Oldies but Goodies - French is Weird 07 - "Vegetables"

French is Weird (and confusing)- Fruits and Vegetables (Part two)
(Boulet smiling excited) Oh! You want some more expressions? You are so CABBAGE! - It means adorable. "être chou" = to be cabbage (picture of a kawaii cabbage surrounded by little hearts).
It could come from babies. In France a baby/toddler is a BOUT DE CHOU (literaly: a piece of cabbage). It sounds like an insult but it's not (someone is calling "Yo! Piece of cabbage" and a cabbage dad is answering "don't talk to me or my son ever again". (It really sounds like an insult in english, though.)
I heard it could be because an old saying goes "Les garçons naissent dans les choux et les filles naissent dans les roses" (boys are born in cabbages, girls are born in roses. Which sounds gynecologically unlikely)
But don't "take your cabbage" on this (yes, "Se prendre le chou" means "to get annoyed which"). If someone takes your cabbage...
You can "get in their cabbage" (rentrer dans le chou) which means "to violently attack" (a cabbage with a baseball bat is running toward Boulet's cabbage-shaped house screaming "I'll kill you", and Boulet is begging "nooo stay away from my chou!"
Or you can to compromise and not upset anyone by "ménager la chèvre et le chou" (to spare the goat and the cabbage) (Boulet is trying to separate a chou (with a base-ball bat) from a goat. The chou is saying "SHE started it!)

This is a LOT of cabbage: we also say FEUILLE DE CHOU to talk about a bad newspaper (cabbage leaf).
If you attempt to solve something EASY, you can say "Bête comme chou" (dumb as cabbage)
If you fail you can "make white cabbage" (faire chou blanc)
… And you will be in the cabbages ("être dans les choux"= to be wrong)
You can then say "C'est la fin des haricots" (it's the end of the green beans)= it's over (because you don't even have any more beans to eat)
In that kind of helpless situation you can also say "les carottes sont cuites" (carrots are cooked) this one is fun: it's an old expression meaning someone was about to die: the carrots are cooked with meat, so it was a funny way to say "Carrots are ready, we're waiting for dead meat" (old man sayin "smells good? Carrots?" and his son with a knife saying "oops! Abort! He's still moving!")
If you're screwed you "have it in the onion" (tu l'as dans l'oignon)= the onion being slang for butthole (onion saying "wait, what?".
You can tell someone to mind their onions (occupe-toi de tes oignons)="mind your own business (onion saying "well it sounds weird now")
If someone is "running on your green bean" (courir sur le haricot) it means they upset you.
A bean is a tattletale (fayot). Mostly in schools. It describes the teatcher's pet.
The teatcher's pet is also "chouchou" (cabbage-cabbage)
Cabbages are our cabbage-cabbages

GenAI has polluted image search results, especially for animal pics. It’s now basically impossible to find accurate art references. Enter this: a repository of open-access, AI-free images of wild & exotic taxa. Artists creating *without AI* have blanket permission for derivative/transformative use.

C’est pas parce que le sifflet est devenu une trompette fluo qu’il faut collectivement oublier ce qu’est un dogwhistle. On n’engage tout simplement pas d’échanges avec les gens qui veulent avoir ce débat, zéro oxygène.
