I mean, this type of structure (for trams) isn't much more than that, basically walls and a roof. Here's an example from near where I lived in Lyon:
a tram garage. There's a few tracks with some trams on it, in a simple structure made of steel roofing, and mesh and glass wall panels.

Seattleites, what're you doing Thursday? That's right, going for a hike (and transit trip audit) for #WeekWithoutDriving!

on a scale of "definitely not" to "absurd to even ponder", how reasonable would it be to take out every other floor, make them double-height?

Still in absolute awe of @mysfpuc.bsky.social's Fifield-Cahill Ridge Trail that I hiked on Saturday with a group for Transit Month. What a way to round out the month! The trail requires a docent to protect the rare habitats, which are probably some of the most beautiful I've seen on the peninsula.

they're built in California, and tested in the northeast since that's where Amtrak owns long stretches of tracks to be able to schedule the needed mileage!

it's really no different from Caltrain! pre-electrification they ran 16 trains each way a day on weekends, that took 1h40min from SF to SJ. On weekdays today, Capitol Corridor runs 15 trains a day that take 1h43min from Emeryville to Sacramento!

Check your account, I have 3500ish points just bumping around doing nothing. It'd be enough for a coach seat to visit my folks in Portland, just from looking at the booking flow.

having a ticket in hand is functionally no different from tapping on to the train as you board. neither guarantee you a seat, they both are just mechanisms to pay a fare. (the ticket isn't even actually tied to the train it has printed on it - you can use it for any train in the next year!)

AC Transit predictions are consistently just far worse than other agencies. Most agencies actually mean now when their data says now, AC Transit is consistently 1-2min early on theirs (until a 10min late bus suddenly makes up several minutes and you miss it)

I think Google uses the individual agency feeds here, though, and so we wind up with it not having the transfer data anyways. But at least up here it's not a simple lack of the data existing 🫠

so for creating the interagency savings calculator tool that shows off pre-Clipper 2 fares (with existing transfers) vs Clipper 2 fares (with new transfer program), literally all I had to do was mechanistically apply fare rules to get the discounted fare: clipper2.hikingbytransit.com#adult#AC#BA;...

Yeah, it's absolutely crazy. I'm shocked they got permission for it, though I'm not familiar with who they'd have to ask permission from? Surely at least it'd require an EIR to demolish acres of estuary-adjacent grassland?

My problem is the great hall is so empty. It's designed to have giant holes in the floor leading to the lower levels and to have ...any people at all in wandering around it. It's sad and barren.

I'll admit my description of the route over was a little dramatized 😅 it's a lovely area and I'm excited for the Bay Trail project to make the ride out to the end of the marina nicer.

tschuy 🏳️‍🌈 @tsch.uy · 19/09/2026
The problem is the biking distance is, from the nearest spot to the Aquatic Park bike bridge, identical to the distance to BART! It'll be a fun alternative to the train, but it's fundamentally pretty bad transit, given poor access, the high upfront costs to reno the dock, AND high running costs
110
tschuy 🏳️‍🌈 @tsch.uy · 19/09/2026
Well, I say this but actually, I think making it part of the federal NTD reqs would be most ideal. My understanding is that a lot of the prefixing I advocate for in the above piece would require modifying existing GTFS software, but implementing us:[state]:[operator]:[route_id] would be fantastic
030
tschuy 🏳️‍🌈 @tsch.uy · 19/09/2026
if this is Cal FTB, I would not expect anything to be easy with them, and would simultaneously not prepare to be surprised.

tschuy 🏳️‍🌈 @tsch.uy · 19/09/2026
also for comparison: BART from North Berkeley is a 26min trip to Embarcadero, 1min longer than the ferry and 1min longer on bike from the apartments at the foot of the Aquatic Park bike bridge.
010
tschuy 🏳️‍🌈 @tsch.uy · 19/09/2026
Like, a ferry is fun, and I think we should invest in civic infrastructure that brings joy to our lives, but a Berkeley ferry is very much not about (or at least not going to be) providing useful transportation.
230
tschuy 🏳️‍🌈 @tsch.uy · 19/09/2026
This is great, but the ferry is going to be 25min from the pier to the ferry building vs the AC Transit FS at 21min from 6th & University to the transit center.
220
tschuy 🏳️‍🌈 @tsch.uy · 19/09/2026
to get from the ferry pier to the nearest residential building, you must: * walk 1mi down a wide, empty road * at the bridge, divert to the gravel parking lot and aim for the bike/ped bridge * follow the bridge over a freeway south, east, and north * cross the railroad tracks * 1.2mi total, 26min!

tschuy 🏳️‍🌈 @tsch.uy · 19/09/2026
Making it a statewide Cal-ITP thing is absolutely the right call. I just wish the other data fields had also been deduped while we were at it (using an agency prefixing system like I describe in the article)
120
tschuy 🏳️‍🌈 @tsch.uy · 19/09/2026
The Bay Area already does a lot of this work through the unified MTC feed. Doing it requires some sort of decision making structure and set scale (don't want to dedupe LA County only to decide that OC should be in the scheme too)
130
tschuy 🏳️‍🌈 @tsch.uy · 19/09/2026
I'd definitely be interested in whatever preliminary stats you get from putting that together, I don't really have an intuition for what the scale of the problem of overlapping IDs is
100
tschuy 🏳️‍🌈 @tsch.uy · 19/09/2026
(Still disappointed that the law that will require every small agency to touch their GTFS files to disambiguate stop_ids doesn't do the same for route_ids/trip_ids/etc)
100
tschuy 🏳️‍🌈 @tsch.uy · 19/09/2026
Well, starting in 2028 it *should* be the stop_id :) Will be interesting to see how long it takes to actually stabilize and have agencies generally properly use the registry id.
110
tschuy 🏳️‍🌈 @tsch.uy · 19/09/2026
old stop IDs -> new ones? I don't know what geographic area you work on but it's my understanding that MTC mandates a prefixing system that prevents collisions, and I'd wager a guess the Bay will be first to the registry vs SoCal and thus keep their stop IDs

tschuy 🏳️‍🌈 @tsch.uy · 19/09/2026
Just heard that AB 1599 was signed into law! Once fully implemented, one physical stop on the ground will have one name and one ID in apps (and other datasets)! Data standardization is a *major* part of transit integration. This is wonky but so important! www.seamlessbayarea.org/blog/2026/6/...

the 90s were a bright spot where a renewed focus on reliability, combined with a new and highly competent manager and a BART strike, led to something of a renaissance for the agency. Very much lessons for today.
071
tschuy 🏳️‍🌈 @tsch.uy · 17/09/2026
the reality is that, since BART took the role of the main, high-profile transit agency in the East Bay, AC Transit has had to be very careful and very strategic about maintaining operations and financing, and it's a problem that they've struggled with continuously.
