Slow Saturday morning listening: John Abercrombie and Ralph Towner “Sargasso Sea” (ECM/Polydor), 1976. Two of my favorite jazz guitarists in one place. One of two U.S. copies I own of this (the other is a Warner Bros. pressing). Placid. #jazzsky

Just finished: Dino Buzzati “The Bewitched Bourgeois” (NYRB). 50 stories from the Italian author of “The Singularity” and “The Stronghold.” Great slipstream-y speculative fiction. RIYL Borges and Calvino. #Booksky

Vinyl reckoning: Dome “3” (Editions Mego), 1981/2011. Reissue of the austere-but-funky third album from Bruce Gilbert and Graham Lewis’ post-Wire duo. Reminds me more of Throbbing Gristle and This Heat than anything Wire did.

Vinyl reckoning: Hedvig Mollestad & Trondheim Jazz Orchestra “Maternity Beat” (Rune Grammofon), 2022. Just catching up on this one, which is quite different than her other records. The combo of guitar and violin—not to mention vocals and orchestra—reminds me of Mahavishnu’s “Apocalypse.” #JazzSky

Vinyl reckoning: June of 44 “Engine Takes to the Water” (Quarterstick), 1995. Saw these gents at Black Cat when this was released. Not quite as good as the time I saw Rodan, but that’s a mighty high bar. #NowPlaying

Vinyl reckoning: Wire “154” (WB), 1979. I first heard Wire in 1987. At the time, it seemed to me that “154” must’ve come out 100 years ago. So much had happened, culturally, in those 8 years. “Two People in a Room” might be my favorite Wire song. Unrelentingly modern. #NowPlaying

Just finished: Alisdair Gray’s “Lanark” (Canongate), 1981. This cult Scottish novel was a heavy, but ultimately worthwhile, lift. Reminded me of Delany’s “Dhalgren” and Iain Banks’ “The Bridge.” But, really, nothing is like its shaggy dog sprawl. #Booksky

#Nowplaying : Tommy Flanagan - “Thelonica” (Enja, Japan), 1983. I saw Flanagan, famous for playing on Coltrane’s “Giant Steps,” solo in, I think, 1993. This is a Monk-themed trio record with George Mraz on bass and Art Taylor on drums. An elegant interpretation from an unsung master. #Jazzsky

Just finished: Michel Faber “Under the Skin” (2000). Almost as mesmerizing as Fowles’ “The Magus,” its allegorical qualities are reminiscent of LeGuin. The Scottish setting evoked a bit of Banks’ “The Bridge.” Ultimately I would say this is a book about meat. #Booksky

Just finished: Julien Gracq’s “The Castle of Argol” (Lapis Press), 1938/1991. I really enjoyed the slipstream qualities of Gracq’s fifties novels “The Opposing Shore” and “Balcony in the Forest.” “Castle,” by contrast, is very goth and surrealist—a mere hint of the French novelist’s future. #Booksky
