One thing I’m hyped about is that Audacity has released a public beta with a swanky new UI! (I only use it for quick and dirty things like topping/tailing, reversing, and Paulstretching, but they’re adding automation and spectral editing tools, which sounds rad!) www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2026/06/auda...

Suddenly struck by my seeming biannual urge to engage with Bluesky again (I blame the somewhat lonely doldrums of summer, and ultimately the residual burnout from the school year (which is causing me to procrastinate all the writing I need to do))

As I’ve done for the past four years, I’m teaching David Huron’s work in my AI & Music course this week (we engage with his work frequently during the course), and I actually got unexpectedly emotional introducing it now that he has passed.

My syllabi are updated, my Canvas pages are made…this is the most ready I’ve ever been for a semester. After teaching in higher ed for 8yrs (4 on the adjunct circuit, 4 in tt jobs), this is the first semester where I haven’t had to deliver at least 1 completely new or heavily re-written course.

Because of the heft of my teaching duties (esp surrounding AI) and having to navigate two new tenure track jobs in the past four years, I haven’t actually written a ton of music in a hot second. I’ve vowed to change that this year.

Just finished my first book of the year: @karenhao.bsky.social’s Empire of AI. I can’t recommend this enough, regardless of whether you’re AI curious or a seasoned pro. As someone who has engaged with ML since about 2015, it was a fascinating and nuanced review of a decade of AI history.

That fallow time of year where I consider re-engaging with non-IG social media (primarily spurred on by having mustered enough motivation to sit down at my computer to work only to find that my external hard drive was improperly ejected last time and now needs time to right itself)

I was recently talking to another professor who said that their students started referring to Pierre Schaeffer’s “Étude aux chemins de fer” as “The Choo-Choo Piece” and it is basically my Roman Empire (also probably why I’m randomly giggling to myself at any given moment)

Reporting on MIT’s shameful ban via the Boston Globe:

Annnnd MIT’s administration just banned the class president from commencement for standing up for freedom and against state- and institution-sanctioned murder yesterday (especially hypocritical after Sally Kornbluth affirmed students’ right to free expression immediately after her speech).

I’ve watched every MIT commencement speech since my graduation’s in ‘11, and I can say that none have used the word ‘butthole’ twice nor stood up to power (or imparted as much wisdom) as @hankgreen.bsky.social’s. Thanks for speaking truth to power on a stage I care so much about! ❤️🩶🖤 #gotech

It is WILD to now be a matriarch in the academic electronic music community (I’m 35). By the end of tonight’s late SEAMUS concert (~11:40pm), I was the eldest femme person in the bar, one of 2-3 others amidst ~40 people. I would usually stay until I was the last, but I’ve been awake for over 20hrs 🫠

When I turned 35 in Jan, I reticently got one of those fancy retinol night creams because I figured I would be frowning & furrowing my brow a lot over next 4yrs and I might as well try to do *something* to counteract it. I assumed it was all a sham, but after 2mos, I’m astonished to say IT WORKS

Today in my AI and music class, we started digging into the nuts and bolts of neural networks, and I introduced hidden layers using the scene from Severance where Helly finds scary numbers for the first time (I also told them that the work of hidden layers is Mysterious and Important, just like MDR)

I almost always “Skip Intro” for the shows that I watch, but the Severance intro (for both seasons) is SO GOOD that I watch it every time. While clearly & intentionally CGI, there’s a photorealistic glossiness that’s uncannily reminiscent of AI-generated images (even in S1, before DallE et al)

I have a lot of reservations about the use of large language models (esp given the climate ethics), but I will say, I have some students in my AI & music class who have fantastic project ideas but no coding experience, and they have been able to accomplish some pretty incredible things so far

The DEI caused the plane crash narrative is a distraction. The tariffs are a distraction. Whatever insane nonsense Trump spews that the media will chase like cats chasing a laser light is a distraction. The only story that counts right now is the wholesale hijacking of control of the US government.

So I haven’t done the math and probably won’t ever have time to, but did this year’s GRAMMYs have the most female/nb awardees of all time? It honestly felt that way, but I don’t know if that’s just the fact that statistically, slightly increased representation feels like a landslide, or if it’s true

For the past three years, I’d used Spotify’s API to help demonstrate MIR to our students (as well as incite discussions about whether or not Spotify is evil - was really looking forward to it this year). However, I just discovered that in Nov, they shut down the audio features portion of their API.

10% of new tracks uploaded to Deezer are AI-generated music
Music service Deezer has spent the last year developing a tool to detect wholly-AI-generated music uploaded to its service. Its announcement on Friday came with a startling statistic. The company estimates that around 10% of new tracks on its platform have been “fully AI generated”. That’s around 10,000 tracks a day. “Most of the daily delivery of AI tracks are never streamed on Deezer, but they are however diluting the catalog and may be used for fraudulent activity,” added Deezer in its notes accompanying the announcement.
