ooo, following this as a trans geographer!! you might also like this excerpt from my dissertation.
Screenshot of text, reading: Ironically, trans geographies’ hesitancy to theorize trans space has resulted in a kind of definitional fixity. Trans space is a concept largely taken for granted to mean a space where transgender (and, occasionally, other types of gender diverse) people exist. However, interviewee Andy’s quote above brings up several questions about the nature of trans space. Is a trans space somewhere where only trans issues are discussed? Is a trans space merely where a group of trans people sometimes gather? Do trans spaces need to adhere to a specific set of political commitments to “count” under this category? (Or, put another way, how do we as scholars account for transmedicalist/truscum spaces, racist trans spaces, or transmisogynist trans spaces?)

My dissertation—0% of which was written by generative AI—has 173 em dashes, and you can pry each and every one of them out of my cold, dead hands.

Four panel comic featuring two blob-like people conversing.
Panel 1: two people face each other. Person on left (PL) has a neutral expression. Person on right (PR) looks angry and is pointing at PL, shouting, "STOP GIVING ME FUCKED UP BOOKS TO READ."
Panel 2: With continued neutral expression, PL says, "I understand completely, try this one," while holding a copy of the book Watership Down. PR asks, "What's it about?" while still looking angry.
Panel 3: Looking the same as in Panel 2, PL says, "Cute rabbits." PR now looks excited and is smiling while holding their head.
Panel 4: PL alone with heavy shadowing, now showing off a maleficent smile with wide eyes

Excellent thread. Also, I think some of y'all are gonna enjoy reading what comes out of my dissertation (sneak peek below) 👀
To date, most work on transmisogyny focuses on it as a system of oppression mainly carried out by cisgender people or institutions (like colonialism and the state). While there has been some critique of the romanticization of t4t as a broad community dynamic (e.g., Marvin 2022), of the failure of trans men to participate in feminism (Abelson 2016a), and of the presence of transnormativity generally in trans spaces (Davenport 2025), little work has yet addressed how transmisogyny specifically circulates inside of trans spaces. An example from my interviews is when Mel tried to find campus support as a transfeminine college student in a small college town in the Northeast. She quickly found that “the trans spaces were effectively boy’s clubs” with little tolerance for her presence. When Mel tried to bring up material issues that were common to transfeminine experiences, such as being denied housing and employment, she was silenced in the group.

done and cited 😂

Proofs submitted for my journal article on trans care politics!
Screenshot of proofs for article with journal Gender, Place & Culture. Title is "Uncomfortable trans care politics: normativity, institutional abandonment, and the obligation to care" by Theodore Davenport (University of Washington Department of Geography). Abstract reads: "This paper draws from work across care geographies and trans studies to complicate the romanticization of care as a one-size-fits-all solution to trans injustice. Drawing from two case studies from the New York City Trans Oral History Project, I use a framework of uncomfortable care politics to highlight how trans care practices are enmeshed with politics of gender normativity, trans survival, abandonment and exclusion by mainstream caring agents, and burnout. First, I evaluate one interviewee’s experiences with online trans websites and forums during the early 2000s. These websites and forums often focused on helping trans women pass as cisgender to circumvent transphobia. Exchanging passing advice constitutes an attempt to continue one’s world, but it also has the potential to reinscribe transnormativity. Rather than demonizing passing advice, however, uncomfortable care ethics helps us understand passing as a survival strategy while allowing space to consider its political ramifications. Second, I consider the case of the Transy House, a house owned by a trans couple in Brooklyn during the 1990s and 2000s that came to serve as an informal shelter for trans people in NYC. The owners of Transy House expressed an obligation to care for their found community despite their burnout, given a lack of housing support from mainstream caring agents, such as family and the state. Transy House highlights a trans-community-centered care ethic while simultaneously revealing how trans people are often abandoned by traditional caring agents in housing."
