His real name is Abdulrahman! You don't need to invent a scary-sounding foreign name for him, his actual name works just fine for that purpose!

Still, Digger joins the ranks of "Babylon" and "Joker: Folie à Deux" as movies everyone mocks and hates, but I personally like a lot.

Admitedly, there are some problems with it. I don't really understand what Tom Cruise's character's deal is. And though a lot of the problems can be explained by The Twist™️, I get why audiences might be turned off by a filmaker going "it's bad on purpose, guys!"

I'm gonna be honest... I liked "Digger" quite a bit. One could even say I, ahem, dig it. The main reason it works for me is The Twist™️, that makes it more than just a trite satire about how "Trump/Oil Companies/Climate Change Bad," like I don't fucking know already.

Alright, I'm gonna check out what this "Digger" thing is y'all have been talking about.

"I is Another": a journalist tries to prove Himmler's personal masseur is lying about his supposed heroic deeds to save holocaust victims. Small and claustrophobic, the tension is well-maintained by the two leads, Claes Bang and Valerie Pachner. And...

One scene near the beginning that is especially weird: they interview a Taliban guy, and he blows up the interview when her head covering slips off - which she seems completely oblivious about. Like... do you not know what the Taliban's deal is?

"No Good Men": a news camerawoman tries to find love/professional advancement during the last months of American presence in Afghanistan. Has a weirdly jokey tone in the beginning, but improves as it goes on, and is quite moving by the end.

It's the last day of the Haifa Film Festival! Closing it out with a double feature: Afghan drama "No Good Men" and German drama/thriller "I is Another."

"Colony": a mad scientist releases a zombie virus in Yeon Sang-Ho's latest, that is clearly indebted to "Dawn of the Dead" and "The Last of Us," but retains his own kinetic style. Highly recommended!

"Roma Elastica": aging and dying Marion Cotillard arrives in Rome to shoot an arthouse scifi film that looks a lot like this one. Deeply indebted to Fellini, it throws a lot of stuff at the wall, and quite a but of it sticks. Still, some of its pretentions can be grating; not for beginners.

"Minotaur": Andrey Zvyagintsev's latest film mixes family drama and political thriller to highlight the moral decay in Russian society with the, uh, "Special Military Operation" as a backdrop. Compelling and gripping despite the length.

Day 8 of the Haifa Film Festival! Starting the day with Russian drama "Minotaur"; then later on, "Roma Elastica" starring Marion Cotillard; and finally, Korean zombie film "Colony" from the "Train to Busan" guy!

"Mishima: a Life in Four Chapters": Paul Schrader's examination of the life of a controversial Japanese author/political terrorist is visually stunning and has a Philip Glass score I mostly didn't hate(!), but I think it bites off more than it can chew.

You Wouldn'T Hit A Guy With Glasses, Would You? - Wreck It Ralph

"Unraveled": a former swimmer's life is upended when accusations about her husband and former coach start surfacing. The film has a very welcome narrative bait-and-switch, but it does take a while to get there, making a lot of the viewing deliberately uncomfortable.

Day 7 of the Haifa Film Festival starts with an earpy screening of Danish drama "Unraveled" and ends with a late screening of Paul Schrader's "Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters," from back when he was still a welcome presence in cinema.

"The Stranger": Francois Ozon does commendable work adapting Albert Camus's mostly introspective novel in visually arresting black and white. The film also adds a bit of commentary on life and bigotry in colonial-era Algeria, which I don't remember having much emphasis in the novel.

"3 Days in September": a woman that finds out her fiancee has been cheating on her on her wedding day goes on a single-take journey of self-discovery in this Romanian drama that combines an impressive technical feat with really strong acting, especially in the lead role.

Tamir Shimshoni @tshimshoni.bsky.social · 30/09/2026
"Our Loves": Avi Nesher recounting of the Oct. 7 attacks suffers from blunt, cliched writing and some innapropriately placed humor. The movie doesn't really do the event justice, and is arguably disrespectful. It certainly won't sway any anti-Israel sentiment abroad.

Day 6 of the Haifa Film Festival is a busy one! Starting with Israeli director Avi Nesher's Oct. 7 drama "Our Loves"; then Romanian relationship drama "3 Days in September"; and ending with Francois Ozon's filming of Albert Camus "The Stranger."

I wouldn't say it looks bad, it looks pretty interesting if you're into that. My problem is that I have lost all patience with comedies/satires about how everything is bad and the world is doomed. Kinda... don't think that's funny anymore. Never saw "Don't Look Up" for the same reason.

Day 5 of the Haifa Film Festival, saw Romanian family drama "A Safe Place." Unfortunately a bit of a dud; pretty tiresome and slow and takes forever to get anywhere. It also does the classic "let's have a character do something horrible out of nowhere so we know they're the bad one."

Ended with the much buzzed about Korean creature-feature "Hope." The characters were entertainingly dumb and there are plenty of fun, exciting moments. However, it's a bit too long and its open-ended nature might be a bit frustrating.

Started day 4 of the Haifa Film Festival with "Everytime," a German drama about dealing with grief that takes a turn for the surreal near the end. Starts out deliberately uncomfortable, but for the most part somewhat slow and dry.

"The Last Viking": DID patient Mads Mikkelsen and his ex-con brother look for buried loot in this Danish crime comedy that has a large cast of kooky characters, some bursts of graphic violence and genuine poginancy. Very highly reccomended!

"Adult Supervision": three dads accompany a field trip that goes increasingly wrong. Starts out cringingly funny, and become much more disturbing as it goes along. And where the hell are the teachers?! Please tell me schools in Sweden aren't this irresponsible.

The use of a picture of Tony Stark is interesting, considering he quite literally created an AI that almost killed all of humanity in the movies.

Second day of the Haifa Film Festival, got to see "L'Affaire Marie-Claire," a Charlotte Gainsbourg movie about a landmark case for abortion rights in France. Well made and quite amusing, but I don't need tge importance of abortion rights explained to me, I know already.

"The Furious": dear lord, what a thrill ride! Haven't seen action like this since "The Raid 2". Obviously tightly choreographed, but relentlessly brutal, like a mixture of kung fu, underground gladiators and pro wrestling. Plot is very simple and some dodgy CGI, buy who could possibly give a shit?

In a lot of orchestral scores it (used to be) fairly standard practice to have horn parts be written with no key signature. It's probably a holdover from when horns had interchagable crooks for different keys, so the horn was always in whatever key the piece is.

The way I remember the later seasons of Community, an episode by this point would just be: Abed (directly into camera): "I am the voice of series creator Dan Harmon, please stop watching this show, I hate it and you, the audience who enjoys it" (repeat as necessary).

Ha, reminds of the after-credits scene in "Vice" where the woman is like "have you seen the new fast & furious movie? I heard it's lit." I remember being like "I don't belive for a second this woman uses that word in real life."

This kind of discourse is always hilarious to me, because, as someone who makes contemporary classical music, anyone who uses major or minor triads is a basic and derivative hack as far as I'm concerned.

These sorts of movies rely on an ironic juxtaposition of something cheerful and innocent in a horror setting. Mr. Blobby is already the most frightening thing ever created by man, so making it into a horror movie seems superfluous.

I love how he says that this sort of thing will make ai music sound less generic, when these instructions are so basic they're functionally identical to some dipshit going "make it sound like Nile Rogers."

That last part is especially baffling because Will Smith, famously, was banished from the Oscars for a decade for that, so like... no, you demonstrably can't do that.
