future) used by P2 to justify overriding religiously motivated refusals of treatment for children. These approaches fail because each maintains a neutral stance regarding the truth of religious belief. This paper drives at the broader thesis that the proceduralism of secular clinical ethics requires some moral and metaphysical commitments.

People who insist that children born with a vulva deserve more protection than other children are just chauvinists who don't understand how similar all forms of forced genital cutting are in making children feel violated and harmed.
MacClymont: Some argue that pursuing equal rights litigation to protect all children from genital cutting harms girls by detracting from the issue of female genital cutting or minimizing its severity. How do you respond to that?

Robinett: It’s actually contradictory to have laws that protect girls from genital cutting while still allowing it for boys and intersex children. You have to ask yourself: Would it be acceptable if someone argued to legalize female genital mutilation because, for example, many Muslims believe it’s part of their religious practice or claim it has similar health benefits to male circumcision? Would we be willing to reverse our laws and start allowing the mutilation of girls for these reasons? To truly protect girls, and all children, from genital cutting, we need to eliminate the double standard. We often condemn what happens “over there” in other cultures while turning a blind eye to our own practices. If we viewed genital cutting rationally, it would be clear that circumcision is a form of child abuse and torture, regardless of the child’s sex.

To take a quote from my book: “If our society could see genital cutting from a rational perspective, it certainly would consider circumcision child abuse and torture. But no, we clearly see what people do ‘over there’ in other countries, as primitive and wrong, but are we without sin?”

The AAP's own expert, a Jewish MD who circumcised his boys on the kitchen table, says that pediatricians should get out of the circumcision business.
It is a non-therapeutic procedure. If it can be called a preventative medicine, it is at the very weakest level. There is nothing wrong with the [uncircumcised] penis; you cannot recommend circumcision based on the medical benefit alone. Nothing about the potential benefits is communicable, so I don't see how it could be called a public health concern. ...Maybe the AAP should get out of the [circumcision] business, since it's not really a medical practice. It's only a 'medical procedure' in the sense that

medical professionals are performing it."

I'm not sure what you're asking. People have been fighting to end forced genital cutting, including forced circumcision, for decades. Even the AAP's own expert, a Jewish MD, says it's time to stop doing circumcisions. This guy circumcised his sons on his kitchen table and he says let's stop it.

"Ritual circumcision among Danish boys is linked to an overall 46–62% increase in ASD risk in the first 10 years of life"
our findings suggest that
circumcision may somehow trigger the development
of ASD in a small fraction of young boys. These
findings obviously do not prove the suggested associations. However, in combination with recent animal
studies showing lifelong deficits in stress responses
following exposure to just one single neonatal
insult, the observed strong correlation between circumcision and ASD prevalence, and clinical observations of long-term changes in pain perception in
circumcised infants, our population-based findings
should prompt other researchers to examine the possibility that circumcision trauma in infancy or early
childhood might carry an increased risk of serious,
yet hitherto unappreciated negative neurodevelopmental and psychological consequences.
110
They/Them (T. T. Perry) @ttpphd.bsky.social · 27/05/2026
The authors are careful to say "These findings obviously do not prove the suggested associations." And more research is needed (but not done due to social stigma).
Results
With a total of 4986 ASD cases, our study showed that regardless of cultural background circumcised boys were more likely than intact boys to develop ASD before age 10 years (HR = 1.46; 95% CI: 1.11–1.93). Risk was particularly high for infantile autism before age five years (HR = 2.06; 95% CI: 1.36–3.13). Circumcised boys in non-Muslim families were also more likely to develop hyperkinetic disorder (HR = 1.81; 95% CI: 1.11–2.96). Associations with asthma were consistently inconspicuous (HR = 0.96; 95% CI: 0.84–1.10).
Conclusions
We confirmed our hypothesis that boys who undergo ritual circumcision may run a greater risk of developing ASD. This finding, and the unexpected observation of an increased risk of hyperactivity disorder among circumcised boys in non-Muslim families, need attention, particularly because data limitations most likely rendered our HR estimates conservative. Considering the widespread practice of non-therapeutic circumcision in infancy and childhood around the world, confirmatory studies should be given priority.

This quote from Aimee Carrillo Rowe crystalizes what differential belonging means. It means recognizing we are oppressed AND privileged. It means meaningful political work can shape group consciousness even in spaces where we might belong "less" because of identity politics.
Di√erential belonging calls us to reckon with the ways in which we
are oppressed and privileged as we move across sites of belonging so
that we may place ourselves where we can have an impact and where we
can share experience that will shape the community’s consciousness.
The key to di√erential belonging is that you do not have to be someone,
in terms defined by identity politics, in order to do the political work
that di√erential belonging entails. The conflation between identity and
politics is unnecessarily limiting as an isolated mode of belonging

I practiced differential belonging. If we want to change our trajectory, we have to turn from the current path. A differential is a system that, among other things, allows for two sides of an axle shaft to spin at different speeds, permitting the vehicle wheels to turn smoothly.
Image of a car differential system and 10 bullet points. 1. Bevel gear
The bevel gear is fitted to the end of the
driveshaft, which delivers output from
the engine via the transmission.

2. Crown wheel
Meshes with the bevel gear
and transmits drive from
the engine into the
differential coupling.

3. Differential cage
The crown wheel is fixed to the
differential cage and sends power
directly from the engine into it.

4. Differential gears
The heart of a differential is the
planetary gear set which consists
of four opposing pinion gears.

5. Same speed
When there is no speed
difference between the
wheels, none of the planetary
pinion gears within it rotate.

6. Different speed
The intervention of the differential
allows the axle shafts to rotate at
different speeds to the pinion
shaft. If it were not there, all three
would be directly connected, so
rotation differences would not
be possible.

7. Opposite number
Each planetary pinion gear is
connected to two others. When in
operation, each rotates in the opposite
direction to the one directly facing it.

8. Side gear
The two side gears are
directly connected to the
axle shaft.

9. Free wheeling
Free-wheelingplanetarypinion
gears are connected to the side sun
gears, which are fed drive from the
input pinion. When a speed
differential is required, the pinion
gears begin to rotate.

10. Differential location
In a rear-wheel drive car as shown
here, the differential is mounted
on the rear axle.

Diversity and inclusion benefits everyone. diversity and inclusion benefits everyone. Progress for some can be turned into progress for more.
It’s just beneficial for everybody to be inclusive. For example, Walter at https://foreskin-restoration-devices.com produces devices that are inclusive of more anatomical variations, including vulvas. Walter’s work has resulted in device options for transmasculine people who want to stretch the clitoral hood or foreskin which often doesn’t grow as fast as the rest of the clitoris or “T-dick” when on testosterone. That same device is now being adapted for people with penises and can be used with less tissue, allowing people to passively restore earlier on into their their foreskin restoration journeys. So diversity and inclusion benefits everyone.

Alliana's wildest response from a therapist was, “Do you feel like you have to be a woman because you’re circumcised?”, and was also literally told “There are starving children in Africa.” That is not an appropriate way to respond to someone's grief.
So, a man and a woman walk into a therapist’s office. The man says, “I’m unhappy with my circumcised penis.” The therapist responds, “I’m circumcised, and it doesn’t bother me. You must be confused.” The woman says, “I’m unhappy with my circumcised penis.” And the therapist responds, “Well, just get vaginoplasty, and then it won’t matter. Why should you care about your penis?” Both of these responses are invalidating and disenfranchise the man’s grief and the woman’s grief in different ways.

When we apply the four central principles of bioethics—autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, and justice—we are confronted with a critical question: Does routine infant circumcision meet the ethical standards medicine claims to uphold?

This question is not limited to clinicians or ethicists. It is relevant to anyone concerned with children’s rights, bodily autonomy, and the integrity of medical practice.

We are circumcision sufferers, too, and a united coalition is key to challenging laws that permit adults to impose unwanted genital surgery on children.

This is a picture of me politely asking you to just not talk about the wig. Dwayne can't hear you. The wig stylist can't hear you. But I can hear you. 🤪

I joined circumcision grief support groups and intactivist discord servers. I invested in cis boys and men. Now, in 2026, Trump can't pronounce the word "mutilation" and the intactivists are featuring me, a trans/nonbinary genital autonomy advocate, as a speaker at their biggest annual conference.

In 2026, something HUGE is happening in the fight for bodily autonomy! Experts from #medicine, #law, #science, #ethics, and community organizing are coming together to end all forced genital cutting of children. I'll be speaking at Intact Global in April. www.intactglobal.org/events/2026-...

QUOTE "This fantasy of being able to go back – to a time of pre-identity investments, to a more real politics – plays directly into anti-gender proponents’ hands. ... (1/3)
Focusing specifically on anti-trans* arguments within feminist theory, I revisit the progress, loss and return narratives of Why Stories Matter(2011) to try and unpick and resist the teleological assumptions underpinning fantasies that 'sex' and 'gender' were ever and ever could be in a settled relationship. Rethinking these questions also raises methodological ones about 'what next?' that I try to answer with a form of recitation that focuses on the multiple genealogies of a sex determinist rather than sex essentialist history within the field.

The actual history is nonconsensual experimentation on intersex children and circumcision sufferers, then those "insights" were applied to children with endosex bodies and non-conforming genders.
Abstract

This book provides a new and distinct approach to gender through the frameworks of biopolitics and genealogy, theorizing it as a historically specific apparatus of biopower. Through the use of a diverse mix of historical and contemporary documents, the book explores how the problematization of intersex infant genitalia in 1950s psychiatry propelled the emergence of the gender apparatus in order to socialize sexed individuals into the ideal productive and reproductive subjects of white, middle-class postwar America. The idea of gender was then directly appropriated from psychiatry by Anglo-American feminists during the struggle for women’s liberation, soon followed by demographers and economists concerned with the possible effects of declining fertility on Western populations. The book argues that this genealogy has critical relevance for feminist politics today, amid the deployment of gender equality as a neoliberal means of optimizing the fertility rates of ethnic Europeans and ensuring the region’s future economic growth. It shows how grasping the biopolitics of the idea of gender itself is integral to comprehending both the disappointments and challenges faced by feminist theory and politics today.

Keywords: gender, biopolitics, feminist politics, populations, psychiatry, women’s liberation, fertility rates, reproductive subjects

The point of the 2012 position statement was not to care for the health of child-patients, but to intervene against pro-science, pro-child activist attempts to remove forced circumcision from state health insurance coverage.
The AAP’s policy position on male circumcision was a political statement that inappropriately mixed medical considerations with religious and cultural ones in order to forward the political position that insurance companies should pay for a non-therapeutic religious rite. A new statement is needed that acknowledges the bodily rights of male children and explicitly rejects inappropriate religious influence on medical decision making.

Trying again to post this image:
According to Dr. Freedman, “the best analogy is that the AAP guidelines are a ‘permission
slip’ for those who want to circumcise their children so that society cannot say they are bad
parents or outlaw the practice.” In fact, in Freedman’s estimation, there is a sound argument
to be made that future guidance ought to fall more in line with a public safety position or
advisory on certification, rather than a medical recommendation (in line perhaps with other
AAP commentary on non-medical practices such as cheerleading, football, etc). “Maybe the
AAP should get out of the [circumcision] business,” he said, “since it’s not really a medical
practice. It’s only a ‘medical procedure’ in the sense that medical professionals are
performing it.”

2024 Brussels Collaboration on Bodily Integrity
"as a matter of justice, inclusivity, and gender equality in medical-ethical policy (we do not take a position as to criminal law), clinicians should not be permitted to perform any nonvoluntary genital cutting or surgery in prepubescent minors, irrespective of the latter's sex traits or gender assignment, unless urgently necessary to protect their physical health."

When we looked across our eight testimonials, we found that the principle of subsidiarity was the best way to address these problems. SUBSIDIARITY: The person best positioned to judge the desirability of any genital modification is the person whose genitals would be affected.

The lead bioethcist even went so far as to say that circumcision is "not a medical procedure", and that the AAP should "get out of the business" of doing forced penile circumcisions.
